YSK: A car takes uses about seven seconds worth of fuel to start up. If you are going to idle for a period of time longer than that, you'll save fuel by turning your engine off.

Why YSK: People seem to, on average, think that a car takes a lot of fuel to start up. In reality, it takes on the order of a few millilitres of fuel to start an engine. That means if your car isn't equipped with an automatic start/stop system to stop your engine instead of idling, it saves fuel to turn off your engine and start...

boonhet,

Caveat: For cars not equipped with automatic start/stop, the starter and possibly the battery might not be specced for it so it could cause additional wear. Cars with start/stop systems often assist the process with precise camshaft position measurements and the ability to squirt fuel pretty much right away so the starter doesn't need to do as much work.

Also don't do it with a cold engine - it's better to get the oil up to temp faster, it'll also reduce fuel consumption as the engine heats up.

boonhet,

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend long idling*, but I also wouldn't recommend shutting down the engine for short stops when it's cold. Just keep it running if you're stopping for less than 5 minutes.

  • Where I live, the winters can get to around -30C, though normally it won't get colder than -25. You'll want to let your car idle for a few minutes because otherwise it's not going to be blowing any warm air at the windshield, and your visibility will be shit.
boonhet,

There are no hard rules, cars are different and so are oils, but I personally would give it a few minutes under 0F and maybe up to a minute if it's just a bit under the freezing point, but not too cold.

Of course, something like a 0w30 oil will get pumped around the engine much faster in the cold than a 10w30 or 10w40 and therefore won't need as much time.

Also, idling isn't terribly good for your engine either, you should only do it enough to get the oil flowing and the blower to start putting out a tiny bit of warmth. Then you're better off driving, because that warms up the engine faster.

boonhet,

If you've ever owned an older car, you know that this is the absolute best approach.

Good luck getting exceptionally niche advice for things like that on reddit. Forums get so much more specific, you get an entire forum dedicated to one car model that was only built for 5 years and a bunch of people there know literally everything about it, like the fact that you're better off getting an aftermarket PCV valve because those are built a bit better and don't fail early, or the fact that the shifter cable has the tendency to get water in it so you better be careful shifting out of park on a really cold morning, you might just snap the cable if it's old.

boonhet,

I've said it numerous times over the years, the Internet has been centralizing rapidly and it benefits none of us.

In 2005 you'd wander around, going from peoples' personal pages to forums to whatever else people linked. In 2015 half of those websites were dead because everyone got their content on reddit anyway.

boonhet,

Invidious got hit by a cease and desist so they might be shutting down their operations. But yes, I believe it would be immune to those blocks unless they change their API.

boonhet,

So far Spez's legacy includes, in no particular order:

  • Changing other peoples' comments
  • Starting a war with the 3rd party app devs who made reddit the easily accessible platform it is (browsing reddit on the toilet wasn't nearly as common before the first apps came out, and all of the first ones were 3rd party)
  • Being a moderator on the jailbait subreddit, a community for sharing sexually suggestive pictures of underage teenage girls
  • Forcing new moderation teams on communities whose moderation he didn't agree with
  • Straight up lying about the 3rd party apps and their developers every step of the way

Way to go, Steve Huffman! You had a community of volunteers build your platform for you and now you're taking it all away from them. I'm sure this won't backfire.

boonhet,

Yes. I believe it was people on the donald subreddit, which could be seen as funny, because most sane people (myself included) don't agree with them politically, but it's still a huge misuse of admin powers and proof that he has no integrity. Can't let other peoples' rights be violated if we want to keep our own.

boonhet,

It's not like it was a small sub either, IIRC. I'm not going to google jailbait to find the stories, but it must've been a few hundred thousand subscribers I think. At a time when the big subs had a few mill at most.

boonhet,

It's simply barely an improvement over the 3060ti.

If you can get either one for the same price, the 4060ti is the better choice. If there's even a 10% price difference, the 3060ti is a better choice.

boonhet,
