TheRtRevKaiser, to usnews in FBI issues warning of China’s government possibly targeting US citizens who question Chinese Communist Party in Texas

I’ve found that usually is the case especially with “articles” like this on TV News channel sites, but I can’t find where any papers have picked up the story. They may still be following up on it, but I would expect if the Houston Chronicle winds up picking the story up they will have more details.

Honestly it’s kind of hard to know how to respond to this.

We recognize that “I was just joking” isn’t a universal defense, otherwise people wouldn’t have had an issue with minstrel shows. But as a society we’ve come to recognize that humor can be persuasive and can inform people’s beliefs about what others are like. It’s similar to how sites like 4chan that started out with cultures that were drenched in ironic racism eventually were just actually racist.

This was a really interesting look into the ways that board game mechanics can represent real-world systems in a way that provokes understanding or empathy.

There were also a couple of references to Gloomhaven that really made me laugh:

In 2021, researchers analyzed the ten thousand games with the highest rankings on the Web site BoardGameGeek, and found that, between 2000 and 2020, the average number of mechanics in new games had increased from roughly two and a half to four. The 2017 game Gloomhaven, which held the highest rating on the site for years, utilizes nineteen mechanics.

“Not everybody enjoys killing monsters in dungeons,” said Isaac Childres, the designer of Gloomhaven, which is about killing monsters in dungeons.

I’m not sure that I agree that we should dehumanize people just because the do something wrong or commit a crime. I think all sorts of people deserve sympathy, even those that have done wrong. I’m not saying at all that Somerton shouldn’t have to face the consequences of his actions or that what is happening to him is worse than what he did to others, but I don’t think that justice and empathy are mutually exclusive.

TheRtRevKaiser, to music in Todd in the Shadows: The Top Ten Worst Hit Songs of 2023 [44:12]
@TheRtRevKaiser@beehaw.org avatar

This video really made me realize how disconnected I’ve gotten from the top 40. I’m not one of those that is gonna go on a diatribe about pop not being real music, people are allowed to like whatever they like and music doesn’t have to be complicated or deep to be good. But I hadn’t realized how little I was listening to the radio these days. A decade ago I would have still probably been listening to radio stations in the car most days and so I would have some exposure to the top 40 as I was switching between stations, but I didn’t recognize a single song on this list, with the exception of the two really controversial ones - which I only recognized because I saw some of the backlash against them. I also noticed that Todd pointed out several times how much less it takes these days to get a song on the top 40. I wonder if that is because of how fractured the general listening public has gotten as radio has less sway when it comes to making hits. If anybody has any articles/videos on that I’d love to see them.

Yeah I’m with you, I don’t think there was a better way to do this (and it needed to be done). I don’t think Hbomberguy did anything wrong. But the whole episode has just left me (personally) feeling bad and I don’t love how much joy some folks seem to be getting watching somebody get taken apart. Not accusing anybody in this thread of that, I’ve just seen it in other places.

I can sympathize. I’m not sure I agree with you that Hbomb did anything wrong, but I did leave that video feeling pretty shitty in general. With the Tommy Tallarico thing it was so absurd and Tallarico is such a huge figure that it was just kind of funny, but this last video felt like watching somebody’s life being dismantled. It needed to be done, because Somerton was hurting folks and being dishonest. And I’m not sure that somebody with less clout than Hbomberguy could have done it. There were several examples of smaller creators calling Somerton out with little to no effect other than getting backlash from Somerton’s fans. But honestly the whole thing just kind of made me feel sad, I didn’t get much satisfaction out of it.

Dude, “from the data he provided” is a screenshot of a concert video from Nov 9, 1998 in Stockholm Sweden which (based on a quick search and look through their website) the “REMVideoArchive” site/channel you linked hasn’t uploaded. Neither was an official channel, the one you linked says in their about section that they’re a fansite that archives R.E.M. footage. Don’t accuse somebody of impersonating someone or stealing their work when you have zero evidence of it, that’s absolutely wild that you would do that.

TheRtRevKaiser, (edited ) to gaming in Best chiptune/gaming-inspired music?
@TheRtRevKaiser@beehaw.org avatar

I don’t know how “pure” you want your chiptunes to be, but for my money Master Boot Record is some of the best stuff out there. I would definitely say it’s at the very least gaming inspired if not pure chiptunes, and it kicks all kinds of ass. They’ve done a lot of covers of classic game music - Bloody Tears is a great one, as well as their cover of the Doom theme. But I really love their original stuff too. Internet Protocol is a 10/10 album to me.

Slightly less chiptunes but still absolutely gaming inspired is their side project Keygen Church. Tenebre Rosso Sangue from the Ultrakill soundtrack is probably their best known track. It’s sort of a chiptunes adjacent castlevania-metal vibe? It’s hard to describe but it absolutely destroys.

TheRtRevKaiser, to gaming in Kojima Productions and A24 to adapt live-action Death Stranding movie
@TheRtRevKaiser@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah IMO the more famous and respected Kojima has gotten, the worse his writing has been. And I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, he badly needs editors. I think it’s kind of like George Lucas in that they have a lot of ideas, some of which are really good and some of which are absolutely batshit. Sometimes those types of writers need someone who can ground them and tell them that they don’t have to put all of their ideas in.

TheRtRevKaiser, (edited ) to chat in I'm concerned that the continued existence of a certain post is normalizing Doxxing "people we don't like", and that's not okay.
@TheRtRevKaiser@beehaw.org avatar

I don’t know why you’re trying to start drama.

The Vice article was a news article that was reporting on this leak, but it didn’t name any names and didn’t link to the leaked database. The post in question also wasn’t a beehaw post, it was a federated post from lemmy.ml. Maybe I’m misunderstanding how federation works, but I would expect lemmy.ml’s mods to handle moderating those posts.

And, frankly, I’m not sure I disagree with the screenshot you posted elsewhere in this thread. I don’t think it was wrong for a person to leak the IronMarch forum database a few years ago, which exposed a bunch of Atomwaffen members in the US and neo-nazis elsewhere, and I’m not sure I think it’s wrong for someone to have leaked this db either.

This isn’t “it’s okay to dox people you disagree with” or calling people with different political opinions nazis. These are actual nazis.
