Tesla Software Update Traps TikToker Inside 115-Degree Car (gizmodo.com)

According to the Tesla owner’s manual, “Vehicle functions, including some safety systems and opening or closing the doors or windows, may be limited or disabled when installation is in progress and you could damage the vehicle.” Janel chose to heed Tesla’s warning and did not attempt to open her doors or windows during...

boonhet,

especially if you do not expect the automatic mode of operation to be fully functional 100% of the time?

It’s Tesla. What makes you think they expect their software to work anything less than 100% of the time without any bugs?

boonhet,

I’m not one to oppose electric windows on a car, but I’ve certainly managed to avoid touchscreens so far (going as new as 2019 in my current/last Mercedes, even - unfortunately they ruined everything and went all-in on touch shortly afterwards).

I’d rather spend the extra money on more horsepower or a better suspension than on a crappy infotainment system that only ever shows the Carplay loading message and then is replaced by Carplay.

boonhet,

Musk was hated by a lot of people long before his takeover of Twitter, and by many before he even started going all political. The EnoughMuskSpam subreddit has existed for 8 years.

The man shills solutions that don’t work (Hyperloop) to oppose public transit projects so the US would stay car dependent, lets his company operate with near zero quality control (literally, interior panels often just… fall off on Teslas a couple of days or weeks after delivery?) and so on. This was all long before 2020, which is the year he turned into a right-wing nutter because… checks notes … the lockdowns were affecting Tesla’s revenue and he wanted to be able to force his employees to continue working in unsafe conditions.

boonhet,

I’ve honestly been considering giving up my car for an electric scooter for the summer - my wife will keep her car, so we can still go to places with the family, but I don’t need a car for my work commute. At the same time, I’m too lazy to wake up early enough to walk.

Helps that I live in a medium sized European town. Escooters and bikes are very viable - and you can rent them for a low fee too, from multiple providers (I do wish they didn’t each require their own app, but of course they do).

boonhet,

I’ve taken the local rental scooters a bunch of times, they’re great utility, but quite worn. I used to cycle a bunch, but for short distances I actually prefer the scooter.

boonhet,

We have plenty of scenarios where two cars make sense, but for a while we can do without.

80 Percent of Global CO2 Emissions Come From Just 57 Companies, Report Shows (www.smithsonianmag.com)

A new analysis released last week by the international non-profit InfluenceMap reveals an overwhelmingly unequal share of fossil fuel pollution worldwide. From 2016 to 2022, 80 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions were produced by just 57 companies.

boonhet,

The top ones in a previous iteration of the list were all oil, coal and other energy companies. I believe Saudi Aramco led the list by a wide margin.

So yes, reducing our oil dependence is about the only way we can affect these companies.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

boonhet,

You can try out Odoo, it’s heavily customizable so you can add in the parts you don’t find existing modules for - and customize existing modules too.

boonhet,

spread across multiple FOSS alternatives

And you’ve already lost hopes of gaining significant market share.

The fact that Facebook does everything is what keeps people coming back. I haven’t scrolled my feed in years, but I still make use of Marketplace and Messenger sometimes. It’s the network effect at play too.

boonhet,

Free in FOSS stands more for what you’re allowed to do than what it costs. The devs have to support themselves somehow, the project is absolutely massive and has a bunch of dedicated developers on the payroll.

boonhet,

You get access to the source code you use. If you pay for an enterprise license, you can access the enterprise source code too, but it’s indeed a proprietary license, you can’t really sell modifications.

I do wish it was fully free & open source (because that wouldn’t affect me, I’m not on their payroll, I just work with the software), but I still prefer the current model over Dynamics 365 or SAP (though I believe Microsoft open sourced some or all of their Dynamics 365 Business Central code too? I haven’t really kept up).

If Odoo ever decides to close their open source business and only offer it with a closed source, you bet your ass there are going to be dozens of forks of the latest open source version. I’m fairly sure my own employer would do the same, our CTO is an open source evangelist. Would probably RiiR the core even.

Not sure why you think the FTC would be the best body to talk to here. Odoo is not an American company, but rather a Belgian one.

boonhet,

There’s a localization module available for the US, it should handle the arcane tax code and everything, but I haven’t tried.

Which movies have aged like fine wine? (either in their message or cinematography)

I recently saw ‘Don’t Look Now’ (1973). Good picture, a little slow perhaps by today’s standards but worthy of any movie enjoyer’s time! So this movie was shot in Venice. Venice itself being an already beautiful spot to film even today. The way we get to look in a time capsule of Venice in the 70s makes the movie that...

boonhet,

It’s a novelty account. They promo the Barbie movie whereever possible.

boonhet,

When I was on Windows, I used SumatraPDF. It’s literally tiny and I never really missed any features.

boonhet,

Jesus your country is so messed up :(

boonhet,

That should properly read, “Wrong fucking use, by jackasses.”

Wait till you hear about the two different uses of the word “literally”.

Language evolves. It’s the job of linguists to keep up, not to guide it.

boonhet,

You think mighty highly of yourself. No single individual is an evolutionary pressure, unless you actively kill people for using phrases wrong or something.

boonhet,

An immeasurable one fighting against an overwhelmingly large opposition.

boonhet,

So much shit happened there I could write a book about it.

Please do! Or at least a series of blog or fediverse posts.

boonhet,

The clueless look he’s got reminds me of Ohforf from The Noob Comic.

boonhet,

Ah yeah, I googled the PVZ references I saw in the comments and found him. But the look just reminded me of the aforementioned character too.

boonhet, (edited )

As an Estonian, I’d rather write C than Finnish too. Finnish just looks like you’re writing Estonian, but had a stroke.

boonhet,

Probably.

Tbf with Estonian and Finnish, it’s like they took what was weird about our language and amplified it lol

Umlauts everywhere!

boonhet,

I’m not American and have no student loans and even I’m glad he’s doing it. There might be a common stereotype internationally that Americans are fat lazy assholes, but to tell you the truth, the Americans I know or have met have been the absolute nicest people I know. The ones I work with regularly are also crazy hard workers. There’s a lot of potential for good in the US, but oppressive economic systems get in the way for a lot of people and it’s just heartbreaking to see.

I myself would love to live in the US, I’d live a very comfortable life as a software engineer, but I just couldn’t do it to my future children (there’s one well on the way) - the knowledge that they might have to go into debt for medical or education reasons is just too much for me. And while I have a good career, I’ll probably never be truly financially independent to the point I could just handle any unexpected expense regardless of magnitude.
