First day back in the office after vacation. I've left headphones and all my aeropress filters at home, so I'm off to a good start(!)

So few people come into the office on a Friday that Friday work has a very different vibe.

I think I kind of like it though... it's a quieter and maybe more focused end to the week.

@sldrant I worked in a mostly-remote working-from-home team last year, and I found it so isolating and depressing. Part of the reason I joined my current team was that almost all of them are in the office most days.
This might be the exception more than the norm nowadays though!

anyone I know thinking about going to this year?

@Edent hope you make it this year! I remember only seeing you on a big screen last time 😢

In London - drove G to her new uni house, with a (packed!) car load of her stuff. Strange feels! 🥹

Finally got around to watching "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and inflicted it on Amy and Grace.

I loved it, but I perhaps didn't prepare them for how weird it was gonna be

@sldrant aww... I haven't seen that in years - that was an amazing movie

I've got the office to myself today.... it's giving me creepy Twilight Zone-y vibes

Dinner in a motor museum for the second time in six months… apparently eating near to old cars is a thing I do now 🤔

I love that I can check when the last time was without having to resort to the bird site.

Trying a beekeeper experience day. It was fascinating - but photos don’t capture the stuff-of-nightmares sound of the bees!

The hive!

never played a Fallout game before, but curious to see what everyone is talking about since the Amazon show

signed up to Game Pass for a month to give Fallout 4 a try

a couple of hours in... not sure I'm getting it yet, but I'll give it a little longer

This won't mean much to people who aren't immersed in IBM's variety of alphabet soup, but I got some good news this week - I’m now an STSM.

To translate, basically it's a promotion.

I did try googling to see if there was a definition I could point at, but the closest I can find is https://michaelrowe01.com/index.php/uncategorized/what-is-a-senior-technical-staff-member/ from @michaelrowe01

Let's just say I'm very pleased and leave it at that 🤷‍♂️

Finally got around to finishing Crysis 2.

That was a lot of fun - the physics engine and so much of the map being destructible opened up so much creativity in how to complete levels… and options for amusing myself with ways to blow stuff up 😆

Arriving at work late today after needing to make a detour on my usual walk… because I don’t know how to say “excuse me” in cow

Many cows, right in front of the gate I normally walk through

Loving what I’m now thinking of as our new office pet: a pigeon that has started building a nest on the ledge next to my desk

In her new nest. I say “nest”. Small pile of twigs really.

Purely anec-data from the talks I happen to have gone to, but I feel like there has been a shift in presenters starting by sharing their twitter handles

Fewer are doing it than previous years, and the ones that do tend to justify/excuse/apologise-for it!

The amount of damage that has been done to Twitter in such a short time is so sad to see

😢

The wallpaper in the office here is a list of patents - with the patent number, title, and inventors names.

I’ve been looking to see if I can spot where it repeats, but so far can’t find it!

I think at this point, we can officially call it a habit

I finished a new feature on #MLforKids this week - adding an option for students to store their own training data, instead of on my servers.

I try and develop the site in the open, so here's another #devlog update on the thinking that went behind this feature.

I found this story fascinating. The usage of AI in education is always interesting, but it's not the AI aspect that jumped out at me.

A math curriculum taught through playing the piano is a fascinating idea.

I love (and can totally believe) that the use of music can make measurable benefits to student outcomes in maths.

This looks intriguing - it's sort of like (and also from MIT), but reimagined for a world of mobile apps.
