I've been flintknapping since about 1979, mostly using Citronelle gravel chert, which varies greatly. However, I've picked up or traded rocks from Oregon to west Texas & Florida & Maryland. Pardon me if after 45 years I can't remember exactly where some of it came from.😵‍💫

More recovered lithic material from the old shed. Here is a large flake of red & lavender Alibates agatized dolomite flint from the same stone that I used to make this Dalton point.

Lavender & rose color Dalton point with side indentations for hafting & concave base all on a black background.

Awaiting inspiration: L>R) Catahoula quartzitic sandstone (west-central Louisiana), multi-colored novaculite (Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas), & Tallahatta "quartzite" silicified sandstone (east-central Mississippi).

In the late 19th & early 20th C. there were several studies, some by the US Forestry Department, on the best wood, shape, preservative & longevity of crossties. Treated crossties were used for railroad lines, but logging & mining trams more often used untreated crossties & a mix of wood types since the tracks were temporary.

@archeaids@mastodon.online avatar

These were not used in construction. They were driven into the end of the occasional crosstie(s) being replaced or above the ground on a utility pole so they could tell how long the crosstie/pole had been there.

United States railroad date nails ranging from 1921 to 1950. Date nails were used on utility poles & railroad crossties (not every crosstie) from about 1900 into the 1970s. They have an embossed 2-digit year designation (e.g. "41" = 1941).

@Basmitharts In the region it occurs within in eastern Texas & western Louisiana it depends on the terrain. It is often found in creek bottoms, gullies & hill slopes. Most of the small pieces I show came from the shoreline of Toledo Bend Reservoir where it can be found as a thin spread of gravel in places.

archeaids,
@archeaids@mastodon.online avatar

@Basmitharts While working on a seismograph crew in east-central Texas in the early 1980s we would find entire 100' logs with 20' branches in the hills. At the time there were several firms in Houston that built petrified wood fireplaces. When the Toledo Bend dam site was excavated in the early 1960s they unearthed a few dozen whole petrified logs of various species.

So, @archeaids has been posting some cool flaked tools and that reminded me about this rad quartz preform I found out by Reserve.

The same flake seen end on.
The same flake seen from the side.

archeaids,
@archeaids@mastodon.online avatar

@ipxfong That doesn't look like quartz to me with that fine grain. If it was over here I'd call it novaculite, but over there probably a white translucent chalcedonic material.
