Because the established elite on SO are fucking dicks. You can’t ask a question anymore. It’s literally impossible to open a new thread. Yeah, a lot of troubleshooting has been answered, but do you really think the burden should be on the new user to know literally every single existing thread on the site? No, that’s absolutely absurd, and when some moderator or poweruser comes in and tells the newbie to go fuck himself for lack of research it’s pretty obvious why nobody wants to use the platform when the moderatorship is basically actively antagonistic to anybody seeking information, which is literally the point of the site.

I’m glad it’s been crawled by GPT. I’m glad because the bot gives me no sass at all when I ask it to audit my code. It does it without any malice or bullshit and it saves me time from doing the research because everything is in the LLM DB already.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve had great success with LLMs troubleshooting my code independently without needing to consult a peer.

It’s easier than looking on StackOverflow because it already crawled the answers there and it’s been programmed to drop the sass unless you ask it to be sassy specifically. All the knowledge without the elitism.

Hot take: Discord is a piece of shit (aussie.zone)

I may just be yelling at clouds here, but it seems to me like Discord is just IRC with pictures added. Or Skype with text added. Whatever analogy it is, what it isn’t is a suitable replacement for a threaded forum like Reddit / Lemmy. Or you know… proper old-school forums like phpbb and invision and what not....

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

Everybody compares Discord to what came before but calling it a shitty Teamspeak really does a disservice to how much improvement on the existing platforms Discord actually made. Things like audio quality, in-platform screen sharing and streaming, a persistent chat more like IRC than a VOIP system, etc, are all things that Discord does really really well above and beyond our old systems.

Those forum and chat features allow for greater coordination in a simpler space than what was required in the past. I don’t need to host anything like a website or do any weird workarounds to show strategies and pictures for our WoW fights. It just works inline, and we have a dedicated strat channel. That’s not something we could have done in Vent or Teamspeak, and I remember that back in the day we used to run things like WoW-Enjin sites so we could have a forum to discuss strategies. I’m super glad I don’t need that anymore.

I remember Vent. I remember Teamspeak. They sucked. I’ll take the feature bloated Discord any day of the week over those old platforms.

It’s been getting worse, yeah. Some things get better, other things get worse. Overall I think the platform is in better shape than reddit because while they are pushing unpopular changes it doesn’t really make a difference to the main experience of using the platform. With reddit’s changes it fucked the majority of the userbase up by disallowing them from using their preferred clients and impacted general day-to-day site use. That’s not the case generally when Discord pushes a dumb update. Nitro’s gotten more expensive but the platform works totally fine without paying for the extra bells and whistles. It feels like the hardest and least liked change was the removal of discriminators and that’s not a real major change to the core use of the platform so much as it was a minor annoyance to pick a new name.

Licensing is a no-go. There’s no way Paramount would sell any iota of the Star Trek IP for movies or TV shows.

You might not be aware of the fan film fiasco, but essentially back in the day people used to be able to do all kinds of cool things including bringing in Trek alumni actors to play parts in their fan films until a man named Alec Peters went a few steps too far. Initially the main complaint was that he was using the Star Trek IP to essentially launch his own competing studio, but he did some boneheaded things like illegally selling branded Star Trek merch. Guy was literally selling Axanar coffee at one point. He was taken to court and Paramount released an entirely new massively restrictive rule set for any fan project, shutting down those not in compliance.

The only way you’re going to get access to this content is through piracy. That’s the only universal answer to when studios randomly scrub things off their platforms.

I remember when Netflix just started up and we were fresh off the end of ENT. Doug Drexler and a lot of the crew were trying to see if they could get Paramount to let Netflix do a final s5 for ENT, and it went absolutely nowhere but it was a nice little hype train for a while wishing that I could see the Romulan war.

Anyone else out there who actually really loved Discovery's S1 style of Klingons?

I am the kind of person who enjoys “big weird” scifi like Stanisław Lem. Stories about trying to relate to and find common ground with something so alien that the prospect of even understanding is basically hopeless. Star Trek usually doesn’t do stories that, which makes sense as it often uses alien races as allegories or...

They would have been fine with hair. The whole thing where everyone is bald was the point that made it look bad.

I have pictures of T’kuvma photoshopped with hair and he looks great.

Another thing I want to mention is that Gene himself never held the series up to visual continuity. When the budget got better, the sets got better and so did the makeup. It was just a natural progression of the series. I don’t feel like it’s a stretch to keep trying to improve on alien appearances, especially as the aesthetic for the show changes and evolves. I like the SNW bridge update. I like that it’s all metal and glass and feels substantial.

My main issue was less about how they looked and more about what they were capable of. The idea of being able to essentially species change a Klingon into a Human with TOS-era Klingon medical tech sounds impossibly advanced for what the Klingons are known for. Their scientists are few and far between, and even in TNG it’s elaborated on that treatments for disabilities aren’t even looked into, they just tell you to kill yourself. That doesn’t sound like the kind of species that 100 years prior is going to be able to do this insane medical procedure.

I think Emony was actually the one that hooked up with McCoy. IIRC Enmony was the gymnast and dancer and she was comparing her capabilities with McCoy’s “hands of a surgeon”.

