iPod management software for linux?

Is there any decent iPod management software for linux available? I have a 6th generation iPod that I use only for music and it’s really the last thing that I keep my windows partition around for. The more I use linux, the more unintuitive iTunes feels. I had tried GTKPod in the past and one other, but they didn’t support...

As others have said there are a couple of options that may or may not work as Apple loves to make sure that their products only work with their software and a lot of them haven’t been updated in years.

For ease of use you can install Rockbox on a good number of iPod devices, that will allow you to drag and drop music onto the device without having to use software to load the music.

If you are wanting an even easier option, you could sell your iPod and get one of the many different Digital audio player options that use microSD cards to store the music files allowing for ease of storage upgrades, ease of moving to a new device and being OS agnostic as they show up as a USB mass storage device.

I use a Fiio M7 as my daily driver with either a set of Jade audio EW1 TWS earphones or FiiO JH3 IEM’s & I have an older Fiio X3 2gen connected up to a dock for playing music in my living room.

How to organize images with custom tags?

Hello! I have a bunch of photos all mixed together, and I’d like to sort them out in order to better find the ones I’m searching for without loosing half an hour. I was thinking of adding custom tags to each image (manually), like “my dog”, “trip to Paris”, “my friend X” etc. I’d like this tag system to be...

I use XnView MP to view and organize my photos.

Fairly certain that you can encode tags into the photo’s metadata.

I use yt-dlg as a GUI for yt-dl.

I find it works pretty well.

Don’t use Gparted unless you know what you are doing as it is relatively easy to screw up.

Gnome disks is a much more user friendly option and you don’t have to mess around with changing permissions as what changes you make in it are owned by the logged in user.

Hey, AA lights aren’t all bad.

A nice light with a Lithium AA or Eneloop NiMH battery if you have access to a charger is (relatively) safe for kids or non enthusiasts to use.

Plus they tend to be very affordable so if they go missing you aren’t out a lot of money.

Sync crashes when logging into secondary app, shows no posts

I’ve been having an issue since the release of the app where the app will crash if I log into a secondary account. If I repoen the app after the crash and it’s logged into that secondary account, posts and comments will not load at all. Android will direct me to clear the cache but the issue still remains. If someone can...

Try clearing the cache.

Fully close the app, then in your phone’s settings> apps> Sync> storage and cache> then press the “clear cache” button.

Have a look at Linux Lite, it might work pretty well on your hardware.

Are there any pitfalls to avoid in buying PCIe/m.2 adapters?

I’m planning on giving an older machine a small upgrade with an SSD, but since that machine does not have an m.2 port, I was thinking about buying the cheapest PCIe adapter I could find. Besides the obvious stuff like ports, PCIe gen and lane count, is there anything I should look out for? Specifically regarding Linux?

He didn’t specify what sort of M.2 SSD he has so I thought that I would throw it out there as an option.

Plus as he said it was for an older computer & was looking for the cheapest adaptor that works, I guessed that he wasn’t too concerned about getting the most performance possible out of the setup.

I have no issues opening the video using Sync

Apparently sheets of paper work as well.

Writing on your phone is fine for structured notes that aren’t going to change much but they really really suck for free form writing.

I use an A5 Leuchtturm1917 Weekly Planner for my work shifts, appointments, reminders, tasks, to do’s, etc. It has blank sections for each day allowing you to format your daily plan how you like and you can cross things out and add to it as needed (really great for paying bills as you can note it down then write “paid” next to it).

While you don’t get audible alerts from it, I have found that after using google calendars for years that 95% of the entries don’t need an audio alert & have the downside of disappearing from your notifications at the end of the scheduled time or day which can be a pain when you want to push a task to the next day. With pen and paper things stay until you mark them as done (and there is many different ways to do that).

I have a couple of A5 ruled notebooks for my lists, longer term to do lists, messages etc. When you cross something out it doesn’t disappear or move to another place in an app, it sits there easily visible for future reference or reminders.

