catherine is an object that will talk about your c++ compiler the way intel security advisories talk about sequences of events in complex microarchitectural conditions

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

don't worry; under the conditions of my agreements, i'm allowed a single standard-issue c++ compiler for home use at least through FY 2025

the thermostat in this place is wireless and talks to the boiler over radio... but something happened (?) and it's no longer working. and i noticed that i'm cold.

fortunately i had a recording of the thermostat's boiler-on and boiler-off commands on my flipper zero.

so now flipper zero is a key part of how i'm going to not freeze to death while asleep

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@gsuberland i think the display might be dead actually

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

why would you reply to this and suggest it could be a dead battery

do you not have a theory of mind at all?

@Elucidating changing the AAs was the first thing i did, for obvious reasons!

i'm normal and can be trusted with using your programming language.

i promise :)

i just produced an object file with a 122 KB long basic block. how's your day going?

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

i just used some template crimes to work around an issue where the C++ compiler, in certain specific conditions, would allocate several dozen kilobytes of distinct stack slots to store constant zeroes in them to pass as an argument, potentially contributing to stack overflow in worst-case stack usage scenario

how's your day going?

i spent at least six hours optimizing this single function. i haven't actually ran the code for the most part. i was looking at it in the disassembler. i just verified that it actually computes the right result before sending the pull request

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@forgetful_bri i'm uhhhhh,,,, mostly computing pure functions?

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@forgetful_bri there are intermediate steps involved

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@forgetful_bri yeah, real-world functions aren't actually pure i think

at the very least they take time

Can you answer this simple question about the C programming language?

$ cat test.c
<string.h>
<stdio.h>
int main() { printf("%d\n", strlen("\x01c")); }
$ cc test.c && ./a.out

What number does this program print?

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@typeswitch you're welcome / i'm so sorry

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@tnt the C syntax highlighter in VS Code doesn't know this

whitequark, (edited )
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

Answer: \x01c is an escape sequence that translates to a single character. Any amount of hexadecimal digits after \x designate a single character.

Fully half of the respondents do not know this! It's a really interesting result to me; nearly every C programmer has used this escape sequence at some point, and yet. Even some really experienced people (40+ years of C, in one case!) have been tripped up by this.

If I ever need to complete a technical interview I'm going to ask the interviewer this question and see what the outcome is.

@artemesia after the backslash or after backslash followed by lowercase latin letter ex?

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@artemesia what does it do if you go for \x00000001c?

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@artemesia yep, so as you can see it's not limited to 3 digits

2008, me: I love the idea of cryptocurrency

BITCOIN: The word "cryptocurrency" now means "financial scams based on inefficient write-only ledgers"

2018, me: I love the idea of the metaverse

FACEBOOK: The word "metaverse" now means "proprietary 3D chat programs with no soul"

2022, me: I love the idea of procedurally generated content

OPENAI: From now on people will associate that only with big corporations plagiarizing small artists and turning their work into ugly content slurry

@mcc I like that it 'breaks' copyleft because depending on cops to create a social good was always a losing proposition. The only question was to when, and now is as good a time as any.
