She isn't going to want to fuck with an SBC or even a laptop. Just a ten foot interface with single remote control. That may end up being a smart TV. So, I think the answer might end up being:

"Fuck streaming services. Fuck 'em hard." :-(

A friend of mine has a dumb TV that she wishes to use to watch various "internet" based services like BritBox, YouTube, and Netflix. I suspect that an Android based "media player" box is the easiest way (without buying a television) for me to make that happen. She does not want to hook up a laptop to the TV and use it to play media.

Is there a better option than an Android box? And if not, what do I need to know about buying one of the many available boxes? One of my concerns is that at some point the lack of updates will force her to buy a new box. Is that a likely thing?

I've been using systemd as an email client for a while, but now I am officially using dillo as my init system, and systemd as my browser on my daily driver. Now I just have to figure out how to send a bitcoin payment to pay my rent.

Fuuuuuck. Can we just stop with the AI shit? Could we please have a huge hype of common sense instead?

I used to run the dnscrypt.ca DNS resolvers on ULayer VPSs right up until they stopped hosting in Canada. After some hunting around I eventually landed at inet.ws with a single resolver. Today I received this email from them and I think these are pretty cool features. This hosting company is working out quite well for me and I think anyone who is considering getting a VPS should give them a look.

So, is there a way for a Canadian to get Grit TV without having to pay some ridiculous cost for streaming "packages" and without having to use some shitty "app"? For something that is free to air it sure seems hard to get. :-(

Join us this Saturday evening at 8pm Eastern for an ETR/SBI presentation of TempleOS: Down The Rabbit Hole [2018]. It is more about the TempleOS creator Terry Davis than the operating system itself. https://offcorp.ca/watchparty.html

Thanks to @dosnostalgic 's earlier post I am hangin' out with Guan-di watching My Name Is Bruce [2007] this afternoon. And here is a screenshot of Bruce Campbell proving that payphones really did exist. :blobcatfingerguns:

Fuck it... since I am already using systemd as my init system, text editor, media player, and hypervisor, I may as well use it as my browser too. Right? :blobcat_flamethrower:

@swaggboi Dude, did you end up watching Programmed For Murder (the Nina Rieser thing)? I have it downloaded and (if you haven't watched it) I was thinking of putting on

I like to whine that the municipal government here is a joke at fixing road problems. Basically if there is a problem (like a bigass pothole) they put an orange cone on it. If people call to complain... they put out a bigger cone.

This afternoon I'm watching City Of Fear [1959] in which a guy THINKS he has a canister with heroin in it, but it actually contains cobalt-60. At the end, [spoiler alert] when he finally dies of radiation poisoning they just put a blanket on him and a little biohazard sign. Suddenly my municipality doesn't seem so clown-like. Boy, life in the 1950's was rough!

Don't get me wrong... Microsoft's ability to block legitimate mail, allow spam through, AND still be a giant source of spam for decades is fucking epic. But Oracle is trying their best to compete. Lookout Microsoft, there's a new jackass in town!

Speaking of bees... all the bees died over the winter because of moisture. :-( Well, I saw one bee but I do not know if it came from my hives... it would be pretty weird if they all died except one.

One of my items on archive.org just got reviewed. Someone named Langtons referred to me as "an absolute life saver" for uploading an old MacOS "El Capitan" install image for a 64 bit machine that has a 32 bit EFI. I am not mentioning this to brag (well, maybe a little) but rather to encourage folks to share their own weird and esoteric stuff with @internetarchive because

  1. those are exactly the kinds of things that need to be preserved and
  2. there is a good feeling that comes from finding out you helped a total stranger get an 18 year old piece of hardware working again

Thanks Internet Archive! :blobcatcheer:
