joel, to piracy in Is Windscribe a good VPN for torrenting?

I used wind scribe for a few years for torrenting on my phone andpc and never had any trouble. Once I forgot to turn on the vpn while downloading a movie on my phone at work (using the companywifi 🤦) and got an email from IT saying they’d gotten a warning and not to do it again 🤣😬

They do have a firewall option to prevent scenarios like that

My first impression was that they were Korean

I had a friend like that too, he was Sri Lankan and took offense that he was somehow not included in the blanket term of Asian. I’ve since learnt it’s possible to be more specific and say South Asian for countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc, and south-east Asian for countries like Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines etc

Maybe you should read the manual on how to reply to a Lemmy comment

Preach!

joel, to piracy in How many of you use Usenet VS torrents

I started using Usenet about a year ago and much prefer it. Once you have you it set up it’s very straight forward to use, and means you don’t have to worry about maintaining your ratio, or making sure your vpn doesn’t drop out, or piratebay going down etc etc

joel, to piracy in What drew you to the high seas?

When I discovered soulseek and could stop paying $20-$30 per CD. Incidentally, I bought an iPod round the same time and couldn’t copy my mp3s over, and that’s the last time i ever bought an apple product

joel, to showerthoughts in Using Ubuntu may give off hipster vibes to the average PC user, but within the Linux community its has the opposite effect.

Ironically I’ve tried installing Ubuntu a couple of times in the past, but for whatever reason it didn’t work. I’m currently using Debian instead just because the install worked. No idea why, maybe my laptop is just weird.

I used Arch for years because I wanted to learn more about how linux works and it was a good way to push myself. I think it worked because I am better at problem solving now - I even read the error messages lol

joel, to creepywikipedia in Portal - Australian avant-garde death metal band known for their complete anonymity, executioner costumes, and a chaotic sound that unsettles even fans of the genre

I saw cattle decap live a few months ago, they put on a fucking awesome show! Whoever did the audio for the gig did a hell of a job too

joel, to lemmyshitpost in Choose your difficulty

Umm I don’t think New Guinea is part of the Australian continent. I live in Australia and they definitely didn’t teach us that in school

joel, to lemmyshitpost in Choose your difficulty

For some reason New Guinea is included with Australia, even though the western half is owned by Indonesia, and the eastern half is its own country. Either way with the civil war going on there at the moment I’d much rather be living in Australia!

joel, to coolguides in A cool guide for Windows users

Yeah I didn’t know this one either. Every time I see one of these cheatsheets, I learn something new

joel, to linux in What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

Yeah I don’t see the problem here
