honeyontoast,

Accounts are made immediately on application so it's probably you, it might not have been approved yet though

honeyontoast,

I loved them, I miss them dearly, but no, I don't think they'll come back.

A lot has changed and the internet is not the same, for better and for worse. For one, it's just a lot bigger. You'd think that'd make it easier, but it seems to make it harder. There's too much noise for the communities to stand out, so what usually happens is one or two get huge and the others dwindle and die. Even just look at Lemmy, through no fault of your own, Beehaw is becoming one of the largest instances and it requires active work to spread the weight across the rest of the federation. People gravitate I guess.

Plus, because it's so much bigger, there's less of an identity in the spaces that do survive. Post in any reddit thread, then go to another. Chances are nobody'll be the same (except for a few superusers) so there's no real sense of belonging or community that the old forums had. Back then you trolled your friends, not strangers.

Does anyone use induction burners? Looking for recommendations.

I'm looking at buying an induction burner but it's hard to find which brands may be reliable. Most of the youtube reviews are done by review bot channels and relying on amazon reviews in this day and age... yeah. So does anyone have any experience with these and know of a brand that I can go toward?

honeyontoast,

Do you mean a full hob (e.g. 4-6 spots) or a single plug-in 'hot plate' type dealio? For the former Bosch or Hotpoint should be decent enough, I don't know if they make the latter though. I personally stay clear of Beko but that's not because of their hobs, used to have a washing machine they made and it was awful.

Either way we made the switch to induction earlier this year and love it. Just check your pans are magnetic first, or be willing to replace them!

honeyontoast,

My frying pan extends over the ring by about an inch all around, until now it was never a problem because whatever I was cooking was getting stirred, but this morning I tried making pancakes and there was a very noticeable raw ring on the edge when the middle was fully cooked.

However, I think this is likely an issue of experience. I'm not used to cooking pancakes on induction so if I had used a slightly lower heat setting and let the pan properly heat up I think I could have avoided it.

Induction can be very quick to achieve a high temperature on areas with direct contact, but if the ring is small only the middle part of the pan will be hot enough. For things being stirred that's not much of an issue, but if even cooking is a big deal for you then it might take a bit of practice getting the pan right.

honeyontoast,

One of the things I like is because induction works by directly heating the metal, on the rare occasion something does spill over it doesn't burn nearly as badly because it only gets residual heat. Wipes off really easily.

They also cool down very quickly if you have children or pets to worry about.

I'm glad I made the switch. The pros far outweigh the cons for me, and with the pancakes/crepes I think it's just a learning curve.

honeyontoast,

I like a lot of what I consider 'classic' metal, which I hope is not offensive. Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Dio, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin. I like a lot of nu metal too, I hope that doesn't get me banned.

I'd like to try more, I think it's just the extreme varieties I can't really get into.

honeyontoast,

On the point of servers not being connected - by default an instance will federate with all other instances. Admins have the ability to add a whitelist (only connect to these instances) or blacklist (connect to everything except these).

There are some unsavoury instances out there that don't mesh with the Beehaw philosophy so they're blocked.

The nice thing is you can run your own instance and federate with everyone if you don't like the idea of blocking instances. You might find others will block you if they don't agree with your content but that's their choice.

honeyontoast,

Suicidal chickens. See plenty of them standing at the roadside in the UK, their favourite pastime is running into traffic.

Beautiful creatures but it's so tense driving past them!

honeyontoast,

Moved out of York earlier this year and will be heading back for a proper visit for the the first time since the move today. Going to be strange driving past the place I lived for years but on the plus side, it's one of the few places in the UK with a taco bell!

honeyontoast,

Never been to the US to try theirs but we like it.

honeyontoast,

You don't need to be out to explain why it's okay to be LGBTQ+. If those questions ever come, answer them as if you were an ally. The answer is the same anyway.

But right now don't stress - not every religious organisation will be homophobic, I went to a Catholic secondary school (UK) that was supportive. Unless you're familiar with this particular group already they might not be as bad as you think.

