Why are people hyped about RSS regaining relevance? (lemmy.world)

According to Google Trends, during the past few years, there has been nothing but a few minor bumps that faded away as quickly as they came. I love RSS because i do not have to scroll through dozens of different news sites all day and i would love it to return....

atrielienz,

Some of us are “hyped” about it because when RSS fell out of favor we lost some of the RSS feeds we were using. This forced some of us to go looking for alternatives because the sites that had RSS feeds and dropped them were no longer accessible that way. And given that we see less ads and have to deal with less algorithms this way, we enjoy using RSS. If it becomes relevant enough again maybe those sources that were lost will come back. To be fair that’s probably a pipe dream. But ease of use, and use case are definitely some of the reasons.

  • atrielienz,

I actually have found a use for one note. Editing large schematics. That’s it. It’s a very narrow use case.

    atrielienz,

No offense but this is kind of what happens in real life too. Nazi shows up to local bar. Barman or owner doesn’t throw them out. Eventually they invite their friends. It winds up being known a Nazi bar. People who don’t want to associate with Nazis no longer visit the bar. This is why intolerance of the intolerant is a thing.

    atrielienz,

I’m. Just gonna say you may actually be able to find these flavors in the US if you happen to visit Asian centric grocery stores.

    atrielienz,

Depends on how you’re viewing Lemmy. And more importantly, I’m not sure why this rates such a vitriolic comment.

    atrielienz,

You don’t have to placate me. It shows part of the text and that depends on the setting you have set. Some articles don’t show at all because of my pihole or other settings on my phone. You made an assumption. And while I didn’t read the whole article, I literally just added my two cents which is kind of what platforms like this are here for.

    atrielienz,

I’m buying the pixel 8 (have the pixel 7) because I want a smaller phone.

It’s the context. There has always been the stereotype of the starving artist which is quite prolific in our society. As a result it is already thought that as an artist you are not marketable or that you are not valuable enough to pay. As a result a lot of companies coughcouthwotccoughcough are already in hot water for refusing to pay artists. And now they’re using tools based on those artists actual work to generate art in the style of those artists for profit and the artists still won’t be getting paid for their work? Doesn’t seem fair. I don’t want to see it with writing or publishing of any kind. I don’t want to see AI generated art at the cost of the people who make real art. And further I don’t want people to use AI that’s been trained on the hard work of others (without recompense to those people who’s work the AI is being trained on) without their consent. That’s what’s happening.

What WOTC for caught out on was an artist using the generative AI system to enhance artwork they created. I don’t necessarily see a problem with that, except when you consider the other artwork the AI has been trained on.

    atrielienz,

And it’s pissing users like me off. I have one laptop for work and one for home. My work laptop has a professional work profile and for some of the programs I’m required to use I need Microsoft apps like edge and office. As a result I get these popups non stop when opening edge. I also am not an administrator on the work laptop so I literally cannot just decide to upgrade from windows 10 to Windows 11. If the damn thing would stop blocking my work flow with full page ads, that would be awesome.

    atrielienz,

So would Google to some extent. This actually sounds like a good plan. We should go back to the 90’s antitrust law. Before we made it toothless and basically unenforceable.

    atrielienz,

I did this with the registry edits on my personal computer. However. This does nothing at all to help with those of us still seeing this stuff on work computers or places where we are not the administrator.

    atrielienz,

On my work laptop (surface pro) I get these popups randomly. Usually it happens when I restart or after an update. On my home laptop (also surface pro), I mostly get them when I need to open Edge or another program from home that I use for work. Usually because it’s not set as the default. It happened enough that on my personal home laptop (which I’m choosing not to update to windows 11), I actually edited the registry to stop it from suggesting Bing, Edge, and Windows 11. On my work laptop I can’t do that (no administrator access) so I see these things all the time. Full screen popups for Windows 11 (which has compatibility issues with some of the software I use for work), switch to edge popups (usually when I open a PDF in Adobe or similar), that kind of thing. I didn’t set the defaults on the work laptop. It was issued to me this way. I am using it as the company I work for has intended and at up via their IT department.

To be fair though, I’ve seen Google do similar in Chrome when my default browser is set to Firefox at home. I have chrome for the occasional Google service I use that may require it for added use case. But it’s not the default. Gmail is good for this. I see popup ads for Google Fi (which I use) all the time. Same with drive and the YouTube premium ads are everywhere. That’s also not okay but at least it’s just in the browser. I don’t see this nonsense Everytime I wake the computer from sleep mode.

    atrielienz,

If they did that should still be allowed. Despite the fact that I know it’s not allowed and against their TOS.

    atrielienz,

What is the current PC word?

    atrielienz, (edited )

For my pixel 7 I’ve got a dbrand case. I like it because it shields the camera and makes the back flat rather than letting the camera bump stick out. Great protection for drops but maybe a bit bulky if you don’t like the OtterBox style.

    atrielienz,

I bought two switches. I had an original second Gen one. I got it for Christmas as a present from hubs (technically). When the splatoon OLED came out I really wanted the better kickstand and I really liked the styling and bigger screen. I saw one in a store by happenstance and picked it up. I ended up giving my first one away to one of my friends who doesn’t have much money but wanted to play the new Zelda game. Something similar happened with my hubby. He found a Zelda ToTK switch somewhere, bought it and gave his old switch to his younger brother. Technically I also bought a switch for my mom so she could play animal crossing. So together my family has in fact bought at varying times a total of 5 switch consoles. That’s not including my son who has one (we didn’t buy it, his grandparents did). We share a Nintendo Switch online family account.

    atrielienz,

I actually wonder if the point is to launder money through it? You buy it at a certain valuation. You tank it while promising investors that you have big ideas that will have them making money hand over fist in no time. You instead, make significant investment elsewhere using an unknown shell company or something to invest in its competitors, forcing users off the original platform and onto something else that makes you money. You insure it in some way so that you can get a payout when it finally whistles it’s last death rattle, the investors get a payout, you get a payout, the platform dies, and you move on to something else.

I have no idea how it all works but haven’t most of us seen The Producers? Same basic premise. Bet against yourself. Take the winnings while leaving the liability elsewhere.

    atrielienz,

I do recommend it. It’s great fun and I found it very enjoyable.

    atrielienz,

I use it for ice cream. There’s a place that makes their own flavors in house and one of the best ways to find out what they have besides checking in (they’re not exactly super local to me) is to check their Facebook page. That and occasionally family contact in the event that someone loses a phone or something. That’s literally it.

    atrielienz,

How I feel now everytime I load up a new 8bit indie game. I want those kinds of game mechanics. I want those style of games from the perspective of playstyle. I do not enjoy 8bit graphics.

    atrielienz,

Yeah. I have a similar experience. Those developers were working pretty hard within the constraints of the mediums they were working with and they made some truly amazing stuff as a result. I feel like 8bit is an attempt at nostalgia in new games and it doesn’t land for me. I know I’m probably in the minority. That’s okay though.

    atrielienz,

This is the problem I’m having now and I don’t know how to go back.

    atrielienz,

The fifth elephant. It actually made me read through all the other Rincewind books and then everything else I could find by Mr Pratchett. Loved his world building.

    atrielienz,

Nightwatch and Going Postal. I’m also very fond of The Truth.
