So I took the plunge and installed Fedora Silverblue because of all that immutable buzz. And it’s the most frustrating change I have made in almost 20 years of my distrohopping....
It’s immutable (aka. atomic), which means the system files cannot be changed, even by root. System updates come as complete system snapshots of the core filesystem, and everything else exists in containers or filesystem overlays (user directory is still writeable). Containers and the user’s home directory are unaffected by the updates, so the update process is typically much safer overall.
If an update does break something, you can easily do rpm-ostree rollback, and everything will be working again. On top of that, you can swap between versions with a simple rebase command (e.g. swap between Silverblue and Kinoite, Kinoite and Bazzite).
Only thing I haven’t figured out, yet, is how to install the Private Internet Access client. It uses a .run install script, and it fails when installing via rpm-ostree (tries to write to /etc) and doesn’t like being installed in a Distrobox (needs systemd).
But yeah, I’m currently looking at some other options for my main system to drop Windows, and I’m always comparing to Fedora Atomics, now.
Once a glamorous destination that attracted the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Abba, the Cypriot resort of Varosha was abandoned on 14 August 1974 when Turkey invaded. For 50 years, the town has been deserted, but in 2020 it was opened up to tourists.
Soil is a huge reservoir of carbon. There are around 1.5 trillion tons of organic carbon stored in soils across the world—about twice the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Scientists used to think that most of this carbon entered the soil when dead leaves and plant matter decomposed, but it’s now becoming clear that plant...
Yeah, no. Veganism isn’t going to save us. It’s not even a step towards a sustainable future. Insects will become a staple protein before the world becomes vegan, in no small part because it’s much more difficult to get the nutrition you need from a vegan diet without money.
These WASPs should spend their effort lobbying for an end to factory beef farms or for UBI.
No. They could restrict it, like they do with tobacco, but that’s far less ubiquitous than gasoline, so I don’t find it likely they’ll even do much in the way of restriction.
Plus, you’re not owed a date just because you think you otherwise deserve consideration. Superficial or not, people are entitled to decide what relationships they want to engage with upon whatever criteria they want.
Might mean they miss out on certain experiences, but that’s not your problem.
Probably best that you do the same (installing packages in the FS overlay kind of starts to defeat the point of containerization). You could try installing it with a distrobox and then exporting the app—see if that fixes your loading issues.
I run Bazzite on a gaming laptop from 2015, and I haven’t noticed any particularly long load times. Do you have some browser extension(s) that are maybe causing issues?
You can try rpm-ostree to install in the lowest userspace layer, but Bazzite purposely switched to flatpak Firefox and discourages installing software using rpm-ostree, unless you absolutely have to.
Nix might have been removed. I’ll have to check, but I feel like the ujust command forv setting up nix went away a version or two ago.
But I think you can set distroboxes to run at startup, so you’d never know the difference when it came time to actually launch the program. Right (correct me if I’m wrong)?
I love my electric kettle. I can get 5 cups of boiling water in about five minutes (less for less water).
And while a microwave is likely faster, it also heats the container. For a quick, single mug, it’s not an issue. Run that thing for five to heat a lot of water, and the container itself could be scorching hot.
Now that late spring/early summer is upon us, there’s increasingly more headlines about less rain in various places (recent floods notwithstanding). I’m assuming that’s because water is evaporating and not returning to those places, but where is it going?...
Cool, that’s more of what I meant when I said “where is it going?” I didn’t think it was disappearing; I more meant, “Where is it being stored or released?” Makes sense why there would be more of it when precipitation does show up, given that hotter air can store more.
I’m still curious, though, if certain local patterns are moving off to other locations. I’ll have to look into that aspect, now that I kind of have an idea what to look for.
It’s not the gotcha that they think it is. Increasing share of Linux, steam deck or not is progress. Any development or considerations made for the SteamDeck and its Arch based OS benefit the non SteamDeck Linux gaming scene too....
I don’t think we’ll see meaningful changes until it at least has wider market adoption on Windows. It’s still mostly a novelty at this point, even with the arrival of tech like the Apple Ski Goggles.
