Hi, I’m Gregor Niehl, a tech enthusiast from Germany born in 2007. I am generally interested in all things #Linux and #OpenSource.

I write apps for the #GNOME desktop, and am part of the GNOME Foundation and the GNOME Circle Committee.

I just got notified that one of my contacts was now on , and now, after having met them half a year ago and never talked to them since then, we're having a 1.5 hour chat

My first pull request to #Workbench project (the #GTK and #GNOME one) got merged yesterday.

I ported one of the demos, titled "View Switcher" to python which demonstrated how to use a Adw.ViewSwitcher (from #libadwaita) using python and deleting certain elements from a Gtk.ListBox according to a button press.

Looking forward to learn #Vala language and maybe contribute to Vala ports or maybe write new demos in python?

@hemish I always enjoy seeing Python getting adopted in apps that enable learning GTK! It greatly lowers that barrier of entry to GNOME app development.

I created a package enabling easy-to-use, safe and cross-platform localization. It converts a special YML syntax into Swift enums.

https://github.com/AparokshaUI/Localized

In the picture, you can see a app created with Adwaita for Swift, localized using the new package. Check out the code here:

@david_swift Will it support a gettext-like file structure? That would enable it to be used in a GNOME Builder template.

So, a while back, I asked you to recommend your favorite command line utilities.
I got 187 answers, with 3 recommendations for almost each of them, and I sifted through these to land on 12 picks that I either started using myself, or that I felt would be very useful!

So, here are 12 terminal apps and utilities that you recommended:

@thelinuxEXP Nice, those all look really cool! I'll definitely be trying out all of them ✨

@david_swift Interesting! I didn't know the API design of a single package could make such a difference!

In fairness to OpenSUSE, this was the only crashed display on the tram (all the others were still working), and it's the first time I've seen something like this happened.

🎉️ The Freedesktop SDK Extension for 5 is now on @flathub, simplifying publishing apps written in Swift on Linux!

https://github.com/flathub/org.freedesktop.Sdk.Extension.swift5

While installing the extension (from the command line) works as expected, it somehow isn't discoverable on the Flathub website (and also Software). It should be here:
https://flathub.org/apps/org.freedesktop.Sdk.Extension.swift5
Any ideas on why that's the case?

gregorni,
@gregorni@fosstodon.org avatar

@david_swift @flathub SDK Extensions aren't listed, that's on purpose. They're not really a user-facing app, but more a developer tool, so they're hidden from the main apps catalogue.

gregorni,
@gregorni@fosstodon.org avatar

@david_swift @flathub Also great that the extension is now in place! 🎉 I love seeing language support for Linux increase, especially for such a popular language such as Swift! Great work! ❤️

Please don't provide an option in your app to switch between light and dark mode. No one wants that. Just use the system preference, there's a reason it's a system preference.

gregorni,
@gregorni@fosstodon.org avatar

@mitsunee Yeah, we all wish we were past that stage already 😔

gregorni,
@gregorni@fosstodon.org avatar

@aatheus But wouldn't it make more sense in that case to fix the issue on the app's side that's causing you to change the theme, rather than adding an option to change the theme?

gregorni,
@gregorni@fosstodon.org avatar

@aatheus * Gregor Niehl thinks one should just fix the problem instead of adding a potential workaround in form of a setting.

gregorni,
@gregorni@fosstodon.org avatar

@pietrodc0 That sounds to me like the actual problem is the contrast in JetBrain's light mode. That's where accessibility needs to be improved.

gregorni,
@gregorni@fosstodon.org avatar

@cero Why would the user need to swap between them?

gregorni,
@gregorni@fosstodon.org avatar

@cero Well, changing theme depending on the time of day could be done on a system-wide level, couldn't it?

Also, it does require maintenance. All code requires maintenance.
