The boys were zonked last night while I played Star Wars Battlefront II. Not even a screaming Wookie could disturb them.

Two views of a Mississippian period (ca. AD 900-1700) deep bowl with out-flared, flat rim from eastern Arkansas (Phillips 1939, Pl. 51 E1-E2). The lip is ticked (small vertical notches). The rim has 2 opposing offsets, each with an embossed dot, meant to represent a fish head & eye. #ceramics #Archaeology

Things are popping around here!

No, really. Be sure to use protective eyewear when or doing other experiments. If you flintknap a whole lot, wear a mask to minimize silica dust inhalation (silicosis disease).

A heat-treated chert blank & a white Burlington/Keokuk (or similar) chert point fragment from one of my flintknapping errors. I'm using them to do some .

I was extremely surprised to find that the olive brown bands were oolites (Right).

Here (Left) is an oolitic pebble with a white chert matrix on one end & a translucent matrix on the other for comparison. 3/ #Archaeology #rocks

Yesterday I exposed an old flowerbed rock semi-circle around what was a red oak tree when we moved here. They are mostly Indigenous quarry rocks from sites in Florida that the State refused to curate. #Gardening

The other day I cut down the large groundsel bush (Baccharis halimifolia) that was growing in our burn pile. Walked by the remains today & went "Hmm."

As in this case, some yellow & red jasper can be extremely hard & difficult to . The hardness means it makes great, long-lasting flake tools & drills.

archeaids,
@archeaids@mastodon.online avatar

@GPJohnston I was thinking that. I had a jewelry quality block of red, yellow & black jasper approx. 10 x 15 x 3.5 cm a few years ago that I donated to an auction because it was too hard. I struck 1 flake off it & made this point & said enough.

White kaolin clay with a few ferric oxide stains from Andalusia, Alabama. At 2200C it fires to a salmon color. Many kaolin deposits were rejected because of impurities. At one time, the primary kaolin mine for Wedgwood Co. of England was in Mississippi.
