If the M4 benchmarks are true, 1) I find that quite surprising; nowhere did Apple seem to suggest that they touched the CPU compared to the M3 at all), and… 2) hey, a 13% per-clock performance increase, the first significant one since M1!

@chucker@norden.social avatar

@pmdj Geekbench 6 single-core results, but normalized to the same clock, and then generational improvements

@pmdj base table:

@pmdj regarding memory bandwidth, a single M1 Pro core did use ~102 GiB/s in this test: https://www.anandtech.com/show/17024/apple-m1-max-performance-review/2 so an M4 core might be able to use more than that

@pmdj Geekbench 6 doesn’t seem to clearly distinguish integer and fp results any more, so I’m left guessing which workloads are fp-heavy. HDR, probably?

I see some US Target stores now lock… underwear?

“Yes um hi sorry this is embarrassing but I need, uh, deodorant”
(unlocks rack)
“Oh also, briefs”
(sighs, unlocks another cabinet)
“Uhhh errrr 😳 😓 also condoms”
(rolls eyes, unlocks that as well)

Oh and that’s before you go to the cashier. “Haha, you know, the essentials 🫠”

Like… we lock hard alcohol (anyone could in theory fetch beer, although cashiers may ask kids for ID), and tobacco. That’s it, I think?

Article: 3 million Germans, or 5%, have never used the Internet

Me: are we sure they’re counting e-mail, Facebook, ticket vending machines, and increasingly even Internet-connected household items? I’m guessing a lot of them only consider the Web “the Internet”.

Two randos: “ackshually, none of my household items are connected” congrats, but you’re replying to me over the Internet, so you have zero relevance to my question??

The awful Fetterman take is bringing me a step closer to trying vegetarianism.

Perhaps that was his secret plan all along. 🤷🏻‍♂️

So, DeSantis signed a bill banning lab-grown meat. Fetterman remarked:

“Pains me deeply to agree with Crash-and-Burn Ron, but I co-sign this.

As a member of @SenateAgDems and as some dude who would never serve that slop to my kids, I stand with our American ranchers and farmers. 🇺🇸”

Then he posted a picture of a machine that produces it, with “this is the thing that makes lab meat”.

Weirdly populist.

chucker,

@marczak And also (intentionally?) ignorant of how regular meat gets made today

The Delta Flyers now has Shopify ads randomly interspersed. Not even a clean ad break. Nor an ad read. Just some AI-sounding voice. Ugh.

Hope that’s worth it for the actors?

And the conversion rate must be brutal. Who listens to a podcast about Star Trek, suddenly hears some random voice talk about a web shop product very unexcitedly, and thinks, oh yeah, I’ve been meaning to give this a try.

So is there any non-WebKit iOS browser in the EU yet?

I only care because there’s a chance it’ll handle Azure DevOps’s auth better?

So in Swift, try! means “I’m confident the following will work; if it does not, crash”.

Similarly, in C#, someVar! means “I’m confident this isn’t going to be null; throw if I’m wrong”.

But in Dart, is! means “is not”.

The little inconsistencies between languages. 🫠
