Just wasted a bunch of time fighting with a TrueNAS scale bug where the pod didn't actually stop, and now I have an unmanaged NextCloud service running that I can't stop. :ablobcatnodmeltcry:

Most of the parts, at least the BlueSCSI, AAUI adapter (so I can connect it to the network), and a Sonnet Crescendo G3 accelerator because why not?

I probably going to need some gorilla glue or ABS cement just in case if any plastic parts.. and should be able to inspect the machine.

Should be fun, at the very least, although I am going to need to drop down the motherboard so I can take out the battery and do some upgrades.

@yon, did you deal with brittle plastics on vintage Macs before (I did at least with the 630CD)

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon I spent about 8 years on Wintel when I was on Mac during my childhood. Never again. I went back to Mac in 2006, although I wanted to go back in 2004.

The Dell Dimension 8400 is not a great desktop, but it’s the desktop I tried installing Gentoo Linuc in a virtual machine, and actually got it working.

From this video, he used plumbing cement.

@yon Should speed up 68k emulation as apparently, it’s pretty slow on the 601, but not as bad as the 603 on a Performa 6200. I kind of wish I went for a better one but my child self is, well don’t know much about computers. The Peforma 6200 was a slow computer and not even worth restoring although I won’t throw it away ever.

The good thing is, with the accelerator, it still supports System 7.

chikorita157,

@yon Did you ever try emulating an amiga on a MiSTER and then use Sheepshaver on it? How is it?

@yon Some good news, I got a USB switch to switch between the MDD G4, the PM 8100 and my custom Pentium III All going to use the Dell Ultrasharp U2415 monitor using a more modern Apple Keyboard.

I have an ADB keyboard, the Apple Keyboard II but that is nothing special.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon It’s on one corner of the desk in my bedroom. The plan is to use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I don’t use CRTs anymore as I don’t have the space. With the USB switcher, I can switch up to four computers.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon You can't do a KVM like setup on a C64 (I don't know since I don’t own one. Probably the oldest computer I used besides an old IBM XT my parents have is an Apple II in 2nd grade at the private school I went to, but most of my childhood is usning Mac and Wintel (ewww)

I wonder if this is a trend towards streaming and less on physical DVD/Bluray sales.

Not sure how the streaming situation is in Japan in regards to Anime. I wonder if there is more insight of how this might affect home video sales.

chikorita157, to windows
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

This is what true enshittification of Windows 11 is, unless you pirate the enterprise version.

This really shows that we need more competition. Linux is not seen as an alternative given the lack of commercial software support (e.g. lack of Adobe apps, which is used in the creative industry, etc, along with apps that only work on Windows and/or Mac).

This is why I use a Mac instead of Windows, because I don't like Windows, but I have a laptop that runs Windows to run a few apps that are Windows only. But only having two viable choices isn’t that great, likewise with iOS and Android.

If only BeOS, OS/2, etc. was still a thing, maybe it wouldn't be this bad.

Also, Windows 7 was the last “good" Windows OS until it basically turned to crap.

@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe You know how I feel about Electron. It's garbage as it eats up memory just for a relatively simple app, and basically just a web browser.

QT is also a cross platform framework that allows people to create apps for multiple platforms, but of course that mostly relies on C++.There are bindings that allow you to develop using different languages.

Of course web apps has make it easier to switch to other operating systems. However, specialized apps like photo and video editors like Photoshop, which of course has a lot of legacy code, thus people are stuck with using either Windows or Mac.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon The problem is, the FOSS solutions are not as developed or have a poor UX that can turn normal users off, even if they look for an alternative. The GNU Image Manipulation Program is one of the examples being very hard to use because of the poor UX, and cause people to become disappointed since it's harder to use than Photoshop, and just go back to using Photoshop.

I do think having an option to use commercial software is the only way to make Linux viable. Otherwise, it will just be another niche OS that most consumers won't consider unless they are willing to spend the time to make it work.

Also, the UX leaves a lot to be desired too, which doesn't make matters any better. For instance, if I see Gnome 3 desktop, I would be turned off since it seems unintuitive to use. They also need to improve the UX as well if they want better adoption.

@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

I finally got the Power Macintosh 8100 and it's apparently its the more expensive 100/AV model, which allows you to connect to S-Video and input/output RCA Audio. _The computer is surprisingly in good condition and I didn’t pay too much for it (around $100 not including shipping). The only thing is the CD cover is loose, but I can probably 3D print a new one or if the plastic bits might be in the computer, glue it back.

I still need to open it up to remove the battery.

Can't do much with it since I don't have the BlueSCSI yet and I don't have any blank CD-Rs to reinstall the OS.

Need to get an AAUI Ethernet adapter and a few more things to make it operational.

CC: @yon

Back of the Power Macintosh 8100
Power Macintosh 8100/100AV tower. The CD panel is taped since it’s loose.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon Unfortinately, I have no retro consoles to hook to it. I also broke my system folder on my external HD, so I can't see what I fully have, although it has 80 MB of RAM, which is a lot more than what I had on the Performa 6200 (yes, it was a really slow and bad) I had during my childhood. It's a given that it will outperform it despite being a PowerPC 601

I may just take the RAM from the 6200, so I can have 112 MB of total memory, given if there are still free memory slots. The 6200 is worthless anyway.

@Linux @yon Running old games, that is what I plan to use it for.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon @Linux I think there is a good number on Macintosh Garden. Also, Bandai Pippin (Apple’s failed game console) games will work on a PowerPC Mac since it's basically a stripped down Mac that can run games, exclusively.

After watching the second episode of Sasayaku You ni Koi o Utau, Yori and Himari is just a cute pairing and I can't help to think how adorable Yori’s reaction when it comes to Himari.

Of course, the review will come in a few hours, I just wrote it. Need to also write Yoru no Kurage as well.
