I am really glad Flatpak exists, it made using Linux much easier for me ^^

Does SponsorBlock work with Invidious and LibRedirect in general?

Death of a Game is a great series, I was introduced to it by nerdSlayer’s video on Motor City Online (my beloved hyperfixation), and this one is just as good.

How’s FreeSO like? I’ve been somewhat interested in trying it out due to liking the idea of a multiplayer Sims game as well as the game’s old-timey graphics, but I’m not really sure how hard it is to get into it, or if it’s grindy to get enough resources to make a nice home and stuff like that.

Besides speed, it’s also really useful for older games with unstable graphics renderers that don’t play nice with modern hardware. When I was still on Windows, I used DXVK on Fallout: New Vegas and Driver: Parallel Lines, and they decreased crashes by a LOT compared to when they ran on native DX9.

In terms of speed, obviously I didn’t notice much of a difference with D:PL since it’s a 2006 game that’s not demanding at all, but I did notice F:NV seemed to also run better and less laggy in general (not only is FNV poorly-optimized, but I also use a lot of graphics mods for it).

21°C/70°F is a normal winter temperature where I’m from in the southern hemisphere 🥲

And right now it’s summer… let’s put it this way, lately it’s been over 40°C/104°F for so many weeks in a row that, when temperatures dipped to 33°C/91°F, it felt cold… and to think it’s only going to get worse going forward @_

Honestly, most of the people in places like that are people who already found their way out, and now just want to shoot the shit with other people who understand what they’ve been through.

At least in my experience, that wasn’t the case at all. I used to hang out in communities like that back in the late 2010s, and me as well as multiple folks were people who still hadn’t managed to shake off their abusive narcissistic parents due to us being young teenagers or unable to get a job, and needed an emotional support group. While yes, there were also multiple people who already had shaken off their N-parents, they certainly weren’t the only group and there were still many who either were still stuck living with them, or people who were living on their own but were still dependent on their parents in some way or otherwise forced to see them once in a while. And a nice chunk of the people who did manage to go low- or no-contact with their abusive parents still gave the emotional support for those of us who didn’t have the means to do so.

Telling someone to seek professional help instead feels like such a slap in the face for people in such a situation because, for the most part, they literally can’t - at best, it’s simply because they’re completely financially dependent on their parents and can’t afford a therapist (and it might be resolvable if they get enough donations to afford checkups and their parents are the neglectful variety and don’t really care about that), but at worst (and it’s almost always at worst) they’re control freaks who believe therapy is a scam and you wanting to do it instead of “praying the depression away” means you’re not religious enough, or they would see it as an affront due to the implication of their child being traumatized by them and get furious and punish them, or be insulted/freaked out by them receiving money from strangers online and cut their entire access to the internet altogether. It’s simply not an option. So having an online emotional support group they don’t need to cough up money for is simply the next best bet for many, and while it won’t solve the problem, it’ll at least make it manageable. I know it did for me.

Ohh, I see. Thank you for clarifying, Math has always been the bane of my existence. x_x

For everyday tasks, I think a Fedora distrobox works fine, but you would have to upgrade it eventually and I admit I’m not sure how you do that under distrobox. Still, I initially used it and still have a Fedora distrobox I use for doing stuff for my job, as well as one I use for running a game modding program that requires Java, and they both work fine.

I’ve also had success with a Debian distrobox, which I used to compile Render96ex. Debian is pretty universal, so it’s much easier to follow compile instructions using it than a Fedora distrobox ^^’

Me struggling with Realtek on Linux 🤝 One of my partners struggling with Nvidia on Linux

At least I managed to get a Linux-compatbile wifi USB later on, but it was pricey to import it and it’s still quite slow :/

SimplyTadpole,
@SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Does Intel sell wifi cards that use USB rather than PCI slots? My motherboard doesn’t have the slot for a wifi PCIe card, and I’ve only seen Intel sell those :/

SimplyTadpole,
@SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I can absolutely confirm it’s still valid for Realtek. I had one using the RTL8812AU chipset that basically no kernel version nor distro provided out of the box, so I constantly had to download a third-party driver from Github and manually patch it via dkms, or use a third-party repository containing the driver package… and then the driver broke so badly that it wouldn’t let me update at all unless I uninstalled it, which left me without the internet I needed to actually update, effectively leaving me unable to update until I could buy another one from Mediatek that’s compatible.

And said Mediatek wifi is really slow, so I just went from the frying pan into the fire…

SimplyTadpole,
@SimplyTadpole@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ahh I see, thanks for clarifying. It seems that where I live mostly only has the older Realtek chips for sale, so I likely mostly had bad luck.

I tried USB tethering, but it wouldn’t work for some reason… I don’t remember exactly what happened, but I think either the phone or my computer couldn’t detect each other.

I see, that is a shame…

Do I really need to make an account there in order to download it? :/

Hi, I am one of the two people

It honestly gets better after Stage 3, most of the downright awful stuff is confined to Stage 1 (and 2 to a lesser extent).
