SomeoneElse,

Omg I love it!! The wooden ceiling panel in the living room(?) is gorgeous. GA is Georgia though, right? In the south? I would have thought aircon is must there, but then I’m in the UK and only need to use a fan a handful of times a year. Are electric ceiling fans like that enough to keep the house cool?

SomeoneElse,

Sorry, I’m entering stupid questions territory here, but a bonus how? Are they cheaper than aircon? More efficient? Or does it get hot enough that aircon alone isn’t enough keep you cool? I don’t think I’ve ever seen an electric ceiling fan irl and I only experience air conditioning in shops.

SomeoneElse,

It’s exactly the same… I just cut off identifying info in line with lemmy’s rules.

SomeoneElse,

I see your point. But the title was taken from the top line of the screenshot. The fact that the reply got 400 more likes than the original doesn’t add anything to the murder… if anything the reply only getting 400 more likes detracts from it. But, I’ll update the post to include that info and delete the post from the user above you as it’s breaks the rules.

SomeoneElse,

I’ve removed your comment for breaking rule 1: be civil; no name calling or insults, and no swearing to insult someone. Putting “kindly” before “fuck off” doesn’t negate the insult. You also broke rule 2: discussion is ok, arguments are not. Don’t be aggressive and don’t argue for arguments sake. The person you replied to wasn’t being aggressive, calling their opinion a “dipshit take” is unwarranted. Please read the rules in the sidebar before you participate in this community again. If you break the rules again, you will be banned. Thank you.

SomeoneElse,

I’ve removed your comment for breaking rule 1: no name calling or insults. This applies even when someone has a very unpopular opinion. Please read the rules in the sidebar before participating in this community again. If you break the rules again you will be banned. Thank you.

SomeoneElse,

This was nothing. I’ve had more abuse in the two months I’ve been a mod than I have in my entire life! But thank you for the support, I appreciate it!

SomeoneElse,

Without mods the trolls, bigots, and people just looking to argue and stir up shit completely ruin the community for the users looking to socialise/discuss etc. That nearly happened on this post with one user being so insulting, aggressive and argumentative I had to ban them. They made about 10 comments that broke the rules in under an hour and were borderline inciting violence against poor people. No one wants to socialise in an environment like that.

Also by creating a community here, I’m bound by feddit.uk’s rules and Lemmy’s code of conduct. If I don’t moderate, this whole community will be banned. I enjoyed the Reddit sub, I want to enjoy the community here too. If the only way I can do that is to enforce pretty basic rules, then so be it. I just wish people would stop calling me a power hungry narcissist plus a whole dictionary full of insults when I don’t deserve them.

SomeoneElse,

That caught my eye too, but I think it might be a reflection of how law enforcement speaks “a female suspect” “a male detainee” etc.

SomeoneElse,

I wasn’t a mod on Reddit so I can only speculate, but I imagine that came from the admins not the moderators. It’s probably buried in the ToCs somewhere that your messages are monitored 😠FWIW, mods on lemmy/kbin definitely can’t see your private messages. Whether kbin can monitor your messages probably comes down to your instance owner/admin. I’d very much like to think that doesn’t happen but it might be worth looking into.

SomeoneElse,

My car was stolen last week. 48 hours later my partner tracked it down and went to get it. The police hadn’t even requested the carpark CCTV in that time. We had to call the police to actually enter the place it was at so we didn’t get arrested for breaking and entering ourselves. The police will count this as their win, their solve even though they did practically nothing. They didn’t even arrest the guy who had our car. As useful as a chocolate teapot.

SomeoneElse,

Depending on its orientation, it’s probably pretty dark inside too.

SomeoneElse,

Car park for the buildings next to it?

SomeoneElse,

Sorry, most of these are ancient. You could try reverse image search but I don’t suspect you won’t find much more info.

SomeoneElse,

I think the house being there first is the more likely scenario. I like your optimism though!

SomeoneElse,

Nice detective skills!

SomeoneElse,

It’s not the house itself that makes me sad - it’s kinda cute and I dream of a private garden. But I suspect this house was here before the (presumably) commercial buildings either side and that makes me sad. Like Chinese nail houses.

SomeoneElse,

Someone posted one above: lemmy.world/comment/2377576In this thread @Emperor found some similar ones too.

SomeoneElse,

I was thinking whitewash and mirrors! If the owners of the buildings either side even allowed it that is.

SomeoneElse,

Tourism will play a huge part in helping the community recover economically too. They’re going to need tourists to stay/come back asap. I thought the Greek president was canny to offer tourists affected by the wildfires in Rhodes a free holiday next year.

SomeoneElse,

I was thinking more along the lines of a large proportion of locals must work in the tourist industry - whether that’s owning hotels, working in them, owning touristy shops, tour guides, surf instructors etc etc. The locals haven’t just suffered loss of life, property and sites of historic importance, a lot of them will lose their jobs without tourism. “Economy” was the wrong term I guess. People need those jobs not just to live but to rebuild their lives and their property.

Playing football may increase risk of Parkinson’s disease, study suggests (www.cnn.com)

Using data from a large online survey sponsored by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, researchers found that participants who had a history of playing organized tackle football were 61% more likely to report a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis or parkinsonism, an umbrella term for symptoms like tremors and...

SomeoneElse,

Do rugby players suffer concussions as frequently as American football players? If they don’t, could the helmets be making the problem worse - encouraging players to hit with their heads more, like a false sense of security? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don’t know anything about American football and not much more about rugby!

EDIT: it seems like rugby players are more prone to concussions than NFL players, but I might not be completely off the mark about helmets offering a false sense of protection:

“Rugby players are believed to play more aggressively when using scrum caps; however, studies have shown these make no difference for protecting against head injuries.”
