The tweet is from January. The trial only started today, so I’d argue it’s topical. But there’s no limit on the age of posts in this community. As the community grows, or someone other than me submits a post we’ll revisit that rule. As I’m doing all the legwork for this community and two others, I’m disinclined to make things harder for myself right now tbh - plus I don’t use Twitter or Facebook so I’m just stealing posts I like from Reddit to get things going. If anyone wants to do the same, the dystopia app for sight impaired users is free and has no ads. Just don’t vote or comment and Reddit won’t benefit from your views.

I’ll be making a stickied post in the coming days asking for additional moderators and for feedback on the rules. I’d encourage everyone to have their say then - I would like this community to be a group effort, rather than me just making the rules as I go. Meanwhile, please feel free to post your own content and help make this community more diverse (and interesting!)

EDIT: I’m getting myself confused. I’ve already made a stickied post requesting additional moderators and inviting people to discuss the rules and/or the way this community is being run.

That’s the place to bring up your concerns. I’d prefer to keep the post comments relevant to the post and as conflict free as possible. Please post in the stickied thread, or create your own discussion thread.

SomeoneElse,

I’m pretty left wing myself, and British, so I feel reasonably sure I’m not pushing any right wing agenda. Discussion of the topics posted is completely fine as long as everyone follows the community, instance and site-wide rules. It’s perfectly acceptable for people to have different opinions from me or you, as long as they are respectful in discussing them.

They’re not memes, they’re screenshots. Have you heard of content aggregators? It’s a pretty standard thing - and it probably accounts for at least 50% of what you see online.

2.5k subscribers suggest people they’re enjoying this community and content. There was remarkably little content on lemmy a month ago that wasn’t tech related or actual memes. If we want lemmy to succeed we need light hearted communities as well as the serious stuff. I want lemmy to succeed, I don’t want to go back to Reddit, so I’m doing my part. Why are you here if you don’t like the content? Why don’t you post your own content if you like the community but not the content? Why don’t you volunteer to mod if you don’t like the way I’m running this community?

As to your questions;

  1. I feel confident that a squad leader of specialist army division will have had a weapons safety lesson or two in their time. This meets the posting guidelines I wrote, imo.
  2. I don’t know what a chud is. But assuming it’s something bad, I think it’s important to talk about contentious issues as long as everyone follows the rules. Avoiding topics completely just because chuds (?) also talk about the topic is silly. Bigots, rule/aggressive people, and people arguing in bad faith are not tolerated here. Report rule breaking comments and they will be deleted. Violators of the rules get one warning before being banned.
  3. This community didn’t exist a month ago. The shooting was not discussed here. This community is primarily for entertainment purposes - although discussion is perfectly acceptable, even encouraged. It is possible to discuss something without getting too serious about it.

You aren’t everyone. You aren’t the discussion police. If you’d like to dictate what people can or can’t post and talk about, create your own community.

  1. Once again, not a meme. Content aggregation. I’d prefer it if you didn’t liken me to Elon musk or call my efforts bullshit. As a reminder; insults and name calling is not allowed. That’s not my rule, it’s lemmys.

Thank you for your input.

SomeoneElse,

Army dude gave his take on the topic. Random person replied questioning his qualifications to talk about the subject. Army dude explained why he was qualified; he has indeed taken a weapon safety class, he’s led an entire squadron in armed combat. That’s the “don’t you know who I am”.

SomeoneElse,

I’m so confused why this was necessary. Why not just have a straight railing across? You could use the space for decorative purposes - it can be easily accessed and cleaned from the stairs. This is just bizarre.

SomeoneElse,

I can’t read the article from the uk. Here’s a photo of her hair at the time for anyone interested. https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/f4ee107a-baa2-4ce6-acd5-6ee6d01540d5.jpeg

SomeoneElse,

I started a community !downtherabbithole for this kinda thing but written content isn’t as easy to find as videos unfortunately. I’m like you and much prefer reading to watching. There’s at least one text link there that’s an interesting read. I think there’s a long-form community on lemmy too, that might scratch an itch?

SomeoneElse, (edited )

Do you mean if you put something in squared brackets in your username? Cos I’m using bean and it’s not showing a flair for your comment.

SomeoneElse,

I want to know too. Can someone EILI5 for me? If I let this thing scan my eye, what’s the worst that could happen? And how is it worse than all the rest of my info that is out there?

SomeoneElse,

You have to have an instagram account in order to have a threads account - it’s how you log in. I think whatever your Instagram handle is becomes your threads handle, or it’s saved for you.

