When will Apple make a “hey dummy, you’re leaving your apartment and you have the AirPods case with you but the AirPods aren’t in the case” alarm? Asking for a friend.

I’m generally OK with how English has adapted loan words (pronouncing “fiancé” with an “ey” is… fine… alright… suuuuuure), but “segue”? There is no “WAY” in there. Where the fuck to you get the way from. Do you think a segue is like a highway? What the hell.

The Segway was a fun product name precisely because segue is not seg-way.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@MattF_NorCal the é diacritic would be a French thing. This is Italian, and… well, even if it were French, the “ey” thing is just something English made up.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@MattF_NorCal sure. There’s just something about it that makes me extra “just please use something else; that’s neither how the Italian word is pronounced nor its meaning”

String Catalogs in 15 look pretty nice (watched developer.apple.com/wwdc23/10155), but… how do I use “Vary by Plural” while not showing the count?

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

For example, suppose I have a label interspersed with a text field and a stepper.

What works very nicely here is that I can reduce to ‘1’, and the string catalog infrastructure will pick a different localization for that (specifically, singular).

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

Which is great for languages like Ukrainian where you don’t just vary by one/other, but one/few/many/other!

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

But in my case, I just want it to vary the word based on the count. I don’t want it to output the count, because as you can see, that’s redundant and looks awkward.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

Simply removing the format specifier results in “Localizable.xcstrings:1:1: Cannot infer format specifier for string group because no numerical specifiers were found (en: %lld ping)”.

So, is there a way to say “number would go here, but hide it”?

I’ve been saying for a while that instead of “all phones should use USB-C” and “users should pick a web browser when setting up their phones”, “the Apple-Google duopoly must provide APIs that allow third parties to thrive” is the real thing the EU should’ve focused on.

For example, third-party headphones can’t integrate as well as AirPods, no matter how hard the vendor tries.

Snell makes the case that this hurts Humane, too.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

I’m still unconvinced it would be a good product. But I think Snell is right: Apple makes it so that Humane cannot make a good product.

Is “wishcasting” the new “colorway”? As in, you’re adding a suffix that doesn’t add information vs. “wishing” and “color”?

As of Swift 5.10, error handling is still rough.

What’s the problem with this code? It’s neither the first argument to Button(), nor is it anything related to task.StandardOutput.

No, the actual error is that String(data: data) can’t be resolved.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@kaybutter I get that for the first error, but 1) I don’t quite understand where the second error comes from, and 2) why doesn’t it show the “initial” error on the String constructor?

Add to that, Xcode’s poor display of overloads on String() is what caused this in the first place.

Gotta say, SwiftUI is almost five years old. This kind of thing still feels immature and beginner-unfriendly.

People who primarily interact with Git using its command line like the past 50 years of evolution in personal computers never happened fascinate me.

I do use it, but only for specialized use cases Fork or an IDE can’t handle.

@uliwitness why waste time use lot CLI when few GUI do trick, as Kevin Malone might say 😃

How the hell could they cancel Lower Decks?! It was the freshest new Trek in decades. (Okay Strange New Worlds is also pretty fresh and great and they didn't cancel that YET but why can't we have both?!)

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@uliwitness @bigzaphod @cocoaphony probably Sony’s doing? I think shows where Apple is the studio don’t do that (yet?)

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@bigzaphod @cocoaphony I’m still bitter Disney

  • released Single Drunk Female season 2 US-only, with no announcements regarding international availability
  • then it eventually arrived in the UK
  • then it finally arrived in Germany (did they do a push notification to let me know? Of course not)
  • then a few days later, with no prior warning, they canceled the show and DELETED IT FROM THEIR SERVICE

so I couldn’t finish watching

🤬🤬
