Today I fought with the drawbacks of the Kindle. It is definitely too opinionated about how it wants to display an eBook.

I had to apply brute force (e.g. a horrible script to replace definition lists by divs with paragraphs inside).

Arghhh!

But now it works.

Ha, I didn't know that the MOBI file format for Kindle has been deprecated! Learned it today!👀 Good news for me as an author, I only need to support the EPUB format these days.

admin,

@skwee357 yes, nice!

Productive Writing and Marketing Day

Yesterday, I couldn't work on my book because of a dentist appointment. But today was very productive. I started the morning by linking Substack, ConvertKit, and Medium to my writing platform. This allows me to share sample chapters on these platforms.

By late morning, I dove into a serious writing session. I wrote 1,050 words about how to find future customers.

admin,

• The chapter discusses why listening is crucial for creating relevant offers and where to find potential customers.
• It explains why simple Google searches aren't enough and suggests indirect search strategies for gaining more customers.
• It also emphasizes the importance of understanding what your audience is searching for and to "hang out where THEY hang out".

I've successfully covered all these customer research topics in this new 1,050-word chapter which makes me feel quite pleased.

admin,

Today my writing work went really well:

What % of websites do you think will change the Twitter bird logo with an icon that says 𝕏?

🤔

admin,

@mijustin Maybe 1% or so. Not me, anyway.

• Shorten the time you need for
• You'll have more time for the work you truly love.
• Get 3 of 4 things out of the way quickly.

Yesterday I figured out how to create proper drawings for my upcoming book.

admin,

@deborahh they should scale for different page sizes, that means they must be vector based, not raster graphics.

And they should look equally good in print, in a PDF, and in eBook formats like ePub and Kindle.

admin,

@skwee357 • Create vector drawings in Affinity Designer
• Export to EPS for use in LaTeX => PDF and print version
• Export to SVG for use in EPub and Kindle eBooks

Works!

For the table of contents of my upcoming marketing book, I got feedback that said “it’s obviously correct but it does not sell the book”. So I thought I needed to have more engaging headlines for each part of the book. I used ChatGPT to do this. It turned version A into version B. What do you all think about version B vs. A?

admin,

Version A:
• Listening to the market so you know your audience and their problems • Positioning your product so that it appears as totally awesome and desirable
• Messaging your future customers so they understand and buy
• Planning and running marketing experiments to be seen and find out what resonates

admin,

• Tracking the success of your marketing efforts and learning from the results
• Developing a marketing strategy from what you learned until now
• Start to build a repeatable habit that you can keep forever without going nuts

admin,

Version B:

• Identify a Hungry Audience
• Embrace Your Product's Awesomeness
• Forge a Persuasive Narrative about Your Value
• Confront Customers with Your Message
• Garner Insights from Wins and Losses
• Transform Insights into more Marketing Gold
• Cultivate a Damn Good Marketing Habit

admin,

@johannarothman Ah, I see. Cool, thank you!

Yeah, confrontation is not what I want either. How about

"Reveal your Message to Customers"
"Make your Message Face Real Customers"
"Test Your Message on Real Customers"

admin,

@skwee357 Ah, good point!

admin,

@johannarothman I want to make my readers test their message with real people and see their reaction towards it. I’ll look which verb will be best here.

This weekend, I'm diving back into writing my book. It's an enjoyable learning experience becoming an author, and at the beginning, it involves some strategic planning:

• The first step was identifying who my target reader is - understanding exactly who I am writing for.
• Then, I had to establish the core message: short, clear, and transformative on its own.
• Next, I determined a promise or solution to offer these readers that could alleviate their struggles.

admin,

admin,

@skwee357 Thanks, Dmitry, for your good wishes!

• I am writing for solopreneurs who want to make money selling their own product, but they struggle with marketing and feel guilty of "not doing enough of it".
• They need to know that business owners can create a thriving business mostly doing what they love, while reducing marketing efforts to the necessary minimum.

admin,

@skwee357 • By the end of this book, you will have a framework to help you get your marketing done in reasonable time, so you can relax and focus your work on the product you love.

admin,

@skwee357 My tools:

• Scrivener for planning and writing
• Multimarkdown to generate HTML and LaTex
• LaTeX to get a beautiful print and PDF
• Calibre to generate Kindle and ePub books
• some homegrown shell scripts to hack it all together

admin,

@skwee357 I will publish super early chapters from time to time. Would you like to be a beta reader and help me iron out the quirks?
