It took me so long to realize what the phrase "to have your cake and eat it too" means. Because the idea of having a cake and then eating it is not a luxury.

I'm having a problem with 10 minute long SQLite queries after rebooting the operating system, but then it gets fast after everything is loaded the first time. Rebooting the application is also fine, just not the OS.

curtis,
@curtis@social.teci.world avatar

@alex https://sqlite-users.sqlite.narkive.com/rUeC9GQR/slow-query-after-reboot

To speedup the initial access, you can:

  • read the entire file once before you start your query
  • run the following query (once) select count(last_column) from big_table; this will touch each record in a kind of optimal order

Once again I feel the need to write specifically to those who are still being led into muddled thinking by the various anti constitutionalist fables such as devolution, law of war, etc., but also to Patriots in general.

I am amazed to see that people like Jon Herold and Derek Johnson are still able to command an audience when we have had over three years of shared experience that pretty much utterly destroyed their cherry-picked and laboriously assembled narratives.

@Andre Nice writeup. Saw part of this posted on Telegram also, with the Misfit Media account, so I’m copying my Telegram response here.

My theory can accommodate both points of view without needing to call Jon Herold a grifter or a liar. The only thing I could hold against him is using the name Patel in his anon handle and saying he didn’t know about Q when he formulated his theory.

Whatever is causing all of the absurd boomerangs and institutional self-harm is a very powerful consolidation of power. So be it. It is already here.

The only thing we can do is to keep adjusting the odds of that power being released back to us after Trump takes office. We will know when it happens.

I currently put the odds of an orderly return of power in the 95+% range.

curtis,
@curtis@social.teci.world avatar

@Andre I seem to be in a minority position on that level of optimism

@wjmaggos @Meachamus_Prime @Zennagain The world can currently be explained in several different ways.

That condition helps to cause polarization. Polarization gets people involved in politics and promotes conversation.

Conversation can help identify solutions.

Complacency is definitely declining, and the future continues to look positive, long-term.

Google Captcha is dystopian. It's genuinely dehumanizing. I can't tell you the number of captchas I've failed in the past few days. A robot would have an easier time solving it.

I need to know what's up with Gab (Torba's site).

I mean what have they done technologically to screw either themselves or their users over the last few years.

It's for an up coming piece so any direction or links would be appreciated!

curtis,
@curtis@social.teci.world avatar

@gabriel @realcaseyrollins Gab has made many mistakes as well as having many successes.

I am a proponent of free speech to make it easier for the people to try to moderate bad government. Gab helps to fit that objective, as does the Fediverse.

Gab recently caused a mini exodus by no longer allowing the posting of media unless you have a subscribed account. It is too early to tell how that affects Gab long-term, but I have noticed that their monthly operating costs are being met more easily now.

The activity in the Gab group that I manage has seen a decrease in activity since the new policy was implemented.

Many Gab users like to maintain an anonymous presence and felt threatened both by the loss of anonymity and the semi-paywall.

I operate non-anonymously and was a Pro member, so I continue to operate normally.

I did help to pile on Torba when the policy was announced because I thought it was a bad business decision.

Whether Gab lives or dies is up to them, but I continue to state that we need as many free speech platforms as possible.

This is the problem with both socialism and capitalism. People think if you're against one you have to be for the other. Nobody likes to hear it, but the truth is that both are fatally flawed because even the smartest humans are idiots. This is why chickens should be allowed to vote.

The world is divided. People are at war. Americans can't agree on what's important.

That's why I'm proud to announce I'm running for President of the United States in 2024! 🇺🇸 🦅 🎆

I will heal the divide. Here's how.

My platform is simple. I believe what America needs is exactly one thing. END DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME.

Guns. Immigration. Abortion. Taxes. These are things people vehemently disagree on. Who is right or wrong, I don't care. I want to do one thing. TO END DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME.

Year after year. Hour after hour. The world continues on. The vast majority of people believe daylight savings time is a bad thing. And yet NOTHING HAPPENS.

What is the point of politicians? What is the point of the entire system? If even when we overwhelmingly AGREE on an issue, nothing is done about it?

The government could actually help here. But they can't even do the MOST BASIC thing. They have tried numerous times and failed.

This to me is the greatest failure of our great nation. And I am going to drain the swamp. I am going to MAKE THE GOVERNMENT DO THE MOST BASIC THINGS AGAIN (that's my campaign slogan).

Remember, a vote for Alex Gleason is a vote AGAINST daylight savings time.

Nostr crypto idea: HD chains

Accounts could prove that they were generated by another account.

This could be useful for eg verifying that ActivityPub users bridged to Nostr have been generated by the Mostr Bridge. (Currently NIP-05 is used as proof.)

To do it, we'd generate a master keypair for the bridge. To get the pubkey for an ActivityPub user, we'd sha256 the user's ActivityPub ID, and use that as the chain code in an HD wallet of the master pubkey, then derive index 0.

Bridged accounts would include a "custody" tag, like: ["custody", <master-pubkey>, <chain-code>, <index>]

Clients could verify it by initializing an HD wallet with the chain code, and then deriving the index. If it matches the current event's pubkey, and the event's signature is valid, it proves the account was generated by the master account.

For it to be useful, though, the master pubkey would already have to be trusted by some metric. Either because it's followed, or labeled by a different trusted pubkey somehow, or something else like that.

It could be used for more than just bridged accounts. It could be used for account recover purposes, and more.
