On 20th June, I'll be in Glasgow for the workshop "Towards improving the accessibility of the mathematical sciences for visually impaired people", talking about my work on Chirun (https://chirun.org.uk/)

If any mathstonauts will be in Glasgow that day, it'll be nice to meet you!

@christianp There's probably enough of us who'd like to buy you a drink to give a small elephant alcohol poisoning

I'm a city kid and I've never seen any astronomy before... but the northern lights were so bright we could see them in central Glasgow

Please can somebody inform MS Word that the accusative form of "who" is "who" in modern English, it's not 1924 anymore and I'm not writing in German

julesh,
@julesh@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@jer_gib @julesh I'm sticking with this one. If you listen to how people speak, including people of your generation and older and even in Oxford, you basically never hear “whom" in accusative position. Imagine somebody actually saying “I don't know whom you're talking about” out loud, it sounds incredibly jarring to me. I reckon the only version anybody at all actually uses consistently is following a preposition "to”, as though English had a dative case... and it's not 1024 any more

Someone should write "mathematics for the working category theorist", to teach a bit of algebraic topology to those of us who started out in functional programming

A weird oversight: the email I get from Google Groups telling me that someone wants to join the group is in their preferred language, not mine.

julesh,
@julesh@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp Oh yeah, that bug's been around forever. Google Meet has the same bug too, calendar invites are in the sender's language

I wish I could make my students understand: write in their own voice and they'll write like an intelligent scientist who is not a native speaker, cheat with GPT and they'll sound like a native speaker who's a fucking idiot, like a politician or something

Applied category theory is totally incoherent as a field, it has no right to be as successful as it is

I've been marking like crazy from the wrong pile 😭 I mistakenly thought the emails about the urgent deadline for 5th year projects were talking about 4th year projects

julesh,
@julesh@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp Yeah, and these are just research proposals and they're marked pass/fail so they're quick to mark

Today visiting @JadeMasterMath I got completed soaked in the rain and then we found out that the main theorem of our paper is false, but on the plus side I got to paint my nails and wear a skirt, so all in all a pretty mixed bag

I vaguely feel that the AGI singularity cult comes from a mode of thinking that's implicitly aligned with Catholic Neo-Platonism. Like, if everything in the universe is either sentient or it isn't and there's no grey area between then you end up in an absolutist position on abortion. So every AI is either AGI or it isn't, and every AGI is God-like.

It's kind of the exact opposite of your basic starting point of queer theory, that binaries don't exist in nature.

Extremely curious how so many people who support abolishing daylight saving time turn out to live thousands of km closer to the equator than me

julesh,

The most common proposal I hear is to abolish winter time and use summer time all year, which would mean the sun comes up around 10am here in midwinter, absolutely incredible idea

I always thought that storm drains in the street mainly went down to the same sewer as your toilet. Turns out that's called a "combined sewer" and they exist, but most built since around the 30s have 2 completely separate sewer systems in parallel, with the one for "urban runoff" mainly just going into rivers. The more you know.

I have removed the rss feed of my mastodon account from the sidebar of julesh.com. It was super buggy and looked ugly as hell anyway. For the first time in like 7 years I no longer have a social media account mirrored on my professional homepage. I'm finally free
