Apple Vision Pro might go on your head, but it won’t replace your hat.

https://www.theverge.com/23757863/apple-vision-pro-replace-tv-never

albertkinng,

@gruber Can someone tell Alex that no one watch TV? Isolation? I dare you to find a family in front of their TVs without using their phones or tablets. Even me, an extremely old school conservative, can’t bring the whole family to watch a movie with me. My daughter is fine with a youtube review of the movie (and will say she watched it), my wife will be everywhere (even doing unnecessary chores) asking me about the movie from the distance and the only one watching is me.

They didn't talk about it much in sessions, but it seems like visionOS is going to be doing vector rendering on text and UI so that you can get up close with app windows and still see sharp detail. This is going to prove slightly problematic for apps with rendering that bakes text or symbols into images, as they'll only get bitmap scaling and blur when blown up. Very curious to see what issues that might highlight in my own apps

albertkinng,

@stroughtonsmith Playing devil's advocate, I believe it's time to bid farewell to bitmap UI/UX. With the speed and technology advancements we have, it's more advantageous to embrace vector-based elements extensively.

Interesting Vision Pro observation from “Enhance your iOS apps for the shared space” - when touching interfaces, the system will only register one touch event per hand. Not “multitouch.”

Does this mean that you will need to “hunt and peck” to get the virtual keyboard working well?

https://developer.apple.com/wwdc23/10094?time=413

albertkinng,

@brandonhorst Interesting… do you think that is a rule just for the spatial bubble but not for third party app interaction?

@quinticben @stux Great idea! I think I will be just with Mastodon and Vero from now on… Twitter, Apollo and Facebook are going to be out of my life soon. Sure I will loose a lot of followers but I really don’t care. Maybe one account of the “regulars” just for promotion and that’s it!

Once again, Microsoft gets forgotten while everybody is comparing Apple Vision Pro to Meta Quest. In reality, Hololens is the only product in the world even in the same ballpark of what Apple is doing. It also starts at $3,500. It also brings Microsoft's existing app and content ecosystem into augmented reality, and tries to make it work in a spatial environment with eye and hand tracking. MS bet on passthrough display tech, where Apple brute-forced AR with cameras and silicon prowess

albertkinng,

@Ezhik @stroughtonsmith What it means?

albertkinng,

@stroughtonsmith Be honest… would you trust Microsoft to merge all your data and apps inside their spatial computer glasses? I still have a mixed UI running on my Windows 11 machine and every two days it crashes when I disconnect from the servers. Then, back in my house I have one Mac Mini from 2011 running Panther (Server edition) that has never failed! NEVER. Windows looks beautiful now, but it’s just that. Internally need a lot of work.

What tools are used to make sexy animations like these? (This clip is from the "Design dynamic Live Activities" WWDC session.)

A flowing animation of user interface examples that bend and fly from 3D space into 2D space like it's fresh out of an Apple television commercial.

albertkinng,

@bigzaphod I can do that animation with Apple Motion App. He used something else, I’m just letting you know where you can do it too.

@gruber I read your article about your experience with Vision Pro, you’re the only one that shared an honest and transparent opinion / review compared to everyone else. Thank you! 💪

albertkinng,

@gruber Matthew Panzarino from TechCrunch was excessively biased, Krista Jones from Esquire seemed unfamiliar with the Vision Pro, and Grace Mayer from Insider sounded offended. Among all the reviews, only yours appeared to be impartial and willing to provide an honest assessment without worrying about making Apple uncomfortable or angry. This is precisely why I always read Daring Fireball.

I spent about 30 minutes using/touring Vision Pro yesterday. Ask me anything.

albertkinng,

@williamkey123 That's right. I've been using an iPad since it was first introduced and have upgraded it regularly. I have never used it to play games or watch movies; it's my primary work tool. I intend to keep buying iPads for the rest of my life as long as they continue to manufacture them.

albertkinng,

@gruber @skry @williamkey123 Interesting. It seems quite promising. Having a clean desk with a wireless keyboard, a trackpad, and just the Vision Pro in one corner would be a game changer. Perhaps, when they enable Mac airplay screens to be opened side by side, it would truly become a viable alternative.
