tl;dr, water treatment authorities accidentally dumped a bunch of aluminum in the water, but told all their customers it was safe to drink before they knew what it was, but scientists and doctors are apparently still arguing over what effects aluminum exposure can have (see: “Aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease: after a century...
“Look, I’ve watched the first two thirds of a lot of mafia movies, and it’s obvious that you can just go around intimidating and assaulting people to get what you want with a bunch of other people willing to do the same, and nothing bad will ever happen to you because everyone’s always got everybody else’s backs. I don’t know why more people don’t do thi- [sudden cut to black].”
I don’t have the time or brainpower to write something as nice as these two comments, but if you love those albums for these reasons you have to check out Sandinista!, it’s a bit messy and overstuffed with ideas at 3 vinyls in length, but the best 2 vinyls worth of music the Clash ever did is in there imo
My profile will give you an idea, but I give this community a glance at least once every 24 hours and probably could step it up more if I was needed
I want to maintain a space where people can share facts, opinions, and the occasional joke about important things that shape all of our lives. Also, I watched reddit’s politics page go from occasionally OK to horribly moderated dumpster fire from about 2011-a month ago and I don’t want to see that happen here.
I would strive to apply them equally and stick to their literal content as much as possible, only doing my own interpretation of them when it seems necessary. I’d also try to work with other mods and get consensus on determinations wherever possible. I’d also try to be open to appeals from users to reconsider determinations. Lastly, I’d try to use the least harsh means that would produce the effect I’m looking for (e.g. try to avoid banning where a removal would do).
So long as your “political views” aren’t about whether certain people with skin tones/ethnicities/national origins/sexual preferences/genitalia/physical ability limitations/religious practices that make you uncomfortable should be allowed to exist in peace with full legal equality, no.
The list was compiled by Visit Lauderdale, formerly known as the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Broward’s tourism arm said the lost conventions could have brought hotel stays to Fort Lauderdale and its surrounding cities, which also meant money spent on restaurants and attractions.
“We lost this program due to political climate,” according to a Visit Lauderdale spreadsheet listing the decision of the Supreme Council of America Inc., Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite Masons to cancel their convention — and 855 rooms — in August 2024.
“We were so close on this one,” reads the notes on the entry for the 2024 National Family and Community Engagement and Community Schools Conference, which needed more than 2,000 rooms and has bailed. “But, group decided to pull out of Florida due to concerns about what the Governor is doing in the education/schools and that he will likely run in 2024. They do not want to lose attendees due to this.”
I’m reading between the lines a little bit here, but I’m pretty sure that spreadsheet/list the Sun Sentinel is referencing was like an internal document they weren’t planning to publish but handed over to the Sun because they’re so pissed off about how their local economy has been trashed (like, I just spent some time searching around Visit Lauderdale’s website and I couldn’t find anything like what the Sun describes available for the public).
Can you imagine how pissed off an official tourism bureau has to be to leak bad news to a local newspaper? That just does not ever happen.
He won by less than a percentage point in 2018. When he ran against Charlie Crist in 2022 he won with close to 60%, but that was more about Crist being a garbage candidate who stumped for Sarah Palin happily in 2008 but decided the Republican party was irredeemable in 2010 (after he lost a Republican primary to Marco Rubio). Run someone who isn’t a transparent hack against DeSantis and he’s totally beatable, even with Florida voters.
Go ahead and list an example of one of those past conservative intellectuals and we’ll see how long it takes to dig up an example of them saying something like Civil Rights protesters are all secret communist agents or that child labor and vagrancy laws and debtors prisons are good things.
Like, I get the appeal in wanting to believe the other side is just as smart and well meaning as our side is, but there’s just no basis for that in the historical record. They’ve always been like this and we just keep forgetting.
Honestly this whole “conservatives are just a bunch of dumb rabid animals” is they exact sentiment they want us to feel. Because then we never look at the deeper issues that are actually affecting our world.
I for one would love to look at the deeper issues that are actually affecting our world, but I end up wasting a ton of my time replying to dumb rabid animal shit David Brooks gets to smear all over the New York Times op-ed page when my older relatives who vote in every single election send me his columns because they think that he makes some good points about “Cultural Marxism”
I highly doubt measures to make it harder for the federal government to do things taken right after the civil rights movement and great society actually got the federal government into the business of fighting discrimination and poverty in a comprehensive and proactive way were ever well intentioned, but otherwise this article is on point

In a nation of over 330 million people with 16 million vacant homes, 1.3 million is supposed to be a problem? I don’t buy it, the resources and money are there, we just lack the political will to put them into play.
then they just disappear and never show up to appointments
You should cite something about how often that sort of thing happens (and how often it happens because the courts reschedule a hearing date and then don’t do a good job of relaying that information to the applicant because the contact information they have on file doesn’t get updated), but either way I’d personally rather have them go missing in the United States instead of Mexico or another country, because they’re a lot more likely to be ultimately found in a mass grave in the latter case.
If you’re looking for some sort of common ground - I could probably endorse putting ankle monitors on asylum applicants or something similar to keep tabs on them because I do think they’ve got less of a right to privacy than a citizen, but slamming the door in their face and saying “good luck with those drug cartels” shouldn’t be an option.
These vetoes are similar to the line-item veto powers granted to governors of most other states, but Wisconsin’s partial veto is uniquely powerful. That difference is because, unlike in other states, governors in Wisconsin can strike nearly any part of a budget bill, including sentences, words or in some cases even a single character or digit.

The blue wall is 235-ish EV due to 2020 census changes. DeSantis needs to win Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania or he has no chance.
