Hi Helix, it’s a QNAP TS-251A, not sure what the software version is (or what it is, QTS?); where would I find that? I remember trying to install Nextcloud on it at one point and almost had to have myself committed after repeated failures (I’m not really that tech savvy 🙁, but I try . . . ). Can you point me to some instructions on how to install Docker on QNAP? I’m not sure what you mean when you say that sync is not a backup, although I may be using the term incorrectly. How do you define a backup? Thanks for your response.

EDIT: Also, would you say that I’m moving in the right direction here, moving from, I guess, a scheduled backup (?) to a continuous sync-type setup w/Syncthing if I have issues with slowness? I’m also waiting for Tuta(nota)'s legendary and forever forthcoming TutaDrive as another possible solution, but that’s probably still pretty far off.

I like and use Relay as well. Probably a very naive thought, but couldn’t Mozilla just ask for donations the way Wikipedia does?

👻 Customizing a Ghost(.org) theme, having trouble with fonts 🤦

Let me start off by saying that I barely know what I’m doing here: I’m taking over a web page from someone who can’t maintain it anymore. It’s currently using WordPress(.org), for, I guess, CMS, but after doing some research, I really liked the look of Ghost, and so I’m trying to recreate the current page there, though...

Amazon is working on a new paid subscription plan for its Alexa voice assistant (www.businessinsider.com)

Amazon is revamping its Alexa voice assistant as it prepares to launch a new paid subscription plan this year, according to internal documents and people familiar with the matter. But the change is causing internal conflict and may lead to further delay.

Firefox with arkenfox.js: Are these extensions still useful?

After a long while, I checked back on the arkenfox.js github page, and they no longer mention two extensions I still use: (1) CanvasBlocker (because if Resist Fingerprinting is enabled in about:config, the per page zoom levels get changed and that drives me crazy), and (2) Smart Referer (because, well, it was recommended). I...

@mnglw and @jarfil , do either of you know how to implement the “removeparam” thingamabobber? I’m just about at the limits of what my poor brain can handle here . . . 🤯

I’m on Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.2; power-profiles-daemon does not seem to be installed on my system 🤔. Typing cat /sys/firmware/acpi/platform_profile in the terminal comes up as “low-power”, which is what I switched it to from “balanced” by hitting Fn+l. How do I get this setting to survive reboot? Do I uncomment “=low-power” or is there another way?

I’m afraid that’s beyond my current skill set, but thank you anyway! 🙂

That would explain it! I think I remember seeing Jacobin as being the same degree of liberal as The Atlantic, and there’s no way that could be right! Oops, I mean “correct.” 🙄

Israel-Palestine megathread for the remainder of the weekend

the front page is now like half articles on this currently, so it’s probably time for a megathread because none of us want to keep track of 12 threads on this subject and all the resulting comments. only major subsequent developments (for example, boots on the ground; pronunciations by governments; that sort of stuff) will get...

🤔 That is awfully expensive. I’m very eager to get rid of InDesign, since I’m on Linux and I have to run it on a Windows VM, which isn’t too bad, but can be kind of a pain. What features (that are important to you) do you not get if you’re only using the free version?

👍Thanks for the tip, will definitely look into.

Unfortunately I think the app data for spices is kept in the home folder which isn’t affected by snapshots, but thanks for your answer!

How exactly do Matrix bridges work? Are they secure?

What I’m looking for ultimately is a universal chat type app like Beeper that can handle Signal and SMS, however, reading this about it gives me pause. It would be nice if I could get all my peeps on matrix, but since it was so hard to get them on to Signal, I think the best I can hope for is something than can handle matrix,...

How can I do that? KDE Connect is one option I’m looking at

Oh boy. I think I’m really out of my depth here. I just downloaded Element and was fiddling with it a bit and found it to be kind of confusing. Maybe I oughta just stick with Signal despite centralization and signalcoin. Would be nice to be able to get SMS on the desktop tho, so I don’t have to go hunting for my phone everytime I have to do 2FA (which, admittedly, is not that often). In any event, thanks to @wxboss & @GlowingLantern.

[SOLVED] Need help verifying Signal Android APK

I’m downloading Signal from the website, even tho they don’t seem to want you to, because I’d like to be able to completely rid myself of the Google Play Store (as used with Aurora which has its own problems from time to time), and I believe that this version auto-updates or at least tells you when there is one. Following...

Following the link on the download page, I did

apksigner verify Signal-Android-website-prod-universal-release-6.24.4.apk

which returns lines and lines of errors that look similar to this:

WARNING: META-INF/com/android/build/gradle/app-metadata.properties not protected by signature. Unauthorized modifications to this JAR entry will not be detected. Delete or move the entry outside of META-INF/.

I also tried, after asking for help from Signal support:

keytool -list -printcert -jarfile Signal-Android-website-prod-universal-release-6.24.4.apk

and got

keytool error: java.lang.Exception: Only one command is allowed: both -list and -printcert were specified.

I barely understand any of this; really I just want to make sure that the app is safe, properly verified, and not tampered with (which seems kind of unlikely in any event . . . ?)

UPDATE: If I do

apksigner verify --print-certs Signal-Android-website-prod-universal-release-6.24.4.apk

I get

followed by a whole lot more of those WARNING: META-INF thingies, but I believe #1 is correct?

How much of your life have you degoogled? (beehaw.org)

We're reaching the end of an era wherein billions of dollars of investor money was shovelled into tech startups to build large user-bases, and now those companies (now monoliths) are beginning to constrict their user-bases and squeeze for every single penny they can possibly extract. Fair or not....

What boggles my mind is that people are apparently moving to Texas, Florida, and the Southwest in droves because (at least in part) "California isn't nice anymore," "has too many regulations", whatever; do these folks know that they're moving to some of the most heat-stressed and water-stressed parts of the US? I'm guessing that a lot of them will be regretting their decision to move sooner rather than later. But to those who are already there, please do your best to stay cool and safe!
