I have many friends and family who have joined the Scottish Police and given years of their lives to serving their communities, risking their own lives and health. Should I say fuck them too?
I joined the police for six months before deciding it wasn’t the career for me and got back into charity work. Are you saying Fuck Me now or just for the six months I was in? Did my fuckery expire?
How can thousands, millions of people doing a job be reduced to such a binary sentiment.
Trouble with that theory is that I think regular people won’t hear something like ‘All Cops Are Bastards’ and immediately think ‘well they probably don’t mean all cops’. It literally says it there.
Maybe because I’m Scottish living in Scotland I’m separate from the US side of the movement/argument but knowing so many good people in the service who have probably done more for their communities than some people spray painting on walls it just sounds so blatant. If it was a different slogan then I doubt people would have an issue with it but not everyone hears all the details about what it apparently means online or whatnot, they just see the words.
No desire to be pedantic at all, just explaining why a lot of folk won’t get behind the message.
Okay I agree with the idea of a rotten system as think that generally many legal or government institutions are rotten and self serving for the rich.
But the flaw in the argument from my perspective is that if all the decent people don’t go into the police, the ones with integrity, a moral compass who genuinely try to help people and do the right thing, then that leaves the bad apples.
So for going into a system and hoping to change it for the better, help/protect their community from criminals and the bad apples and make a real difference in lives, by that logic those people striving for better are still bastards and that just doesn’t feel right to me.
Yeah I get it, I just don’t like when things are reduced to all x’s are y’s, think that kind of polarised thinking isn’t helpful when the world has a whole lot of grey in it. Equally if someone is happy to post a comment like that online I don’t think there is anything bad about chatting it through like reasonable humans.
UPDATE: Despite saying they were using SteamOS on the homepage, they’ve since clarified that it’s actually “an optimized version based on HoloISO”. HoloISO seems to be a community compiled version of SteamOS. It’s very similar but it’s not officially SteamOS....
Also user friendliness. I tried Linux once at the behest of a programmer mate and just couldn’t get into it. I’m fairly confident with tech but going in cold scared me off whereas windows (and to a lesser extent back then, Mac OS) was safer.
Office 365 are the champs for the working world. Google are growing and Apple are…there but Office364 reigns supreme, in the UK at least.

I read Steiners book, a good read if anyone has access to it and very insightful. I really hope to see him at either Alpine or Sauber as he is such a unique character but can’t help feel that Haas didn’t want to spend the money to really move the team forward.
Maybe it’s trendy to hate on Koontz but I enjoyed his books when I was a bit younger. The Face, Watchers, TickTock and a couple others but I also liked Clive Cussler at the time so there is that. I think I found it easy to pick up and read as opposed to an investment like King.
A quick google says that Koontz has sold 450 million books and is worth over 200 million. I’m sure he is okay with not being some people’s favourite.
I’m Scottish as is my whole family and our nieces (5 of them) all say bucks, trash can, soccer ball. I’m quick to point out their errors but I have to give them a wee bit leeway but I draw the line at trick or treating.
What counts as a British accent? Not being awkward just curious as I see it mentioned usually by American folks a lot. Does it mean any accent from the UK?
In Scotland it was always called ‘guising’ (as in disguising) and we used to ‘dook for apples’ (bob for apples) and carve neeps (turnips) instead of pumpkins. I also remember a game of a treacle treat dangled on string that you had to eat with no hands but that was an old one with my grandparents.
Also it used to have to be something scary; wolves, witches, vampires, monsters. Now it’s essentially fancy dress.
Don’t get me wrong the team will probably tank it, scrape into the playoffs then get beat in the first round but watching the actual puck just now is ace!
Also being Scottish I am used to sports disappointment so not a problem there.

Work for a broadcaster in the UK in one of the back office support roles. We can all work from home for 2 or 3 days every week and the other 2 or 3 in the office.
It was initially ‘suggested’ post-Covid but from January it will be mandatory to do it as people were not sticking to the suggested days.
I believe we have two ferries going from east Scotland to Amsterdam and Bruges (or somewhere nearby) starting shortly. We also have Fred Olsen cruises from Scottish ports now too.
