I completed the writings on my six-day Suzume pilgrimage from last December. This time it was mainly locations from around Kobe and a bit of Tokyo as a side dish.

Interested in going to Hokkaido for "Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!"?

I haven't been to Kitami, since it's ridiculously out of the way.

@anianimalsmoe Same as you. I was at the cafe at least two times, might have even snapped a photo, but not documented.

It is also the work place of Tenki no Ko's heroine.

re: seichi junrei

I had a chance to talk to a fellow location scouter today, who also lamented the fact that the pilgrimage thing is super niche. Anime pilgrimages are one of those activities that should be a must of every anime fan when visiting Japan. Because you know, pilgrimages are like Disneyland, but for anime.

The reality is that oftentimes fans visit Japan for Japan. This makes some sense. But what doesn't make sense is the abysmal size of the English speaking pilgrimage community, which is concentrated into followings of a few small social media accounts. It didn't seem to scale up, even though I was sure it would be able to.

It honestly feels like a bad prank committed by a higher power. You finally find that one special hobby, which seems fairly popular within Japan, but then you find you can't share it with anybody.

@anianimalsmoe Obviously crimes are bad. I also agree about schools. Those are sensitive locations. However public holidays or weekends are okay to visit those, I think.

But I also think we tend to self-regulate too much. In general, taking photos of public places is perfectly okay. Yes, we are guests in the communities we visit, at the same time as tourists we have certain rights granted to us by our visas or citizenships.

Again, I don't think the locals are bothered as much as we think. But if they happen to be bothered by peaceful people taking photos in public, that is their problem. Again, I never had issues personally, so saying they harbor discontent might be unfair to them.

Truck-kun scene in real life, location Suginami ward, Tokyo.

This is going on my itinerary. I went to visit several such throwaway scenes in the past, this seems right up my alley.

Also the angle from episode 2.

Interesting, the Truck-kun location is not that far away from Studio Bind's business address, both located in Suginami.

cythie,
@cythie@sakurajima.moe avatar

One could say they picked that specific street crossing because it's near one of the closest junior high schools in Studio Bind's neighborhood ..

My Japan trip is locked in for late November. Two weeks in Tokyo, enjoying the salaryman lifestyle, then a week of vacation somewhere yet to be determined.

My interests are all over the place these days, it will be hard to decide on the theme of the last week. I don't have a single thing I want to be doing, like anime pilgrimages on my previous trips.

cythie,
@cythie@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe Damn that's sad. But it's not a bad idea to visit the same places and see how they have changed. I did that for my Onegai Twins pilgrimage (I visited twice). You see the same tree from the series grow old, lake fences going into decay, but some things stay the same, some transform ...

Yes, the food is amazing, that alone will be worth the trip.

Disco Elysium is not an isekai but in many ways functions like it. Harry brings an incredible set of detective skills with him from before his retrograde amnesia. His memories don't really return, his past life is behind him and he can become whoever he wants (or so it seems). However, if they did return, the "jump" would have been nullified.

All in all, amnesia done right as a plot device is fantastic.

Got myself a PC for the living room to use for VR gaming, hosting dedicated servers sometimes and as a PC console

I feel bad for buying it, any ideas on more ways I could use it so that I feel less guilty?

cythie,

@maadsharp I bought a RTX 4090 for work related deep learning research ... Yeah.

Basically, people have needs. It's fine.

Dismal Dismal Dismal

This season's anime offerings are dismal. Time to work on the backlog of things I should have watched but didn't and finish things I started and got distracted. Probably also watch KON! it been a while.
