I appreciate that its not the same as voting with your conscience (I would vote Green!) but with our crappy 'first past the post' electoral system, first and foremost the UK needs an end to continuous Tory governments. Using this link I get an idea of who I need to vote for in my constituency to, statistically if not morally, absolutely clobber the Tories into oblivion.

Tip: Stop "googling" for information. Learn how to "wiki" any subject from the wikipedia Main_Page search bar.

Try it now. Look up anything. Then select "Further Reading" or "External Links" for the deep web we use to get from google.

https://phanpy.social is a pretty incredible Mastodon client. Entirely web based, looks great on mobile and desktop, you can configure your shortcuts that appear above or below the river of news.

Some screenshots from my own account: good notifications page, different kinds of toots get a different status, plus Boosts are shown in their own carousel.

I've heard one developer made all this, it's pretty incredible.

Boosts are rolled up into a carousel of toots you can view with sideways scrolling
Threads are shown grouped together and single posts from threads are indicated as such.

Yes, I can confirm that it feels amazing to be able to create your own music.

YOU SHOULD TRY IT SOMETIME

I'm super enjoying everyone discovering that the aurora looks almost nothing like it does in photos but is somehow even more magical once you learn how to see it. It's beautiful, isn't it?

If you think you can only see the northern lights from your phone, you're probably wrong, it's just it shows up differently to the camera. To see with your eyes, look at a star, shielding out any streetlights. Stare at that star, and out of the corners of your eyes you'll start to see bright patches that look like smoke or hazy bright clouds. That's it! Keep looking, not directly at it, and you'll begin to see streaks and ribbons, and subtle changes, sometimes a little bit of colour.

Steve Albini would see kids' letters to Santa and then personally deliver the presents they asked for on Christmas Morning.

This is a dimension I had not been aware of.

Been tinkering about with rsync to automatically publish static sites. Found out some useful stuff after much trawling of Stack Overflow et al, so thought I’d write it up. I’m sure that future me will find this useful.

I thought 'Oh, a silly grammar cock-up that makes for a fun local news story'. Then I read the first line. I won't spoil the surprise but maybe make sure there's no-one close when you yell 'OH FOR FU...'

Ever fancied making your own nacho cheese?

50ml lemon juice
1/2 tsp baking soda
80ml milk
200g cheese

  1. Mix lemon juice and baking soda
  2. Allow fizzing to stop. Congratulations, you’ve made Sodium Citrate.
  3. Add milk and bring to simmer
  4. Melt cheese into the liquid. It should remain gooey.

Tusks is a little indie Mastodon app by @bardi that lets you see just your posts and compose new ones (with a focus on making it easy to compose threads).

Just bought myself a lifetime license.

Check it out at https://thirdculture.app/tusks

Love to see indie devs making useful little tools that do what they say on the tin and nothing more (check out the privacy policy in the attached screenshot).