As for what you can do personally, if you're atheist (and open about that) then show her you don't have to be Christian to have good morals. Just generally be a good older sibling. Hopefully it all works out.

honeyontoast,

It's going to depend highly on what actually happens. She's 4, she's a bit young still. Given you're posting online I think it would be relatively safe to assume that when she's older she'll also be online? Being a part of an international community is the easiest way of expanding one's views.

honeyontoast,

It's really great your little sister has an older sibling already looking out for her. That in itself is a great start.

  • honeyontoast,

If a community exists solely to hate on others, even as a joke, eventually it won't be a joke.

Maybe I just don't get the appeal though.

Random opinion I needed to tell the world: It's not weird or bad that kids want to grow up to be influencers.

Apparently these days, the most popular dream job among children is influencer. I've seen articles about it, and both the articles and the comments are invariably full of judgy statements about how Kids These Days^TM^ are such narcissists/their brains are being rotted by social media/they don't want to do anything valuable with...

    honeyontoast,

Kids have always had wild career dreams, it's not new it's just a different medium. It's fine. I'm not sure it's a conscious decision to escape the grind though. I grew up with kids who wanted to be movie stars or athletes. Why? Because they idolised movie stars and athletes and want to be like them. It's what they're exposed to the most. Now kids are exposed to influencers the most, so they wanna be one too.

I wanted to be a train driver 🚂

Are we doing Thursday complaints? Because I have a COMPLAINT. (beehaw.org)

I've been trying to get into a routine of going for a morning walk. It's not far, just basically climbing a hill near home, sitting down on a bench at the top pretending to enjoy the view but really trying not to pass out because I'm terribly unfit, then back down....

    honeyontoast,

This reminded me of an old rant I have, if legacy rants are allowed.

In a job I had many years ago I met a Lord. An actual Lordy Lord. He used one of these things frequently, but it's not part of the rant.

Where I worked sold stone, big slabs of stone for using as big slabs of stone. He came to us on a particularly rainy day and asked me to show him around the yard. I look out the window, rain is pelting the floor and ricocheting back into the sky. We go outside. He had an umbrella, I did not. He did not offer to share.

So around the yard we go, and I show him all the stone. When we reach the last one he turns to me and says "perhaps I'll come back when it's not raining".

    honeyontoast,

On a different occasion when we were selling Christmas trees his groundskeeper came to us and asked for a free tree for the Lord.

They weren't the same of course but we found it funny because the Lord owned the woodlands behind the shop. He didn't get a free tree.

    honeyontoast,

You just reminded me of 3D Pets which might be the first game I ever played on PC...

    https://oldgamesdownload.com/3d-pets-pc-pup/

I can distinctly remember the janky animations of the dog running after a ball. And the dog and cat coming out of an egg. It was weird.

    honeyontoast,

Sorry if this was answered elsewhere, but does that mean Beehaw automatically federates with new instances and only the explicit Blocklist can't? I was toying with the idea of maintaining my own single user instance for stability but don't want to run the risk of being excluded if it goes private in the future.

    honeyontoast,

Out of frame someone has their foot gently placed on the bottom step. Proper safe.

    honeyontoast,

Does Blazor count? I've done a little with that. Mostly though, no. My job doesn't require much frontend work and even if it did it would be jQuery at best.

I don't think you'd really need to either unless you genuinely enjoy being at the bleeding edge. React, Angular and Vue aren't going anywhere any time soon. That could be laziness talking...

    honeyontoast,

As a .NET developer with a strong dislike of JavaScript being able to write a frontend using C# is fantastic. The only complaints I ever hear about it is actually around Visual Studio support and not Blazor itself.

I really hope it takes off.

    honeyontoast,

    I have one to add:

Programmers believe languages have a flag.

I used to work on a system that supported multiple languages and had to fight very hard not to put a country's flag next to each language on the front end. People's responses to the "wrong" flag being used for their language ranged from slightly annoyed to extremely volatile...
