Pondering a privacy-considerate way to rate apps. A certain Mac app I’ve been maintaining isn’t on the Mac App Store, but I would like to get a feel for how happy/unhappy users have been trending.

Customer Sat™, or something.

I don’t really need unique identifiers. Just people randomly saying “kudos” or “meh”, I think?

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@chucker i think the challenge of privacy without the app store is that there’s no one policing the system.

so it would be trivial for an unethical developer to claim they were using the same privacy protections and yet be collecting data on every 👍/👎.

and violating trust hurts not only that bad actor, but every dev’s app that uses the system.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@chucker what we need is a third party (maybe someone like SetApp) that can provide some measure of checking that developers are doing the right things, obeying privacy norms, etc.

in essence, providing the service that apple claims they provide with app store review, notarization, etc.

@isaiah just curious about Stacks app. Any updates?

@albertkinng the answer is…

i need to keep things secret for now. sorry. i’m getting there. sorry it’s taking a while.

The nano IPS LG 49” is slowly working it’s way towards the < $1k price point and I might not be able to resist when it does.

@paul @lilstevie @b3ll

do you guys use these in native resolution on a mac? or is there some not-quite-Retina mode? or is this just for a gaming rig?

so far there just aren’t a lot of ultra wide curved options with 2160p — but i’m having trouble imagining going back to non retina while coding.

woah.

my last state-mandated drug test came back with zero of the drug they prescribe — which looks like i’m selling my meds. it also said i was a heavy smoker.

this seemed like an obvious mix up to me. but everyone probably says that regardless guilt.

welp

i just got a call from the doc confirming that it was indeed a lab mixup and was corrected.

really angry — but mostly relieved. i’ve basically been having a panic attack since this happened last week.

breath. breath.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@mackuba yeah i get tested ever 90 days (plus occasional random testing) for levels of about 30 different substances.
i have to have the right levels of the right ones and none of the others.

when they test i have to bring all the bottles of all the medications i take. the levels in my bloodstream have to be consistent with what’s missing from the medication bottles.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@mackuba ironically the CDC (the Center for Disease Control which is where these rules come from) has published a paper showing that these new (since Trump) draconian rules have no positive impact on addiction or overdose rates.

BUT

they did find that a huge percentage of people, when kicked out of pain management programs, die shortly afterwards due to suicide and accidental Fentanyl overdose — since that’s the only affordable street drug — and it’s very very easy to overdose when abusing it.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@nguarracino that’s a pretty good summary of the situation.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@nguarracino @jessicadennis no idea how it happens.

difficult: no (urine sample) — a tad embarrassing i guess.

expensive: yes. i pay about $1000 per test. there are usually 5-6 per year.

when “strange” results come back i get saddled with both the consequences and expense of more frequent follow-up testing.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@nguarracino @jessicadennis ironically i left a doctor last year because of the number of bureaucratic mistakes they made. little did i know it could be so much worse.

but i’m betting i couldn’t switch now even if i wanted to. i will have to have a solid year of perfect results with zero ambiguity before any other doctor will let me walk through the front door.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@mackuba yes. basically if they prescribe anything that can be sold on the street as an illicit recreational drug. since the 1980s there have been lots in the US that qualify.

it includes things like ADHD meds, opioids, or in my case: neurological meds. i have nerve damage in my thigh from a couple bad sports injuries when i was younger.

🚴🏼‍♂️+ 🚗
🏂 + 🏔️

neuro-meds seem like an insane thing to take to get high IMHO. maybe it’s used to make some other recreational drug? i honestly don’t know.

i live in texas now, but i’m not from here originally. i grew on the 🏝️ 🌊 in Santa Cruz 🛹 🎢 California. 🏄‍♂️ ✌️

texas likes to believe it has fewer crazy laws than california, but it doesn’t.

and the laws surrounding pain medication have ramped up significantly in the past ten years in every state. i guess it’s mostly in response to Fentanyl deaths — even if (like me) you don’t take fentanyl or anything like it.

Latest step on debugging this nightmare PC issue was replacing the whole ass motherboard, basically rebuilding the PC on the process. At least I'm quite pleased with the cable management on it.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@stevestreza i’m sad to inform you it’s time to swap the cpu.

but with so much latency between boot and failure it could really be anything.

it might be interesting to run a detailed log in the background and see if you can gather data like cpu temp voyages, etc. to see if anything looks out of whack right before failure.

but of course it’s possible the problem is happening much faster than polling and SSD write could catch — so might be a fools errand anyway.

good luck.

are unit tests in xcode 14 fucked for everyone or just me?

xcode 14.1 would gobble up 15GB of memory every time i ran my complete unit test suite. i got really tired or quitting and relaunching…

so i “upgraded” to 14.3.

well, i guess that’s one way to fix the memory leak!!!

a crashing app always frees all its memory.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@chucker yeah that’s a pretty good summary.

the irony here is that i only use substantial unit tests for one tiny portion of my app (which is decidedly not tiny at all anymore). but being a solo dev makes a lot of things simple.

i can’t imagine how difficult it must be to use this tool at scale on a large project with 100K lines of test and a dozen other contributors.
