I think we're focused on the wrong thing when we look at what tech works for a company like Amazon or Facebook or Netflix.

We should be looking at what tech works when you don't have a small army of staff engineers optimizing it. I want to know what I can scale without paying someone a half million dollar salary to do it.

There should be more case studies on things that don't have a billion-dollar company propping them up, humming along quietly on a cheap-ass VPS somewhere.

@collinsworth hadoop and kubernetes have certainly been great technology for staff engineers. so many years of job security.

    How Does Paris Stay Paris? By Pouring Billions Into Public Housing

    One quarter of residents in the French capital live in government-owned housing, part of an aggressive plan to keep lower-income Parisians — and their businesses — in the city.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/17/realestate/paris-france-housing-costs.html?unlocked_article_code=1.d00.Zygo.7GiMG1xtQB_q&smid=url-share

    @davidho NYC also has a pretty big public housing sector. I wonder how it compares, i.e. how many units, how many people, how long are the waiting lists.

    laurentoget,

    @Whathefrench @davidho https://www.apur.org/sites/default/files/4p235_chiffres_log_social_paris_2022_01.jpg

    there are close to 270 000 public housing (logement social) inside paris city limits.

    by law the city is required to have 25% of rental units be public housing and had been delinquent until apparently this year

    I hate Chromebooks. My kid has to use a school-issued one, and it sucks. If they are going to issue laptops to kids, they need to be ruggedized, and run fully open source software that can be wiped and reflashed easily. Files should be stored on servers (run by the public school system, not fucking Google), so the kids can log into any laptop and access their files. They need to be able to charge with standard barrel connectors, not delicate USB-C ports.

    laurentoget,
    @laurentoget@mathstodon.xyz avatar

    @thezerobit Sadly it has become close to impossible for à small organization to manage their own email infrastructure. Keeping your infrastructure up to date so Google will not reject your mail as spam takes several full time experts so if you want to be able to send emails to Gmail address you practically need a third party provider and Google is the easiest

    L’avortement, « première cause » de « mortalité » dans le monde, selon Cnews et son émission de cathos-fachos « En quête d’esprit ». Charlotte d’Ornellas et ses sbires n’évoquent pas les femmes mortes faute de soins ou d’accès à l’IVG mais des embryons. C’est de la désinformation, désormais habituelle sur Cnews. Je ne diffuserais pas la séquence mais la chanson « Non, tu n’as pas de nom » d’Anne Sylvestre à la place https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-FYynGrjtgY&source_ve_path=MTc4NDI0

    So, I'm kinda sorta officially a model.

    My friend and frequent work-partner, Baz, is an artistic photographer. They won a Canada Council grant to do these really cool 3D portraits of a bunch of local trans and nonbinary models. You can't see the 3D effect without the glasses, but it's very cool.

    This exhibit will be at the Central Branch of the Kitchener Public Library until the end of March.

    I'm a freakin' model. Tick that box off my bucket list.
