Hello,

Storage issues solved with my instance, let's get a better uptime!

I discovered yesterday that, at some time, some could have alternative instruction sets. I never heard of this before!

And I was wondering: could this technique be helpful given our current needs of performance mixed with low-power?

Could simple instructions get directly executed by a RISC core instead of having to be processed by a CISC core, while maintaining some sort of compatibility with the current software?

I can't help but think at some point this alternative instruction set thing could be reused in some way.

By the way, here are the pages where I learnt about this:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEC_V20
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_Instruction_Set

i know we love to hate on youtube but swearing is something i think creators get too paranoid about

"fuck" was in one of my cyberpunk videos ~40 times & there were no issues whatsoever

(granted, 100% of these was in-game dialogue & me reading text aloud)

@Welonz
@ajnn
Also (and that is something YouTube don't officially admit) the video can* get "shadow-banned", meaning it won't appear in the recommendations suggested by the algorithm, nor sometimes even in the subscribers' feed. Or put an age limit on the video. And it may impact the whole channel visibility if the P-score is still a thing.

  • "can" because it isn't systematic. It seems like any moderator can decide on their own what will be the fate of the video. The situation can change if the video is reviewed again, but if one day another moderator decides to they can cancel other moderators actions. In short, it is a mess.
    Some creators seem to be more lucky than others, for whatever obscure reason. On the French YouTube there is a running joke about a video creator who got his videos de-monetised because he showed footages of Cyberpunk 2077 and Duke Nukem, while others don't have a single issue making an whole playthrough of these games...

TL;DR: I can't recommend PeerTube even though I like the intentions behind the project.
Long version:
Getting visibility on PeerTube is even more complicated because you have to be on an instance that peers with the main instances people are on... Even though it is compatible with Mastodon it has not the same behaviour regarding federation.
And public PeerTube instances have very limited quotas. It'd be expensive I think to upload videos with a length similar to Welonz's and at the same pace.
Therefore, I wouldn't recommend PeerTube (oof unpopular opinion on Mastodon) in the state its ecosystem currently is. I would recommend it in the future if and only if there are instances which can provide more storage at zero cost, monetisation to the creators and to themselves (the former to make it profitable for creators to switch, the latter to keep themselves durable -losing content because an instance closes down would be terrible), and finally letting the users to subscribe to channels on remote instance without the consent of the instance admins to peer with the remote instance; the current system makes finding and following people on PeerTube tedious.

clement,
@clement@ck.villisek.fr avatar

@ajnn I think you have a point here. In that case, monetization is a non-problem if PeerTube meets an other demand (here, a different philosophy of video production and consumption).

But I can't help but feel uncomfortable with the philosophy of "free for the consumer", "paid for the videomaker", as it somewhat reduces the potential freedom of creation for those who would like to make content but couldn't afford the costs of sharing it on PeerTube. But I understand and agree to all the other arguments in favour of PeerTube over YouTube; and as I said I understand PeerTube meets the needs of some people who aren't satisfied by YouTube, and that's cool for them.

So we're more in a "two problems, each of them as their solution". Talking about a "switch" to PeerTube would be irrelevant, then, wouldn't it? 🙂

@ajnn

" It’s a tool, right? Sometimes it’s the right tool for the job and sometimes it isn’t."

Exactly what I wanted to say, but your choice of words is better than mine 😄> "Which of course has the potential for a socioeconomic dilemma: If you can't – for example – swear on YouTube (for free), but you can on PeerTube (might need money), then there’s a risk that ultimately only the rich can afford to swear in online videos. 😐"

Well, maybe a bit far-fetched but you are totally right. Thankfully Elon is here to let everyone have some freedom on a platform. 🤡

On a lighter note, why I really like watching some content on PeerTube is the "back to basics" vibe it has. It really reminds me of the pre-2013/2014 YouTube, with very small channels with creative content that can be found easily, not buried under a shedload of nearly identical clickbait content... 😁

Hello !
J'ai rejoint une instance Lemmy publique en parallèle de mon instance Iceshrimp personnelle. Pour deux raisons :

  • L'interface est plus adaptée pour suivre un grand nombre de communautés
  • lemmy.world pose quelques problèmes (impossible de récupérer certaines publications/commentaires depuis Iceshrimp)
    Voici donc mon compte Lemmy: @villisek :-)

Hello!
I joined a public Lemmy instance in parallel of my personal Iceshrimp instance. For two reasons:

  • The UI fits better for following content from several communities.
  • lemmy.world makes some trouble, as I can't retrieve some posts or comments from my Iceshrimp instance.
    So here's my Lemmy account: @villisek :-)
