I'm starting to find some of the cooler aspects of the wider fediverse.

For instance, Lemmy is a Reddit clone that is picking up some migration after the recent hooha or at Reddit.

The cool thing is that it's federated (same as mastodon, different instances and everything).

This means that you can subscribe to any community on Lemmy, for instance

https://lemmy.world/c/showerthoughts

through its fediverse address, right here on your mastodon instance:

@showerthoughts

How did the showerthoughts tag result in the lemmy.world instance getting the post? Did all showerthouts communities get it, or is there only 1 community by that name?

Is it just me or does the Lemmy community actively ignoring the existence of kbin? I see a lot of posts explicitly mentioning Lemmy users but only posts from kbinners mention both platforms.

Not having a kbin account, kbin magazines look exactly the same as lemmy communities. It’s only when you are part of a kbin server would you see the extra functionality of threads and microblogs that kbin gives you.

On reflection, in the shower of course, I believe that Free Speach supposes intelligence before utterance. Shitposting does not.

Freedom of speech is the right of a person to articulate opinions and ideas without interference or retaliation from the government.

That’s it.

No one can say whatever they want, where ever they want.

If they owner of this server doesn’t like what you write, they can ban you. If you say something a business owner doesn’t like, they can ask you to leave, and if you don’t, the government that isn’t allowed to interfere with your articulation of opinions and ideas will instead, arrest you for trespassing.

Those of you among us who remember that Don Imus used to be a thing, why was he so influential and how did he slip completely from memory?

Well, he died in 2019.

He was entertaining for the times in which he was popular. Then in 2007 he made a major blunder after describing the Rutgers women’s college basketball team as “nappy headed hos.” He didn’t retire until 2018, but his career was never the same again.

As excited as I am about the Fediverse and its diversity, an all-in-one application is the real dream. I'm afraid efforts are splintering into too many redundant apps (15 at this point across both platforms) when they could be focused on the one app to rule them all with clean, working interfaces for as many federated applications as possible. With Fedilab already supporting Friendica, Mastodon, Pleroma, Pixelfed, Peertube, and even GNU Social (with plans to support CalcKey), adding Lemmy / Kbin would be a game changer for me and many others. Add Funkwhale and maybe WordPress and it's game over you never need to download any other apps.

Fair competition is great. Letting things develop naturally is the way to go.
