joel,

When I discovered soulseek and could stop paying $20-$30 per CD. Incidentally, I bought an iPod round the same time and couldn’t copy my mp3s over, and that’s the last time i ever bought an apple product

joel,

Ironically I’ve tried installing Ubuntu a couple of times in the past, but for whatever reason it didn’t work. I’m currently using Debian instead just because the install worked. No idea why, maybe my laptop is just weird.

I used Arch for years because I wanted to learn more about how linux works and it was a good way to push myself. I think it worked because I am better at problem solving now - I even read the error messages lol

joel,

For some reason New Guinea is included with Australia, even though the western half is owned by Indonesia, and the eastern half is its own country. Either way with the civil war going on there at the moment I’d much rather be living in Australia!

joel,

Umm I don’t think New Guinea is part of the Australian continent. I live in Australia and they definitely didn’t teach us that in school

joel,

it must depend on your location cos I can still use it

joel,

Yeah I didn’t know this one either. Every time I see one of these cheatsheets, I learn something new

joel,

I saw cattle decap live a few months ago, they put on a fucking awesome show! Whoever did the audio for the gig did a hell of a job too

joel,

The sunsets are pretty amazing though

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

joel,

I’ve been using nothing but Linux for 5 years and I still have problems every now and then.

joel,

My laptop is 6 years old and has been running arch Linux with xfce for most of that time. I got tired of maintaining it and changed to an “easy” Linux mint distro. It takes much longer to boot up now and feels generally sluggish in comparison to a minimal arch install. So from experience, in older hardware having a bloated distro can really slow down your system.

joel,

Without knowing the real reasons behind it, it’s very difficult to hold an opinion on the board’s decisions

joel,

I’m not gonna say I know much about his history, but I am surprised so many people are jumping to take his side in this debacle. I would’ve thought in this day and age that people would be a bit more sceptical of CEOs.

joel,

Or they could be from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka…

Reddit is blocking users based on user agents? (feddit.de)

Started to get this message when accessing Reddit. I use LibreWolf as a browser, which does indeed provide a more generic user agent to combat fingerprinting, but nothing out of the ordinary either (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/119.0). Anyone else experiencing this?...

joel,

Yeah I didn’t think disabling features for Firefox users would make sense. The user would have to know you’re punishing them for it to be effective at incentivising them to switch to chrome.

I personally don’t trust Google anyway and mainly just use duckduckgo.

joel,

It’s how people have been talking for, like, 20 years now at least

joel,

What’s with the “Ha ha ha ha” cartoon figure at the bottom

joel,

Next time I’m having a bad day at work I’ll remember this. At least the whole world can’t look up in the sky and see my fuck up!

joel,

I’ve been using the free version of protonmail for years, and I’ve thought about paying but it’s just so expensive! Even with the current deal it’s still €40 a year for the lowest tier, budget email subscription. The next step up is €104. Then after 12 months it goes back to full price.

Convincing myself to pay that for something I’ve never paid for before is a huge ladder to climb for me

joel,

I think so, I only really looked at the cheapest one

joel,

Australia

joel,

Try Usenet, you don’t need to worry about a VPN that way

joel,

I just wanna say I appreciate people here making intelligent, good faith arguments on both sides without resorting to black or white thinking or getting too aggressive/ abusive.
