I had the privilege yesterday of handling various snakes, including a ground boa (shown below) and slug-eating snake. This was after #filming several spitting #cobra species from around Indonesia, which were being sunbathed (and were very unhappy about it).
I should have the footage up soon, but am still deciding if I should go back and get more before publishing.
@jaybaeta I grew up in an area with only one species venomous snake, and even where I live now there are only a few, easy to recognize species you'd have to go searching for to meet them. It's so much easier not to grow up afraid of snakes under those circumstances. In your situation the danger is much more real - respect!
@dandelion Precisely. 😅 My first experience with a snake was in southern Africa, when I was five years old, and lifting some paper bags in the garden. The sudden sight of a slender body scampering away gave me a fright that persisted in my nightmares for decades! 😂 I'm so fortunate now that I've met people who have helped me reduce my fear... in Indonesia, it's especially helpful.
Filmed the second of the three rivers we visited during the dry season, completing the fifth of six parts for this exploratory documentary on the #rivers of #Yogyakarta. Saw fish and insects, but no larger wildlife.
Earlier today, another #river. Smelled like old onions, and later on, I travelled past a literal waterfall of garbage. So, no, it was not the most fun of experiences. 😂
Good: I finished filming another part of our exploration of the life in #Yogyakarta's rivers.
Bad: one of the cards got corrupted, so I might lose some of the footage. Still working on recovery and we'll see how that goes (I have no idea what I'm doing :blobpeek:).
Success! Full credit to the mysteries of the universe, because I had to move my laptop and when I plugged the SD card in again, it worked again. I have no idea what changed but I'll take it.
Still can't watch Dune 2 because CGV is continuing to dedicate six screens to Exhuma, a Korean film starring Choi Min-sik, because Indonesians really love their horror. :blobcatcoffee:
Incidentally, if anyone is interested in publishing a paper that analyses a literary work, especially one from a marginalised voice, please consider Poetika.
They desperately need authors from outside Indonesia, which is always a struggle for small journals here. If you want a fee waiver, you can probably even name-drop me to get it. 😊
I always enjoying visiting UGM's Faculty of Cultural Sciences. The atmosphere is laid back, everyone is friendly, and it has lovely views of the rest of UGM.
Something I randomly learned today is that when the Dutch re-invaded Indonesia in 1948, the CIA's report mostly focused on the economic impact in the west and erosion of the UN's standing. Then ONI came in with their red pen and said to make it all about communism. And I do mean all about communism.
Just imagine the officer typing furiously about Indonesian extremists as a cigarette slowly burned on the tip of his lips.
ScholarOne's manuscript status texts are giving me nauseating anxiety. From Under Review to rejection in journal, and then Awaiting Reviewer Assignment back to With Editor in this one. 🥴
I realise this is just the cost of doing business, but the past month has been extremely profitable for the gremlins of my mental health.
If there's one nice thing about getting older, it's being able to go back to things you didn't like and finding your perspectives have changed.
I remember annoying Dave Timnick a decade ago when I responded poorly to his evaluation of (his band) Intronaut's latest album. Now, I don't love it, but some songs are thought-provoking in ways that make me realise I was too dismissive and shallow-minded back then.
