Is there some kind of dribbble/behance equivalent portfolio platform for interface designers to show non-visual design or non-graphic design oriented work?

With projects & essays like these on interface exploration?

https://a9.io/glue-comic/

Where folks come up with novel UI metaphors, conventions, design concepts, patterns, affordances & write extensively on it?

Where they can experiment and showcase prototypes of novel UI concepts, patterns, conventions, paradigms supplemented with essays

@peter >But that's not sustainable, so the way forward must be interdisciplinary, imo.

Completely agree and I'm so happy to hear that because I'm working on a tool (a custom search engine client to be specific) that fosters interdisciplinary research :D

Thread on reasons why I think it's okay to repackage, reframe, reinvent or arrive at known and established ideas, as an individual 👇

Almost any topic is always new for somebody and that they might offer something new to it in their own way via their own methods and experiences. Their contribution doesn't have to negate yours, both can exist together

Just because something is well trodden doesn't mean that people still can't come up with their own ideas & principles related to it via reflection

The crypto-pilling of the EU political and academic classes and their subsequent absolute absence of critical analysis borders on fanaticism. It should be the subject of an investigation.

@shibacomputer Who might fund the investigation?🤔

Wow didn't know there were so many Indian restaurants in Germany

Considering how hard it is to open a business in Germany due to it's bureaucracy (esp for immigrants), I'm pleasantly surprised

@crucialfelix >I could order takeout from Birmingham, have them chuck it in the post to Berlin and it would arrive better than most places serve.

Lol that bad huh, I wonder why that is. If it's an ingredient (spices) procurement problem or the chefs themselves

I feel like conventional ux design, ux research is more appropriate for providing solutions that ease people's frustration in already existing activities, habits, ways of working. In other words catering to their existing lifestyles, existing routines, existing ways of being —Friction removal.

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

Now that envisioning can be done collectively as well ofc instead of individual way

But you need to go beyond the simple problem framing techniques that are propagated by ux, hcd, ucd. Those are too normie.

Too corporate-y. Simply not radical enough, not bold enough to ignite people's imagination of alternative futures.

That's why I love cameron tonkinwise's transition design so much, it's a vision led-practice

https://transitiondesignseminarcmu.net/

impactology,
@impactology@mastodon.social avatar

So in that approach there is a ceiling to how much can you change, status-quo is already built into that because you are researching what needs, frustrations need to be made visible of people within existing institutions as they live in it abiding by it's institutional ways (norms of workplace, school, college)

The ideas that introduce new ways of thinking, new ways of being I think demands developing a radical vision of a future, not just need finding within existing ways of working.

"The car is ‘crystallized human gesture’ & more deeply

The problem, for Simondon, is that the dominant culture negates & ignores the possibilities afforded by technology to express life."
