@admin Can I ask if it's bad/annoying to report things if they haven't federated to our instance yet? For example, say I click on "Open original page" on a toot, and there's an abusive reply that doesn't show up on Blorbo. Should I still report that?

I've been assuming yes, partially so I can send a report to the person's home instance and partially so the person won't be able to leave nasty replies on Blorbo-havers' posts in the future, but I don't want to be a nuisance!

@xieliansbignaturals yes you can do that. It's fine & not annoying, in fact it may help to prevent other blorbo-havers from seeing the nasty

It's possible that the reply doesn't yet show on blorbo itself because the account or server is already blocked. But it doesn't matter, it's fine to report even if that's the case 😊

The 500-character limit isn't something I can change, but it may be possible for our hosting service to change it. It's not something I've asked about.

(I've mostly been assuming that the vanilla mastodon software would get updated at some point to make this selectable, and we could change our limit then.)

It's not the case. At the moment, our general policy on federation (from our About page) applies to Threads too.

We're currently discussing what to do about Threads specifically. I'd like to get a better understanding of the prevailing sentiment among blorbo-havers.

The mod team will make the decision, but haven't made it yet.

This policy applies to threads, and to any other corporate-backed fediverse server.

We're currently discussing our federation policy and whether it needs any changes.

(That's happening as a closed discussion because it doesn't need input from everyone on the fediverse, just our own blorbo-havers.)

I understand that there's been some recent discussion over there about whether it's legal to repost fanart without permission from the artist.

That sounds like a not-fun argument that we'll stay well away from.

We have a rule on blorbo.social that we don't allow reposting fanart without permission because it's a shitty thing to do to artists.

If you have permission, repost away! And please credit the artist too.

@okilies no, I haven't heard of that before 😕

I was able to make a contribution to blorbo through Open Collective a couple of days ago, and didn't encounter any errors.

I don't know much about the technical operation or possible bugs with Open Collective.

(I picked it mostly because it's been highly recommended by others as a good choice for this kind of community.)

Crossing fingers that it didn't actually take money out of your account a bunch of times, & it was just a temporary problem. 🤞

@gallifreygal Both of the things you asked about are interesting but not actually things I'm able to see.

We do see trending hashtags here: https://blorbo.social/explore/tags ... but those are the trends across all of the fediverse that Blorbo.Social sees, not hashtags used locally.

I reckon there is probably someone out there who has built a tool to track that sort of thing. I'd love to know it myself. That would probably also give us more of an idea of the most popular fandoms here.

@gallifreygal Regarding the servers we interact with the most, that's not visible to me either.

We can see the most active servers that are visible to us, but not how much we blorbo-havers interact with other servers.

As far as I can tell, Mastodon isn't the best fediverse software for tracking stats like that.

It's possible that other options (misskey, firefish, others?) might have better tracking & reporting options.

I haven't kept up with the features of other fediverse software, however

@scumsuck You wanted to know the most popular hours or timezones. I can't see that from our admin dashboard, so alas I can't answer that one at the moment. If at some point I can figure it out, I'll report back.

Regarding non-English posts, they're uncommon. About 7% of total posts in October.

I don't know what date we had the most signups, but July was the biggest month for signups.

@okilies My main disappointment is that people are still on Xitter, and that some have gone to bsky. I don't get it!

I mean, I guess I get it a little bit. People want to be where their friends are.

But also, Xitter is awful, and bsky looks like it's not much better, and the fediverse is RIGHT HERE people, come over here, it's nice!

Most of the time I try to keep a lid on posting anything negative, though. I want this space to be positive and welcoming, not just the Least Worst Alternative.

@okilies When I look at our local timeline, I guess we are pretty heavy on Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Thai fandoms, compared to the other fandom-focused servers.

I see a mix of media types, but probably weighted towards games and animation.

We also have our lovely Izzy Hands fandom.

Yes, I think so. It was hard to tell at first if this would be a huge thing, or die quickly and quietly, or somewhere in between.

My selfish motivation for doing this was beause I wanted to have a place for danmei twitter to go, which has not panned out. 😭 It seems a lot of danmei fandom is still rusted on over there, although I'm no longer on X and I've never joined bsky, so I'm not sure.

@okilies However, I'm really happy with the group of blorbo-havers here.

I think it's pretty great that about a third of all users who've ever signed up here are still active posters, in that they've posted at least once in the last month.

Apparently that's a really high sticking rate...? I don't really know much about it, having never attempted anything like this before.

It was actually bigger than I realised at first.

Fediverse Observer said 290 new signups, but I realised looking at the retention grid that it was actually 464.

I guess Fediverse Observer couldn't see all new accounts, maybe only the accounts that actually posted something...? In which case, I probably need to find a way to get a more accurate number of total accounts, too.

Hm I think the total account number from fediverse Observer is probably accurate. From admin back end, it looks like 1,623 accounts have been created, but some of those were never activated.