I liked the way they talked about science from a warrior race in Mass Effect. The Krogans have scientists but they’re mostly focused on making bigger bangs and booms. I would probably assume the Klingons are similar.

I know we have a few episodes showing other sides of the castes but generally we only interact with the warrior caste and occasionally see arbiters like in Rules of Engagement (DS9) or Judgement (ENT).

The only time we saw an actual Klingon scientist was in a TNG episode where they had figured out meta-phasic shields or something that allowed shuttles to get closer to a sun than ever before. Crusher was even dealing with some prejudice regarding Klingon scientists and has a few lines about how it feels weird to be working with a Klingon not focused on war and battle.

Yeah I like the concept of chronicling all these happenings but declaring them to be dramatic circumstances is not only trying to be divisive for it’s own sake, it’s also just a bald-faced lie in most cases.

We shouldn’t emulate reddit’s toxic bullshit like SRD. Defederating happens, and it’s not a big deal. Pretending like it is actively makes the platform worse.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

This is dumb as fuck. There’s so many things to make fun of Musk for and you need to resort to Godwinning? That’s not only unfunny but it reduces that validity of your complaints against the guy who deserves to be flamed because your hyperbolic shouting and claiming everybody you disagree with is a nazi discredits your position immediately.

Yeah, Musk sucks. Yeah the X is dumb. Did it need to be photoshopped into a Nazi flag to be described as dumb? Nope, the entire rest of the site has been hating on this guy without needlessly Godwinning.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

This comment is a perfect microcosm of smug rudeness. You want to know why people are running to the extremes? It’s because you treat people like shit and then expect them to agree with your ideology when you’ve berated them and belittled them for disagreeing. It’s not a conversation, it’s not a discussion, it’s just insulting.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

There are no other insults anymore. You’re either a communist or a nazi. That’s it. There’s no more in between.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

Twitter was always a cesspool, and regardless of if the majority of opinions are left or right leaning, it’s a toxic environment no matter who is at the head of the hydra.

Prior to the Musk takeover it was a leftist echo chamber, and there was all kinds of witch hunting and cancellations based on groupthink.

I don’t think either extremes should be given a platform, and all I see on Twitter is that Musk leveled the playing field so that both sides get to shout as much vitriol as they want.

It all adds up. The reason these people flock to the far right is because they don’t see any other options. They’re lonely, sad, with little to no support networks. The far right preys on people like that to convert them to their cause. I remember when it started happening in World of Warcraft. It’s totally changed the entire landscape of the gaming community. It definitely doesn’t help when the other side is constantly name-calling. I certainly have a hard time reasoning with somebody who’s already made up their mind and started hurling insults.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

The problem is that your radar is broken and you are flagging everybody as a Nazi. That’s not productive and I would argue it detracts from most of your messaging. You keep throwing around terms like “intellectual deficiency” and then wonder why people are rejecting your premises.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s outrageous that we’ve gotten to the point where the only thing we can do is shout at each other. There are no civil discussions anymore. I walk into a thread like this, speak my peace, get insulted and do some insulting. Ultimately it’s not productive for anyone, because nobody is convincing each other of anything, they’re just yelling labels and names at each other.

When everybody is super, nobody is.

When everybody is a nazi, nobody is.

When everybody is a communist, nobody is.

Shouting these terms has basically lost all meaning.

The Moka Pot is for espresso. The way you use it properly is to pre-boil the water in the bottom portion and then apply the heat from the stove to minimize the overall scorching from overheating the frame. My grandparents always started from cold and I start from warm and it makes a world of difference in taste and power.

If you’re consistently brewing coffee and not espresso the AeroPress is a no-brainer. It makes an incredible cup that really brings out the flavors in great coffee. When I want to show somebody a good single origin to demonstrate the funky flavors I will always brew with an AeroPress because it’s very clean. The Moka pot can do this for good espresso, provided you start from warm water.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s fun to karate-chop the grinds and filter off the plunger into a can. It’s one of my favorite parts of brewing the cup.

canis_majoris,
@canis_majoris@lemmy.ca avatar

I boil the water in a kettle and then put it in the bottom and on the stove with the rest of the apperatus. I’ve never had it be finnicky since I’ve started the brew from warm.

The real issue with the Moka is that the metal superstructure gets overheated and it causes the coffee to scorch. I’ve had that problem my entire life and never cared enough about coffee to go and try figure it out, but after speaking with some of my friends we found that starting from warm was the key to a foolproof Moka.

Yeah, I’m definitely opening myself up to issues by having installed Arch instead of Ubuntu, but as much as I’ll bitch about these problems existing, I really do enjoy the process of fiddling and troubleshooting.

I find Ubuntu can be used right out of the box for productivity depending on your workload and general productivity tools - personally my shop primarily uses Gsuite stuff so I can access everything within the browser, making most of what I do generally agnostic to environment. The main thing I liked about Ubuntu is all the changes MS have made to it, including things like having cloud connectivity for GDrive and OneDrive out of the box, instead of needing some kind of hacky weird solution. I find Ubuntu with all the MS contributions has become a very good productivity OS on top of being a solid server to be using with Hyper-V.
