"John Markoff’s New York Times article speculating about a vaporware Apple-branded mobile “iPhone” is getting a lot of traction. Go ahead and read it, but remember that it’s all bullshit speculation at this point."

I've recently come across two socially responsible French conglomerates of software developers, organized as either a cooperative or some other egalitarian business forms, and I wanted to make a huge shoutout to them.

Please visit their websites and, if you want and can, hire them for your next projects.

(Disclaimer: I'm not associated with either, I just find these organizations not only remarkable, but also necessary and fundamental.)

I hope there are many more! If you know some, please reply to this thread, thanks!

I've just spent a week at the "Casa The View" in Poschiavo (Southern Switzerland, near the border with Italy) and I can only recommend it. Also, it's seriously sold out, so plan in advance.

"As Harp climbed higher within American industry, the paradigm started to shift. Senior figures within other companies began to resent her presence at the top of the tech pyramid. What had begun as an unthreatening story of two housewives running an odd little business became one instead of two women successfully building and expanding their empire. (…)"

akosma,
@akosma@mastodon.online avatar

"(…) To many, this didn’t seem possible, and articles of the time suggested that Harp’s husband Bob played a larger role than he actually did. By diminishing the role of the two women in the success of their own company, readers were reassured—whether purposely or not—that behind every successful woman, there must be a man."

"After Vector went public in August 1981, the negative perception of Harp held by some executives only grew stronger. Female business icons were allowed, as long as they followed the unwritten rules and remained quiet and humble. Harp was proud of her company and her success, and was happy to call out individuals who treated her poorly, as she had done at that London meeting for Vector’s IPO."

@akosma@mastodon.online avatar

"In October 1987 Vector Graphic finally declared bankruptcy. By that point, Harp McGovern herself had been out of the picture for three years. That didn’t stop a number of journalists from treating its failure as unspoken vindication that housewives—and Ice Maidens—lacked the mettle to succeed."

I know that I must sound like the biggest nerd ever, but I know I'm not alone (particularly not in tihs network) when I say this:

number theory is seriously fun.

"Another potential issue is that the ants’ lack of discrimination about whom they help may also favour the evolution of free-riding ‘lazy workers’ in colonies, who selfishly prosper by exploiting their nest mates’ efforts."

Those are the famous Argentine Politician ants.

"Las Puertitas del Señor López es un retrato del hombre común, con sus falencias, secretos y deseos ocultos, pero también la confirmación de que el empleado más rutinario puede volverse autoritario si se presenta la ocasión como demuestra López al encontrar un silbato y una gorra abandonados y usarlas para perseguir a niños que pisan el césped o reprimir a parejas que intentan besarse en una plaza."

"The industrial design of the HP-35 was unusual not only for Hewlett-Packard, but for the electronics industry in general. Usually, the mechanical and electrical components of a product are determined before the exterior is designed. The HP-35 took the opposite approach."

So, I made a thing.

Did you know that Windows Notepad, at least since Windows 3.1, has a journaling option? Just create a file with the line ".LOG" on top, and every time you open the file, the current date and time gets inserted at the bottom.

Well, I wanted the same for Visual Studio Code, so here it goes.

I will try that. I’m on social medias because I have zero social skills so I’m afraid my interactions with random strangers will look rather sad or creepy or both.
