How to subscribe to communities from other instances that wont load?

Hey, so, I'm trying to subscribe to a few communities from lemmy.ca such as !alberta and !calgary. https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/c/canada@lemmy.ca works and loads properly so I was able to subscribe, but these two smaller ones just give an error 404: couldnt_find_community. I can confirm these do exist since going to the lemmy.ca...

Put !alberta into the search bar and be patient lol Refresh and try again if it doesn’t pop up after a couple minutes

Sometimes it can take minutes for the backend to fetch the remote community or even fail if the remote server is under load with no error message on your side.

The search thing is normal if no other user on our instance has searched/subscribed to that community. Annoying but if you know you got the link right, hit reload and the server will usually have loaded it lol

I just looked at the Rust code from https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/blob/main/crates/api_common/src/community.rs

and it looks like you need to give it params to get what you need, i.e.

curl https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/api/v3/community/list?type_=Local&sort=Active&limit=50 | jq

Returns the top 50 local communities sorted by Active

Totally fine with this, but I’m curious how weights/disabling downvotes works? Like does the 5:1 downvotes weight apply to downvotes everywhere, even on other instances that have normal weights? Or is it just for communities that are hosted on blahaj.zone?
