haui_lemmy,

PostmarketOS to actually own your phone.

haui_lemmy,

Not any phone to be totally honest but many and growing.

Check here to see the devices that are supported.

But disclaimer: its a foss project so it wont ever be perfect and if you like the project, consider contributing and help solving issues instead of judging because that doesnt help anyone.

haui_lemmy,

Lineage and Graphene are based on android and bear the danger of support loss when google drops support.

PostmarketOS is actual Linux (alpine is the base to be exact).

Graphene definitely is a lot more advanced since it uses all the proprietary blobs of android. There is no use in comparing the two. Its like comparing lemmy and reddit in terms of technical finesse.

It works very well for some apps already but it is highly dependent on people supporting either financially or through contributions (code, issues, translations, documentation, tutorials).

haui_lemmy,

Not really. Pmos works increasingly well and keeps you away from being dependent on vendor specific android updates because it is actual linux.

You can check the devices page for compatibility. Most community supported phones can do phone things. Cameras are an issue though since they are highly complex and obviously proprietary crap.

haui_lemmy,

Yeah, people should not judge things without testing them first. Pmos works well on supported devices. Its not for the end user at this point imo though.

haui_lemmy,

Technically, every smartphone is a computer. Sorry if you thought you bought a phone. :)

The difference is that this is a full fledged linux operating system instead of the proprietary crap that comes with ios and android.

The downside at this point is that it’s not in end user stadium but a lot of folks are working on making that a reality. If you consider yourself a tinkerer, chances are you might be able to test it, maybe on a non daily driver phone if you have an old one, especially if its out of support.

haui_lemmy,

This is market manipulation at its best. The whole board should be jailed for it.

haui_lemmy,

Important addition: the majority of people isnt equipped for this kind of game. Patience and ability to grasp this kind of thing is what makes the computer nerds the computer nerds.

Programming and sysadmin stuff isnt really popular either for that express reason.

There's apparently a Reddit activity streak achievement system now. (lemmy.world)

I just noticed this when I saw a strange “Achievement Unlocked” notification pop up on Reddit. What do you think of this? It seems like a retention tactic to me, like what Amino had with its streak leaderboards, and GameFAQs currently has with streak achievements for logging on ten days in a row and also for all days of a...

The fediverse won’t succeed at putting up a substitute and that’s a problem?

Just an impression: All the pieces seem to be there. But what’s required is a team, with devs, PMs and coordinators, dedicated to making a particular place in the .

That’s resources and decently sized financial and organisational demands, especially to get a critical mass of users.

Is the fediverse up to that challenge? If not, is it an issue worth addressing?

@fediverse

I dont think thats accurate. The problem here is data quality. In SO you likely get few but good answers because the system is designed that way. Thats why its not done here a lot. I tried asking code and sysadmin stuff here. The amount of hate and bs answers you get is shocking. SO is also insanely moderated. Something that isnt really feasible for mainline lemmy.

I think a fork of lemmy would work though. With the karma requirement that SO has to post and the same requirements.

SO is a meritocracy. Its not a nice feeling to not be able to answer a question. But it works. because you have to ask questions first, then comment and then post answers (iirc). this would not work on lemmy. but a special fork together with an instance (or many) could work imo.

Disclaimer: I designed and wrote a couple of programs for a company I created and others. it worked well. Not saying I know everything. Just my ideas.

PS: I made a mastodon fork to recreate linkedin/xing feel free to leave a star)

haui_lemmy,

Thats not a bad idea. I might look into this. The karma requirement would not be the only thing. Making it impossible to comment until you asked a question is going to be hard I guess, no?

If you‘re down for it, lets discuss this and make a design draft for a faithful copy of SO under lemmy. I am willing to work for it. Just cant do it alone.

haui_lemmy,

I suppose you dont have to look up code often, yes? Because SO is the goto for many devs and searching for answers to most general code questions lead there.

Obviously, the design leads to absurd situations sometimes since not everyone is allowed to post an opinion piece. You will likely rather get no answer than a wrong one. In that case you either have achieved a really niche problem or you should try asking another way or you might be looking at the problem the wrong way.

