When I get back I have to try to unsnarl an issue with user identification and access to client data where the user login is mediated by a separate app (SSO as part of a whole other project that is going on). The current requirements call for a verified identity from the admin user at account creation which puts the requirement for ID validation outside of the app my team is trying to implement. However, it has been pointed out (quite legitimately) that doing that puts up a barrier to account creation.

I’m of the opinion that we could track ID verified users downstream in the user profile in our app instead, which not only lets them get in the door nice and easy but also gives us future options about just how aggro we want to be with having an actual identifiable human associated with an account.

However, doing the legwork to validate my opinion is going to be a huge PITA. Also the vendor is onboarding next month so in addition to this nice little mess I get to revalidate pretty much all requirements against the actual capabilities of the chosen platform. Including the idea I have that we could incorporate an admin user ID verification step into profile creation. Le sigh. At least I have a minion to help.

And I don’t know maybe the project director will swoop down accompanied by a beam of heavenly light and angelic choir to tell us we don’t need ID validation at all…

I guess going back to work is a bit of a mixed bag.

Doing stuff I’m almost sure is a waste of time and money. My grandfather who passed away in 19****89, had multiple bank accounts including multiple ones for hs grandchildren. Turns out when his estate got settled the executor missed some. Literally decades later, I discover the one in my name in an unclaimed funds list.

The proof required for the claim is proof of shared address with the account on record. Aka my Grandpop’s PO box. Which obviously I don’t have what with having been a child who didn’t get mail and who lived at a different address. Also the executor of the estate passed away in 2012. And, I live in NZ but this is State of NY bureaucracy.

So I’m like 99% sure I’m throwing away a notary fee and postage on a chance at a completely unknown amount of money (but probably not all that much).

If anyone has any windmills, I’d be happy to charge them with a lance.

We think of WWIII as when the nukes launch, but I think it’s kinda been ongoing only a lot quieter and more dirty. Mostly on economic and political fronts, stuff like destroying the UK economically and isolating them from the EU by convincing them brexit is a good idea. But also literally millions of people have died in the last 50 years in not labeled as war military actions like the US in Afghanistan.

I think they want rail between suburbs and cities. Definitely if there was rail direct from Porirua to Lower Hutt a huge amount of people who live in one place would suddenly be willing to work in the other, or vice versa.

Yeah worry less about being platonic ideal of fair and more about actual harm - there's always a slippery slope argument to be made but when the hypothetical is given more weight than the actual stupid things happen.
