6 June 1643: Henry Spencer created Earl of Sunderland . He had acted as volunteer in the King's Guard at the Battle of Edgehill, and may have also made a large loan to Charles I. He didn't enjoy the title long as he d. at the Battle of Newbury 20 Sept 1643 (BM)