And it works insanely good on the OnePlus6. I‘m working on that rn. If you want „perfect“ without spending money (donating) or contributing, I suggest proprietary stuff though. Not because I believe its good. I just want to show people that „perfect“ is not a healthy demand.

haui_lemmy,

Its doable I guess but you will have to check and see if the stuff you need works well enough. If you can compromise, you will likely get it working. Bonus points if you can donate or contribute. I contribute. My OP6 works very well but I‘m still transitioning.

haui_lemmy,

Its far more advanced by now. I use fluffychat for matrix communication, landscape mode works very well, I‘m working on porting bitwarden to pmos rn but its gonna take more time or someone else to help.

A litany of apps is already working on pmos and they’re becoming more numerous every day. Still, it is a community effort so feel obligated to contribute (as you should with every program not selling your data).

haui_lemmy,

Good you say it out loud. That way you and others can be shown that this is a false assumption.

Ways to contribute but not limited to:

  • Donate money so people can produce foss instead of for profit/proprietary crap
  • Help translate
  • write wikis or documentation
  • follow discussions on the project forum/website
  • spread articles/news about the project

Obviously, telling others about it is still helping and valid. But saying you cant contribute any other way seems unlikely.

Thanks for bringing it up.

haui_lemmy,

I‘m autistic as well so please feel relate to on that front.

  1. thats rough.
  2. you dont need to understand translation software. Your assumption (again) is that you do. I dont understand translation software either. Translating for foss often means reading a sentence and writing it down in your mother tongue
  3. you are writing it in pretty flawless fashion so whatever you‘re talking about is another false assumption. Even if you use a translation app it doesnt show at all
  4. thats what throwaway email accounts are for. Nobody is saying sign up and forget it. I‘m saying help others who use the software and report your own bugs.
  5. cant comment on sedatives since I dont use any but I get the notion that people are hard to deal with.

In conclusion, we autistic people tend to get stuck in our ways more often and need to rethink our approach to things so we can live without self imposed, unnecessary restrictions.

Have a good one.

haui_lemmy,

Whatever you think mate. I stand by my initial statement. I can relate to the inflexibility of your thoughts because its a thing I often struggle with as well. I wont refrain from anything though as you can probably imagine. Have a good one.

haui_lemmy,

Honestly, it think thats a really good idea. Proprietary consoles are a relict and its great if they go away and get replaced by open platforms like the steamdeck and steam machines (not necessarily affiliated with valve though).

haui_lemmy,

Fully agree. I would even outlaw the walled garden concept completely. I would necessitate interconnecting APIs for everything. So that I can call apples app store over their api from any machine for example.

If someone comes up with an example that overburdens a company, they need to allow others to make such tools for free.

Also, i would outlaw any fee on things that cant be explained logically. Like apple tax for example.

Same obviously goes for consoles.

haui_lemmy,

Amen

haui_lemmy,

Kicked out before legal age. Before that it was mostly physical and emotional abuse.

Its not easy but I manage. Christmas and other typical family days I spend with people that dont celebrate them or by working. If you let it get to you, it hurts like a motherfucker.

I found a spouse that loves me and vice versa. We have a couple of animals, some distant relatives of my spouse and a select few friends we all consider our family.

I don't know anything about Linux and the idea of installing it frightens me. Where do I start?

I bought a laptop yesterday, it came pre-installed with Windows 11. I hate win 11 so I switched it down to Windows 10, but then started considering using Linux for total control over the laptop, but here’s the thing: I keep seeing memes about how complicated or fucky wucky Linux is to install and run. I love the idea of open...

haui_lemmy,

No. Thats exactly the reason why folks get frustrated with linux. Because folks cant fathom how much handholding a user needs in the beginning.

apt and systemd based distro is great for beginners, so is gnome. They‘re very popular and a lot of folks know how to troubleshoot if possible.

I suggest you make your own suggestions instead of trying to „correct“ others‘.

haui_lemmy,

You really have issues mate. I couldnt give a damn if you think that gnome‘s ux is bad. Thats your opinion and neither did I ask you for it nor is it helpful to others. But good luck with that attitude.
