The 13” iPad Air review units that Apple sent out are $1,700+ if you price them up 😅

cmaciasjimenez,
@cmaciasjimenez@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith you better not say the euro price😔

Vision Pro is going to be an even harder sell now that iPad is two CPU generations ahead of it. You just know too that, like every single first-gen Apple product, it's going to be left behind by OS updates way sooner than you'd hope 😔

cmaciasjimenez,
@cmaciasjimenez@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I didn’t even think about that. It’s gonna be rough seeing how good M4 looks😐

A 13-inch iPad Pro fully kitted out with nano texture glass, cellular, keyboard and Pencil Pro is €3,717, if you're keeping track.

(Or about twice the price of a base model PowerMac G5, twenty years ago)

(…the G5 could export Final Cut projects in the background)

@stroughtonsmith literally thought of you because you’ve posted before about these insane iPad prices in Europe. OLED wont make me spend 1200+€ without meaningful software improvements.

I guess I’ll continue to rock my perfectly capable (and loved) 11inch 2018 iPad Pro

Final Cut Pro, Logic and Xcode were the ‘pro apps’ of the Mac era, but the pro apps of the iPad are tools like Procreate. Though iPad has moved towards the Mac over time, it's unlikely to replace it. Traditionally, Apple hasn’t really provided a whole lot of dedicated APIs a high-end illustration app could take advantage of; perhaps that is one of the axes of progression Apple could double down on, and maybe a new first-party AI-enhanced, layered, pro drawing app would make sense for dogfooding?

cmaciasjimenez,

@stroughtonsmith they’ll announce a couple of neat features and updates for their “Pro” apps and leave them unattended for two or three years. Then the cycle will start once again

The EU/DMA version of AltStore looks hawt. Spent the day with @rileytestut and @shanegillio, and it’s wild just how much they have ready to go (pending Apple final approval), before any of the other alternative marketplaces, and with exciting new monetization models too ✌️ I don’t think Apple is at all prepared for the kind of positive disruption new App Stores will bring

Also in the works are new iPad Airs and 15-inch MacBook Air with M3 and a slew of new iPad accessories. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-01-28/apple-eu-changes-sideloading-third-party-app-stores-are-future-of-the-iphone-lrxjzbg6

I honestly hope to see Steam on iOS, with cross-buy, cross-save, and cross-compatibility. We could theoretically see something like Steam's Proton layer add automatic game compatibility with the platform.

Or something like Setapp, with subscription access to bundles of apps.

Alternate app stores aren't simply a bad thing.

Even with a new industrial design, I'm just not excited at all by the prospect of paying two grand to get a new iPad Pro, keyboard and stylus just to run the same software it does today. The software roadmap just seems so out of alignment with what I want from an iPad that it's becoming hard to motivate myself to invest in building for it.

Unsurprisingly, paying $4000+ to run the exact same apps on a face computer, with a two-hour battery and crummy input, is even less appealing 😔

cmaciasjimenez,
@cmaciasjimenez@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I’m still using my 11inch 2018 Pro everyday and love it. Wouldn’t update to have basically the same experience in a nicer screen (to me the one it has it’s more than enough) for +1000€. Not worth it. And I would probably buy a cheap Air model to replace it if it breaks because it runs basically the same software. They really need to step up what it can do to make me want to spend big money

@michaelsteeber thank you for answering. That’s exactly why I was asking I’ve seen some magsafe docks in this new “StandBy wave” of devices but I don’t find any that looks as nice and premium as the apple ones from the stores with the steel arm and white metal base without plastic and logos but I don’t find any. The closest I’ve seen is the ones from Nomad. I guess I’ll keep searching. Thanks

The real tragedy of iPad is the vast gulf between how much potential it had as a platform, and Apple's disinterest in letting it live up to that. It is easy to imagine an alternate universe where iPad grew up to outright replace desktop computing, in all shapes and sizes, running powerful, complex software good enough to supplant everything we used a Mac for. A modern do-over of the entire personal computing industry. Nobody looks at iPhone and thinks 'oh this could be so much more’, but iPad?

cmaciasjimenez,
@cmaciasjimenez@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith if it was open, free of the App Store, this could happen. So many types of apps and services that aren’t developed because Apple wouldn’t let them exist

cmaciasjimenez,
@cmaciasjimenez@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I completely agree and everybody seems to ignore this. We all love our expensive toys (iPad included at least for myself) but there is no way they truly can replace my mac for real world, computing and development. As you say, it really feels that VisionOS is going in the same path

Debating picking up a 2019 27" iMac with a high end config at a cheap price. I kind of want to experience working with a true 2x desktop display and figure that its got at least 2 years left of OS updates. But then I look at the benchmarks vs a simple M1 mini…

@paul the Studio Display is the first time I splurged for a nice monitor and I love the fact that I can just swap my mac for whichever I want and keep my nice display for years to come. I hate the thought of being stuck with the guts of the iMac but not being able to use the screen

…on better hardware 🙁

I'll punt it for now (have way too many other things to play and not enough time), but I really hope Nintendo starts talking about a Switch successor in the next year or so. I've seen far too much of Breath of the Wild at a gorgeous 4K60 in emulators to go back to the real thing in 2023
