SheeEttin,

So like… anything you’re not cooking from scratch yourself. And even a lot of things you are, like any baked good would qualify as ultra-processed due to sweeteners and emulsifiers (e.g. egg).

SheeEttin,

Realism is pessimism.

SheeEttin,

Jets do not. They usually use Jet A, basically kerosene. It’s piston engines that use leaded gasoline (avgas).

SheeEttin,

You’re not missing anything. A wheelchair slides down the chute, hits the bottom, flips over the bottom, and lands on the ground just after the chute. Then the guy picks it up and puts it on the cart.

SheeEttin,

Indian numbering is complicated. 10 lakh of something is one million of that thing. 1m INR is about 12k USD.

Black Friday shoppers spent a record $9.8 billion in U.S. online sales, up 7.5% from last year (www.cnbc.com)

Black Friday e-commerce spending popped 7.5% from a year earlier, reaching a record $9.8 billion in the U.S., according to an Adobe Analytics report, a further indication that price-conscious consumers want to spend on the best deals and are hunting for those deals online....

SheeEttin,

Since last year? USD inflation has been 5.1%, so assuming the 7.5% spending increase to $9.8b doesn’t account for inflation, the flat number for 2022 was $9.1b, and adding on an inflation adjustment would mean 2022 spending in 2023 dollars was $9.6b, meaning a 2.1% comparative increase in 2023 dollars. But they don’t link to the study, so I can’t say whether they already accounted for inflation or not.

Ultimately the record $9.8b number may or may not account for inflation, but either way, if it doesn’t, I’m sure that it’s near the peak.

SheeEttin,

It talks about that in the article.

Manosphere grifters misuse evolutionary psychology to promote anti-feminist views (boingboing.net)

New research in the journal Evolutionary Human Sciences, from University of Kent researchers Louis Bachaud and Sarah Johns, explores how members of various manosphere communities (think Andrew Tate and his ilk) misuse research and concepts from evolutionary psychology to bolster their own misogynistic views.

SheeEttin,

I don’t know if OP mangled it or CNN updated it, but the headline on the site currently has an additional “her”.

The link preview here on lemmy is generated shortly after submission, I think, and not updated later on, so I think OP managed to omit it somehow.

SheeEttin,

Borne solicited someone he believed was underage for sex and encouraged them to make child sex abuse material

So he got stung by a cop pretending to be a kid. Eh. I’m fine with not having tax dollars pay for his room and board if there wasn’t any actual harm committed. The guy knows he’s going to be under a microscope for the rest of his life, so I doubt he’ll ever try this again.

SheeEttin,

Wow, never thought I’d see someone literally say “fuck you, got mine”.

SheeEttin,

People with children in strollers. Other than that, I’ve never seen it either.

SheeEttin,

No, or at least not that I remember. I’ve seen plenty of people running with their dogs, but the dogs are on foot too.

SheeEttin,

Using any handgun, or probably most rifles, against a bear is just going to make it angry. Those fuckers are tanks. Use bear spray for bears.

SheeEttin,

That’s the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution.

SheeEttin,

It’s more cost-effective to just not have them derail in the first place.

Of course, that requires railway maintenance. But if you can skip that and let the government pick up the bill for the inevitable disaster, that’s even better!

Alabama priest who fled to Italy with teen he later married is expected to be defrocked (www.nbcnews.com)

State records show that a suspended Alabama priest recently married the 18-year-old woman he fled to Italy with this summer, and an archbishop said Wednesday that he expects the Vatican to pursue the man’s official dismissal from the priesthood....

SheeEttin,

Legal for us, not legal for priests by church law.

SheeEttin,

Sketchy as hell, yes, but if there’s no evidence of wrongdoing the law can’t, and shouldn’t, take action against him.

South Korea court orders Japan to compensate 'comfort women', reverses earlier ruling (www.reuters.com)

SEOUL, Nov 23 (Reuters) - A South Korean appellate court on Thursday ordered Japan to compensate a group of 16 women who were forced to work in Japanese wartime brothels, overturning a lower court ruling that dismissed the case and prompting a stern protest from Tokyo.

SheeEttin,

How about both: “‘comfort women’ sex slaves”?

SheeEttin,

I’ve never heard someone say the government is corrupt and infrastructure should be in the hands of the people. The government is the people. Most people say it should be taken out of the hands of private companies and put into the hands of the people, managed by the government. Workers controlling the means of production and all that.

SheeEttin,

See, I’m working on the assumption that the government is controlled by the people, not corporations. Otherwise you don’t really have a government.

To throw out another catchphrase, governments only exist by the consent of the governed, and that does ultimately mean the people.

SheeEttin,

I don’t really like any of them, but I think F1953 is probably the best among them. The ones with the stars in the center look like health insurance corporate logos. F1953 actually looks like a state flag, though it almost looks like a country flag (Bahamas, Jordan, etc.).

SheeEttin,

I don’t see anyone refusing to take the site down. They contacted the hosting company, and a few days later the hosting company took it down. If this is the quality of journalism they’re trying to protect, I don’t think any value was lost.
