haui_lemmy,

Check out forgejo. While git is „decentralized“ it is not discoverable. Forgejo is pretty much there afaik using ap protocol.

haui_lemmy,

Although I get the idea, going all in on the privacy would mean you can never log in with a single account you have since they bind it to your ip and you’ve lost. Also using vpns all the time or tor if possible/necessary. Imo, its far too much work to go full paranoia mode.

So I‘m running debian stable with kde (dont do it on nvidia!) and pop os on a laptop. Firefox, adblock plus and pihole do most of the heavy lifting. Gaming, working and other activities on the same machine works well without vms. I do use vms in specific dev Environments though.

For kids, an immutable distro sounds like a great idea. Good luck and have a nice day.

haui_lemmy,

Debian stable is pretty much a meme since it prioritizes stability over everything else. So you get the oldest kernel and will get the latest features months after every other distro. Since kde has only recently gotten wayland+nvidia support, it is pretty janky on debian stable still. It just makes no sense imo for a desktop pc. Pop is way better.

haui_lemmy,

Every time I read news like this I‘m glad I moved to my own cloud.

haui_lemmy,

Check out my setup if you want.

Costs depend on a lot of factors. If you are technically adept you might be able to get away with 20 bucks a month for the whole setup but most folks wouldn’t imo. I also have some old hardware I was able to use and upgraded it. Initial invest for a homeserver varies greatly depending on who you know.

If you want to know more please ask. You can also hit me up on matrix. Link in bio.

haui_lemmy,

What would keep people living/companies working in the US from moving their infrastructure out of the country and having encrypted tunnels?

haui_lemmy,

Not sure if this applies but incidentally I changed my otp manager from microsoft to vaultwarden today. Adding security keys in the process is mostly two additional clicks. Of the 20 accounts I migrated, only about 7 had the option and only with one it was more work than adding totp.

haui_lemmy,

Happy to hear it works for others as well. :)

haui_lemmy,

Its a pretty tough decision what to use for this imo since technically, you‘re right. Then again, you already have to log into your os and unlock the password safe to get the passwords or the otps.

The reason why mfa is done is if your password leaks you are not completely effed. You can obviously use a second selfhosted service with a different password but chances are most people would rather use something easier.

Also, passkeys work the same way. They work if you are logged into a device. That way you get no additional password except you can only use it from the device in question.

haui_lemmy,

For those who are already free of physical media: leaving them in a small enclosure like this in the sun will probably destroy them in the summer. DVDs and Blurays dont take lightly to extreme heat afaik.

haui_lemmy,

Depends on what reddit was for you. If it was because consooom (more=better) then you might wanna try twitter next. Same goes for drama.

If you want forum style social media with mostly real people and interesting content, then you should probably stay here.

I dont know what option three would be but feel free to tell me.

haui_lemmy,

One of the many companies that should definitely be barred from acquiring any more companies and rather be broken up into smaller companies.

haui_lemmy,

Not at all. Nation sized companies are authoritarian rogue-states which happen to provide a good product. We should treat them as the danger to our planet that they are.

haui_lemmy,

The people in power can finally kill and maim anyone who could ever oppose them more efficiently! Great! /s

haui_lemmy,

Sometimes its real easy and I‘m taking a month off and nothing breaks. Then I have times where I want to add new services or optimize stuff. This can take forever. Right now I‘m building object storage behind a vpn.

haui_lemmy,

Matrix is pretty user friendly imo but you will not get data-gobbler‘s levels of convenience because they have billions to invest in the software, FOSS doesnt. It works out of the box mostly but you as admin need to be quite adept.

haui_lemmy,

Since nobody seems to have a solution handy I should share what I learned thus far:

This setup is essentially like the *arr suite and therefore I can use a similar configuration. The docker container of the object storage should be able to use the vpn container as a network device.

I‘m not totally sure how to do it on the other side since the n-containers have two network connections each, vpn and outside world, not to be mixed, for security reasons. Its probably not even a big deal but now its nearly done.

Its not implemented yet so its all theoretical. I might update once its done.

haui_lemmy,

I know. I live in germany. But celebrating unionizing efforts is part of this community.

haui_lemmy,

Servus! :)

haui_lemmy,

I hope you dont work in a customer facing position then. You literally have no idea how to talk to someone in a respectful manner.

So, my initial take was correct. You do need an open port and if you want your router to manage it, you have to isolate the vpn from the rest of the network.

Anyway, since this isnt going anywhere and you keep being irritating, I‘m gonna call it. Good luck with that attitude.

haui_lemmy,

I have barely any experience yet I set a super high goal and am surprised when stuff breaks.

There, fify. Jokes aside, good you tried.

If you really want to ditch windows I suggest something easy like mint or pop_os (which I use on my nvidia laptop). Its important to learn the differnces and get used to the OS before learning tons of new stuff.

Most important thing to learn imo: there are two really noteworthy DEs (Desktop Environments), gnome and kde plasma. The rest imo is more or less similar to either of these, at least imo.

The only thing a normal user really interacts with most of the time are DEs. So the are no reason to choose a distro over another.

The distro itself often isnt really different either. Most defferences will come down to how the tasks are performed (ie systemd) and packages/package management.

Debian based distros work well for beginners from what I see (except debian itself imo). Debian, ununtu, mint and pop come from the same roots. Especially debian stable isnt something I can recommend atm but you do you. I use debian on my desktop with kde and nvidia and it fkin sucks without tinkering. I think kde isnt in a great spot atm with nvidia as they also dont support the proprietary drivers on kde neon (ubuntu based).

I personally have no exp with fedora so I cant really comment on that.

Arch has been a great learning experience but it was too much for me as a daily so I left it on a vm. I might come back to it at some point.

Good luck.
