Years ago I saw users talking about joining Discords to share how to make subreddits go viral with inflammatory content. I believe the donald era brought a massive paradigm shift to the site. In other words the user base became that which enjoys edgy posting.
Time to stake a nice beach front property on Hudson’s Bay. It will replace become the new summer destination after Florida has completely submerged to the ocean.
I could see the paradigm shifting over the years on reddit. They don’t approach the internet as a knowledge base but a personal assistant chat. That’s when I knew the value of the site was on the down swing.
How are their internet boards looking? I’ve noticed a kind of weird way to tell what’s going on on the street is to observe actions of the population. Brazil has a very high youth unemployment. Most of the edge lord NEET boards are full of Brazilian kids.
It’s not really a big deal, but I am currently writing this using a linux kernel I compiled from source, which certainly feels like an accomplishment. The Arch Wiki has made the process fairly easy to follow. I just took the stock Arch Linux configuration without changes for now....
It’s been evident big tech wants their own corporate intranet of sorts. Perhaps we’re seeing the beginnings of a great net split. That’s if there’s enough movement to forge on with a free (as in libre) standards regardless of what big tech is doing on their own.

Is one really on the internet if they’re trapped inside a tech bro walled garden. The situation seems quite terrible now that people have to be told how to go to a URL as simple as cbc.ca. It’s not like the internet was recently invented. This is a developed nation and one of the earlier to widely adopt internet usage. Here we are teaching people how to browse to a website. What a mess that big tech has made.
I think they are absolutely 100% getting kickbacks in some forms. Not necessarily monetary. My basis is that years ago when I was very active in my corners of the internet I got tons of stuff just for knowing the right people. I was far from any sort of power mod. Reddit power mod is much higher profile. So there’s no way they aren’t getting benefits.
Another thing is I’ve been on reddit since early on. I lurked a community that was a few hundred subscribers. Today it is over a hundred thousand. I know the familiar usernames and the little cliques of their inner circles. Over the years there have been a few promotional giveaways on the subreddit. Coincidentally the familiar usernames won the prizes. It was rigged. Had to be.
Maybe most reddit mods work for free. The mod of that random little subreddit? Probably working for free. The power users though? There’s no doubt in my mind they’ve been getting compensations. The power users want reddit to continue succeeding to their benefit (whatever it maybe) as much as reddit needs them to keep working.
And since you won’t be able to modify web pages, it will also mean the end of customization, either for looks (ie. DarkReader, Stylus), conveniance (ie. Tampermonkey) or accessibility....

What happened to the ethos of the original internet cultures that were so dominant. It’s like large swaths of that generation grew up and sold out to become the oppressors. And the other portion are being crushed by that system.

Tangentially related. What’s the deal with search engines of online stores. It’s like they aren’t even search engines at all. They’re doing nothing more than showing me products/sellers they want me to buy from. Digikey lets you drill down to precise specification filters. I wish all search engines could be like that.
This country tries to be bigger than it is. On the flip side of the same coin it’s falsely perceived from the outside as bigger than it is. As if to be some sort of alt America. I think California alone is bigger or at least comparable to the entire country across many metrics. There is simply no amount of forcing or wishing or hoping some how this country can manifest the economic and industrial output to magically increase by orders of magnitude. Some times I wish everyone would get real about all this and treat it as it is. A small nation.
The old reddit is dead and gone. They (corporate) know what they’re doing. They’ve pivot to the commercialized internet. The crowd that pays “influencers”, “creators”, or what have you. The crowd that gives money to people who are famous for being famous. The crowd that pays for entries in a database shown as icon badges on their profile.
This is a significant part of the internet and the people on this planet. More importantly they are monetizeable. That’s what reddit is now. The existence of this isn’t what you like but it will continue to exist regardless. There are people on this planet who are into that. That’s what reddit is today. The old reddit is no more.

A while back the conservative party of Canada was caught inserting MGTOW / Ben Shapiro tags on all their Youtube uploads. In other words they were poisoning peoples social graph in order to cause exactly what you’re talking about.
This is why I use a Google account that is only for Youtube entertainment. I keep it on a separate chromium profile. I turn on all the privacy toggles in the Google account. Only Youtube history is turned on. I curate the watch history.
You cannot tell what content might have breadcrumbs that eventually open the floodgates of far right echo chambers. They do this intentionally. So it requires active measures on your part to counter them. You’ve got to manage your account with intention. I do not use that account at all for random browsing. I usually do that in incognito on a different browser.

I think it’s partially attributable to Lemmy phone apps haven’t taken off yet. Phone posting is a different medium than desktop posting with regards to McLuhans “the medium is the message” principle. Phone usage appeals to the lowest common denominator. People use it as a time waste to mindlessly scroll. The cognitive load is much lower. Thus shitty content bubbles to the top because that’s all the brain power people are giving it. Phone usage is not conducive to consuming depth of content nor contributing it.
Additionally I think the lower cognitive engagement tends to lead people into greater fuckwad behavior. You aren’t on a board with human beings on the other side of a keyboard. It’s just a stupid app on your phone.
I think if I’m right then in time Lemmy with death spiral not unlike reddit if phone apps mature and Lemmy apps become a mainstream daily use type of affair. I doubt that will happen without the capitalist engine driving it though.
It’s telling how new the reddit userbase is that they don’t know the histories of it. In for the first part of reddits existence it was full of warts. There was a saying, 402 it went through 404 try once more. Because reddit sucked at submitting comments so you had to keep retrying at times. Down times were so often too.

Very nice. I don't understand the paradigm where everything is spaced out and there's useless sidebars wasting space.
I general why does there have to be static sidebars that are rarely used. It causes the content body to be squeezed into tiny space. I will use the left menus when necessary which is not every single page view. In particular the right panel on lemmy and reddit have become cognitive blindspots. I will read the board description and decide to (or not to) click subscribe once. Otherwise it's like how my brain ignores my own nose.
I haven't used maximized windows since the 4:3 CRT days. Another annoyance arises when windows are tiled horizontally. It becomes an exercise in frustration trying to wiggle the window size until responsive design collapses the sidebar.
Ultimately it it seems desktop has become a second class citizen over mobile.