There is certainly something freeing from using physical pen and paper to write how you want and structure your notes how they work for you without having to spread them across multiple apps.

  • Need to make graphs or make plans or maps? Use graph or dot grid paper.
  • Need to write structured notes? Use one of the many lined papers with your preferred line density and spacing.
  • Want to free form your notes &/or draw? Use plain paper or sketch paper.
  • Want to write music? Use paper printed with staff’s.
  • Need to plan your day? Use one of the great many daily, weekly, monthly or yearly planners ranging from structured all the way to free form.
  • Have a need to keep track of “to do’s”? There a great number of pads, notebooks, planners and journals that are all about to do lists (there are even systems that have set ways to mark items as in progress, on hold, completed, etc to make things more consistent).
  • Want to keep a record of books, movies, recipes, plants, travel, babies etc? Guess what, there are journals formatted especially for these. topics

After trying to do 100% of my notes, planning, to do’s, reminders, etc on my phone for over 15 years and having constant issues with notification spam, missed reminders and finding information I have moved back to using planners and notebooks.

They allow me to write how I want, cross things out, add thing in, highlight, draw diagrams, maps, plans etc and most important of all it allows me to make mistakes and correct them.

I have found that I am reaching far less for my phone to look up daily plans & notes as I am remembering them more reliably after writing them down by hand.

I too would like Sync to be able to read & write to the blocked community list on my Lemmy account.

I currently use Connect for Lemmy to do this.

dr_jekell,
@dr_jekell@lemmy.world avatar

Sync for Reddit was a mature app that had plenty of time to be optimised for performance, stability and reduced power usage.

Sync for Lemmy on the other hand while it uses a lot of the same code as its predecessor it’s still less than a month old & still in beta.

It’s going to take time for Lemmy to work out the bugs in their software and for Sync to become as refined as its predecessor.

I just started using Linux... any great tips?

I just installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (Cinnamon) on an empty laptop a couple days ago and have been experimenting a lot. I’m coming from being a Windows user since I was just a little kid playing old DOS games on my grandpa’s Win-98 PC back in around 2000. My daily driver is currently running Windows 10 but I am pretty adamant...

  1. Linux is not Windows

Do not expect things to work as they do in Windows.

  1. The terminal is not to be feared (it only bites when told to)

While you can get most things done via a GUI option using the Terminal is much more powerful and gives more information.

  1. Not all hardware works with or works well with Linux

This pertains mostly to Laptops and peripherals, but always do a quick Google search to check for any issues.

One of the big issues for people is sound, a lot of computer & parts makers like to use the cheapest no-name parts they can because Windows lets them require “drivers” aka software fixes for poor hardware whereas Linux tends to give unaltered output leading to complaints about sound quality.

  1. Not all software works on or works well on Linux

You are not going to find software from Adobe, Microsoft office 365 etc running on Linux even using WINE.

Some games will not work on Linux even using the Proton compatibility software.

  1. Linux software is often lacking in the visuals but has lots of options under the hood.

There is a lot of software made for Linux are made by devs who focus more on the under the hood performance than making the software GUI look pretty. So don’t be put off by the looks of a lot of Linux software.

  1. Alternative to is a great website.

I highly recommend Using the Alternativeto website to (as the name implies) find alternatives to software you use on Windows.

  1. Backup’s are your friend

Setup an external device be it an internal hard drive, external hard drive or NAS as a backup target for your files.

You can use Timeshift to backup the entire drive (and it can reload a chosen backup directly onto the drive), Lucky backup to sync specified folders (either one way or both ways) to your drives or as I do use both.

And backup before doing major updates.

I have Timeshift setup to backup the entire drive (including $home) to a separate internal HDD and Luckybackup set to backup my important folders to an external USB HDD.

  1. Accidents will happen

As you are learning how to use and navigate you will have accidents that will require a full reinstall, don’t fear this has happened to everyone else and why you backup your files so it’s an annoyance instead of the end of the world.
