FTA:

According to StatCounter, a web analytics company, by June 2023, Linux has reached a 3% market share in the desktop segment. This is a remarkable achievement considering its fierce competition from other operating systems.

some people are still used to reddit days, when there was someone from blizzard in the forums who could (theoretically) see the message and (theoretically) do something about it

I use a PS2 dualshock controller, bought a USB adaptor years ago. I’ve been gaming since the Atari times and in my opinion this was the best controller ever made.

One must be really far from linux to choose oracle linux among hundreds of available distros

Not really a choice when the products they sell (their database/cloud solutions) are tied to it or RHEL. But yeah, I doubt there’s many who’d call it their favorite distro

It just looks like GNOME2, lol.

even if the glorified rootkit denuvo puts out had 0% impact on game performance it still would be “evil” as it mere existence broadens surface area for potential attacks on your system

don’t know about you folks but this sounded so arrogant to me:

There was a time when users of Facebook and users of Google Talk were able to chat with each other and with people from self-hosted XMPP servers, before each platform was locked down into the silos we know today. What would stop that from repeating? Well, even if Threads abandoned ActivityPub down the line, where we would end up is exactly where we are now. XMPP did not exist on its own outside of nerd circles, while ActivityPub enjoys the support and brand recognition of Mastodon.

I have a simple definition, hardware is retro if it’s no longer being produced, software is retro if it’s no longer beind sold

EDIT: posting this here because I can’t seem to respond to a kbin user below, the message never goes through:

A digital re-release is different from the original release, in my opinion. For example, Full Throttle is on steam but I had the original one, which came in a box. You can even download the CD-ROM ISO somewhere, but you can’t find that box with the CD-ROM anymore (unless you buy it secondhand from someone).

Digital releases muddies the water somewhat. But, as far as I know, Nintendo doesn’t issue the original NES cartridge anymore – so it’s still retro for me

What’s left of my childhood NES games (i.imgur.com)

Not pictured: Bible Adventures. I know I had more but I must have traded some in. I for sure had Jaws and Jack Nicklaus Golf. I replaced the 72 pin connector and she runs perfectly still. I couldn’t believe how spotless it was when I opened it up. Btw, sorry if this is formatted weird. Still trying to get used to Lemmy....

There are legitimate reasons to scan/connect to ports at localhost, the article even lists some (e.g AVs)

I bet this will only apply to indie devs, big corps will get a free pass to plunder whatever they want with their AIs
