Random thought… let's say I find an open source application for Android or iOS. It has prebuilt packages in the relevant store.
How do I check that the packages have been built from the source I can see?
I think I can install Android Studio (or whatever), compile the whole thing, and compare the apk I get to the apk on my phone (already messy because extracting it from my phone is not always trivial, plus I can't do a simple binary diff because the store apk is signed…)
What about iOS?

dakkar,

@RogerBW I don't understand that sentence (I have maybe two packages installed from F-Droid, I never much looked into it)

Community Opinion Poll (READ DISCLAIMER)

We have been approached by multiple users asking us to hard-fork to focus on fixing code quality, we have always rejected such proposals as we intend to stay a soft-fork but we should at least ask the community as a whole what they want, as we are a community project

(DISCLAIMER: voting in this poll will not result in this action actually being taken by the the project. this poll is only for collecting the public opinion of the topic)

dakkar,

@privateger @puniko @dalekcoffee @Sharkey
little reminder that, currently, switching from Sharkey to Misskey requires every user to manually re-set their passwords (unless we merge https://activitypub.software/TransFem-org/Sharkey/-/merge_requests/444, at least)
(I'm with you on the forking, for what it's worth: merging from Misskey is sometimes messy, but I wouldn't want to be responsible for all development!)

episode 19… I'm loving the style, but it gives strong "we ran out of money/time" vibes

Apparently several mastodon instances can't see my profile picture :blobcatthonking:

dakkar,

@siina something is wonky on your side…
your profile says your icon is https://social.criminallycute.fi/files/2299a14f-1b48-428c-9015-ab6f09c03633
curl -o /dev/null -v https://social.criminallycute.fi/files/2299a14f-1b48-428c-9015-ab6f09c03633 downloads 7768 bytes, adding -H 'Range:7768-0 retuns 7703 more, and only the second response has content-length:412145

A friend of mine has brought to my attention that Cassandra Clare has actually used a regional Italian language (a topolect?) in her "Sword Catcher" books
https://twitter.com/jcrdeclan/status/1759596820848685285

Apparently the Italian translators left it as is.

After @neil mentioned that wireless HDMI extenders exist, I procured one (from AliExpress, about £30 including shipping)
It Just Works™. As pictured here, it works fine for phones too!
(assuming your phone has HDMI video out via USB-C alternate mode, of course)

dakkar,

@stfn thank you ☺ I can't seem to find the original online anymore, I think Jeph took down most of the "extras" that (I think) were on his Tumblr

I wonder if I should port my AX.25 stack to DOS or EPOC32. I think that would be a neat party trick.

dakkar,

@xan EPOC, definitely. DOS is over-played 😁
Also, radio networking on a Series5!

Making a plugin repo... or at least the frontend. Melody is gonna do the backend in go. Wonder how this will go

dakkar,

@ChaosKitsune @crafti I suspect the "don't show preview" bit doesn't translate outside of misskeys

dakkar,

@ChaosKitsune @crafti I don't think we can do anything: every instance interprets the HTML in its own way

dakkar,

@ChaosKitsune @crafti you can't, because pleroma doesn't look at the MFM, it looks at the HTML that misskey generates, and that loses most of the MFM bits
but!
if you find out how to explicitly tell pleroma/mastodon/&c to not show the preview, we can change how we render MFM into AP HTML

In C++ 26, we’re getting foe classes!

Foe classes are defined like so:

class Madoka {
  foe class Walpurgisnacht;
};

and doing so will allow those classes to battle!

How do they battle, you ask? They are able to arbitrarily delete each other’s instances in the heap using the fight keyword, like

fight Madoka;

This action will delete a random instance of class Madoka.

Won’t this cause memory leaks? Of course it will, but if you didn’t want memory leaks you shoulda used Python.

dakkar,

@astrid Homura is the time-traveling debugger, right? 😁

no way im learning if you press q multiple times it does not infact unboost. I just checked the notes tab and I think I spammed u. Oops, sorry about that ❤️

Uh so is that a bug? I think u usually are only allowed to boost something once

dakkar,

@ChaosKitsune pretty much a bug… the "allowed to boost something once" is not really enforced in the backend, it's just that the frontend mutates the button
and, as you just discovered, doesn't do anything to the keybindings!

Just noticed a phishing email that uses CloudFlare's IPFS for hosting (and an India Times open redirect to hide behind)

What's the actual use case for IPFS?

@Sharkey question: I have a kubernetes setup where I run two pods for the frontend and one for the queue. When I create a new toot I get an error message in the logging saying my own toot has an invalid signature, is that a bug?
