Hacker News man upset that I suggested thing he doesn’t like might have good ideas.

I like how these LinkedIn folks see a person who has been freelance for more than a year and their first instinct is to send you a note offering you recruiting services.

No, you don’t get it. I want this.

Just hit 5K followers on this not-quite-hellsite. Happy to be here.

Pretty sure #5,000 was @Wraithe.

This Metal Jesus Rocks video starts with Kelsey Lewin pulling out like 30 different random handhelds and then transitions into LGR wearing a Phar-Mor shirt.

It’s basically everything I want in a YouTube video.

How I fixed Google so it doesn’t shove AI into my face anymore.

new @tedium

EDIT: Nobody cares if you use DuckDuckGo, you do you

“It is not Google circa 2001—it is a Google-circa-2001 presentation of Google circa 2024, a very different site.” https://tedium.co/2024/05/17/google-web-search-make-default/

@bitsgalore @tedium Thanks, I’m updating the piece for this very reason, because this ended up popping off right away.

ernie,

@bitsgalore @tedium Just added a section and credited you. Thanks!

ernie,

@peterbutler @tedium that's pretty cool! Given the way Google reshapes our meaning so often on specific searches that can really come in handy!

If you’re going to join a band, join it like Matt Chamberlain did Pearl Jam—only for three weeks, but long enough to appear in the video for their most-famous song, “Alive.”

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

And then leave the band to join the SNL house band.

As the operator of an LLC, I find it very curious when I get an official looking letter telling me to go to some website to do something like renew my annual registration, something that costs $50.

I got a letter today linking to an official-looking website telling me to fill out the registration. The price? $135.

MFers out here charging $85 to be unnecessary middlemen.

Tip: If you want a suck-free Google experience, set this parameter as your default search engine.

https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

By adding udm=14 to any Google URL parameter, it forces Google to present a knowledge-panel-free search.

That means no AI, no gaming the results, and as far as I can tell for now, no ads. It makes a great default search.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@lauren On the other hand, it is the purest form of Google we’ve seen in quite some time. I think power users should have the option to turn off the knowledge panels.

Maybe this isn’t great for normies, but I also think using this sends a message that folks do not want the new changes.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@jhpot It’s a very steal-able story idea, I get it. A s/o would be welcomed, but no worries

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@jhpot Wrote something, feel free to link if you do end up going with it: https://tedium.co/2024/05/17/google-web-search-make-default/

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@Newmy @jhpot Try it in incognito mode. I would be curious if it worked there.

I think Deadspin relaunched. That relaunch appears to be the same wire content as before, except with a whole bunch of gambling ads. https://deadspin.com

@jloc0 I just tried it for Android. It’s wild. It just finds all your MP3s on your phone and plays them

Decided to help out someone in my neighborhood with their computer stuff. And honestly, even though I couldn’t figure everything out, it was kind of a nice feeling.

If anyone knows why a Ring camera can’t get through a firewall, let me know.

@ashleycollinge That’s what it sounds like to me but I don’t think her router password is easily accessible. I wasn’t able to check it when I was there.