I wanted to see what it was like so I created a new Instagram account (not linked to any of my real personal info) and then a new threads account. I had a look for a couple of days and decided it was dogshit so I deleted both. I suspect an awful lot of people did exactly that.

SomeoneElse,

It’s like they used crazy paving on that fireplace!

SomeoneElse,

I mean, we fucked up the world for centuries so it’s gotta be pretty high. Would you blame Native Americans and indigenous Canadians losing their language on the English or the Americans/Canadians out of interest? We certainly got the ball rolling, but the new North Americans saw it through.

SomeoneElse,

It’s called Welsh rarebit and it’s plenty common in England too!

SomeoneElse,

Yes… that’s why I said we started it. But you’ve had a good 250 years to make a run of it on your own. It was an idle question, no need for any agro.

Edit: spelling

SomeoneElse,

“I’ve just seen Dave being kicked out by his missus” works. Maybe it’s regional because [I’ve] just seen the news/the results/the answers/Kelly all sound fine to my ear. But I am a bit of a cockney.

SomeoneElse,

I don’t think the Aussies would agree with that! But I see what you’re saying, the English speakers were at fault, whether you considered them British or new world north American.

SomeoneElse,

@angrilyeatingmuffins I’ve replied to you elsewhere reminding you not to get aggressive, now you’re being xenophobic too. I’m deleting your comments. Please don’t break the rules of the community again or you’ll be banned. Thank you.

SomeoneElse,

I’m really glad she didn’t somehow double down or get arsey about it!

SomeoneElse,

It’s a real shame that’s (yet another) community that has been created by someone with no intention of posting anything. That was one of my favourites and I’m tempted to create an active community… but I’m already the mod of 3 decent sized communities and 3 tiny ones. Lemmy really really needs content posters to thrive - even if they’re just stealing content from Reddit like I am!

SomeoneElse,

It’s structural - this is in the eaves of a loft conversion.

SomeoneElse,

I messaged the commenter above twice to get to the bottom of this but they never responded. I have to assume it’s the post itself, and if that’s the case, I disagree that this is transphobic. I’m the poster and the only mod of this community (although I’ve repeatedly asked for more mods and opened a sticky post to debate any issues that arise, I’ve had no takers) so ultimately I have to make the decision - unless content is against lemmy’s rules, which this is not. It’s a tricky position to be in tbh. My thinking is that while it may not be what we want to hear, while it might not fit seamlessly with the assertion that trans women are women (which I agree with wholeheartedly), there is no insult, no hatred here.

Ross tucker is a legitimate sport scientist and can’t find any controversy about him online. The issue of AMAB athletes (particularly those who went through puberty) competing as women in professional sport is a dicey subject. Even before trans people were better represented in professional sport AFAB athletes were sometimes prevented from competing because their testosterone levels were naturally high, while athletes with genetic abnormalities like Phelps get to compete, despite them having a clear advantage. The whole thing is a mess.

All Ross Tucker is saying is that there hasn’t been remotely enough research yet to come to a scientific consensus, and even with that consensus it will take a monumental shift in the attitudes of athletes, sporting bodies and fans before we come to a widely agreed upon and scientifically sound set of rules for trans athletes. That’s objectively correct.

Banning any discussion at all around this issue, just in case it’s perceived as transphobic is censorship, and that doesn’t help anyone. We shouldn’t shy away from important conversations, as long as people remain civil and do not insult others. To my mind Ross Tucker’s tweet is civil and doesn’t insult anyone, and the vast majority of replies to this post follow suit. Any that haven’t followed the rules have been deleted and the posters have received a first and final warning that they will be banned if they make bigoted comments here again.

I’m very open to discussing whether we should continue to allow posts such as these, but I’d rather it be in a place with more visibility and more people contributing. This community has 2.5k subscribers and this post received just one comment suggesting it was transphobic. I’m more than happy to amend the rules of the community but I think we need at least 0.5% of subscribers to weigh in before I do that. Please feel free to start the conversation in the stickied post, or create your own discussion thread. I appreciate your input 💚

SomeoneElse,

Thank you! Someone’s currently chewing me out for being a right wing gun nut (I’m British and pretty left wing) who’s no better than Elon musk because I don’t post OC (?) and accusing me of breaking my own rules, so it’s really nice to have a positive interaction! I’m under no allusion that I have all the answers, or that I won’t make mistakes but I’m just one person and I’m trying my best. Thank you for being nice!
