I’m off to Halifax Digital Festval today. It’s a 3-day festival: this is day 2. The theme for the day is GenAI and Data. I’m mainly here to make up the data part! I have a short pitch later on, but interested to hear what the day brings.
Having set up a few guitars in my time, I have to say this is the first time I’ve tackled setting the action (aka string height) on an acoustic guitar. Quite daunting, given sandpaper is involved. Plays much better now!
Been tinkering about with rsync to automatically publish static sites. Found out some useful stuff after much trawling of Stack Overflow et al, so thought I’d write it up. I’m sure that future me will find this useful.
It has already proved useful to do this, as I needed a test site to check if a library upgrade to the newest version of the Lume SSG was working. I was quickly able to spin up a completely separate site to check everything worked Ok after I got the basic build sorted and error-free.
Just downloaded the Tusks app created by @bardi. I’m planning to use this for public journalling, mainly about stuff that I’m working on. Apologies in advance for the sudden increase in questionable value content. I suspect it’ll last a week and then normal service will be resumed. First impressions of the app are good. Reminds me of Birdhouse. Really nice to be able to see only my posts, and focus on writing, rather than responding
For fans of playful avant-garde French jazz with occasional hints of Motörhead, but orchestrated with over-processed harp and flute, I can heartily recommend the Nout Live Album
I’m off work next week and planning to read some Ursula K Le Guin, whose works I’ve unconscionably omitted from my reading until being obliquely recommended “Vaster Than Empires And More Slow” recently. Having done that, where should I start? #LazyWeb#RecommendationsPlease
@gilesdring@danhon The Wizard of Earthsea books are also good (read the first three aloud to my kids after having read them as a teenager) and are a great feminist antidote to Game of Thrones.
@wlukewindsor@danhon Yes. They were on my radar too. Was more in a science fiction mood, but also read a bunch of short stories (cross genre), and was very impressed with her ability to bend the genre to her style, rather than the other way round
And it’s done. A replacement bracket for a Muji CD1 player. Fits like the original, though the print quality could be a bit better - it was a draft to check sizing, but looks like it’ll actually do the job.
@gilesdring always happy to be a rubber duck 😆 I find incorporating jQuery into modern stuff can be really tricky, much as I still rate jQuery, it can be a party pooper
London-adjacent Masto-friends with a penchant for music on the heavier end: The Armed play at Outernet on 12th June this year. Should be good. I’m going to be at the Leeds show the day before.
I should add: Leeds-adjacent Masto-friends with a penchant for music on heavier end: get to the Brudenell Social Club on 11th June. I’ll see you there. #refract
It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to it, but Clear by Bomb The Bass stands up supremely well. Not only for Bug Powder Dust (which absolutely SLAPPPPS!) but the rest as well…
For my tastes (which are admittedly not for everyone) this is one of those albums which brilliantly encapsulates the development of a significant portion of American DIY music. Sobering that this 20 year retrospective is now 23 years old. #Dischord
Currently listening to Wig Out At Denko’s by Dag Nasty, which was an album I “discovered” (i.e. bought at the local indie record shop) and introduced to the gang of school friends who were listening to DC hardcore in Worcester (Worcestershire) (UK) in 1987 or so. It still sounds like the future. Sadly I no longer have my original vinyl LP. I re-bought it on CD in 2004 from a record shop in Chapel Hill North Carolina, which is possibly the closest I ever got to the source.
